The difference in third world nations is the students can not afford the books. So the instructor reads the book and teaches it to the class. Of course if they want to work in their field they have to pass all the same tests everyone else does. It use to be we could test out on any course we wanted to by just taking a test based on the book. I actually did that with High School. I got fed up with their nonsense. So I took my GED and just tested out so I could just sign up for the classes I wanted to take at the university.
If find it hard to respond to your post, it seems to be of little relevance. Did you stop writing about university level studies?

Edit: Whooops, forgot "you".

And if you believe the right thing while you're alive here on earth then you get to have eternal life but if you don't then you will suffer torture?
That is NOT what I believe. Just about every post on here you people presume to think you know what I believe and you do not know. Also science has shown a lot of beliefs about the Bible to be wrong. So the question is what does the Bible really say and what can Science do to help us to understand the lesson the Bible has for us today.

I am not here to feed people. I am here to help people learn how to feed themselves. That maybe a difficult concept for you spoon fed college grads to understand. Because your all so rich so you can all afford to hire people to spoon feed you all day long. But that is ok, you can go back to having your food fight, because that is all you seem to know anyways.

Most people function at a fifth grade level. At best they function at an eighth grade level. So it does not matter if you have a university education or not, you still have to communicate with people where they are at. That is why creationists are doing so much better then evolutionists at reaching people with their beliefs. They teach people on the level they are at.

Your words admit more than you would probably like.

Science is not about spreading beliefs. Never has been. Once again, you are projecting your religious views where they do not belong:

Psychological projection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I think it is much better to challenge people, to expect them to increase their knowledge. Whatever happened to learning something in this country? What next? Hiring people to chew your food for you?

Guess what? Education is HARD. You actually have to put some effort in. Students may actually have to use that noodle between their ears and apply the concepts they are taught. EGADS!!!!!

Then do not be surprised if evolution scores very low in the gallup polls. Do not be surprised if evolution is very unpopular with the muslims. Although what does surprise me is how much influence the very few anti evolution muslims have over the overall muslim population. But your attitude about how science is not here to spread their beliefs does seem to help to explain that.

I think you missed the point.

You can't encourage people to think for themselves, then attempt to dictate what they think. I was in an English class in high school where the teacher wanted us all to read the same book ("David Copperfield" if I recall). How dumb is that. :D

I totally can relate! I was in another class back when I lived in Mexico where they made us all read one book too! It was called catechism, I believe. Pretty dumb, indeed! :D

No one is. We are teaching kids what scientists have discovered, and teaching them how it applies to biology.

Since when is reading the same book dictating what they think? You have some very strange ideas of how education works. You seem to be confusing education with religious indoctrination.

That is rather insulting. I already explained to you how not all college grads are rich by the fact that I was born in Mexico and was relatively poor there compared to most people in the U.S.

The fact is most college students end up with a lot of debt. If we were all rich and spoon-fed there would be no student loans... I don't see how someone can be so misinformed.

There are are times when I wonder if I could really be on the right side of reason and logic and so many more people be on the wrong side; it's little comments like Jamin's that dispel all those doubts.

Sorry, what I meant was that formal education teaches us what to think about.

Consider childen entering kindergarten. Their greatest curiousity, fascination, fear, and need for guidance is their place in the society of kids around them, not the curriculum. Their collective and individual needs are ignored and the law of the jungle obtains. Widespread bullying and it's often terrible consequences is one manifestation of this.

The first duty of the educational system is to protect the kids while in their care. Education should only proceed when all dangers, and distractions, have been controlled or eliminated.

Another failure of the system is the sense of shame and failure that teachers lay on students who either won't or can't live up to their unrealistic must-go-to-college expectations. They should be made to wear masks so kids that have no intention of going on won't have to be confronted with their looks of disappointment and disapproval.

The curriculum has little to do with the failure of the system. It's the ivory tower, liberal elite attitudes that pervade the system. Much of this problem stems from the young, inexperienced teachers that enter the field. They are often laden with debt, unsettled lifestyles, and way too liberal attitudes to be entrusted with our kids. There are also way too many women teachers. Kids need strong father figures who can guide their education with a firmer hand. In fact the whole system needs to be masculinized. :D

This MYOB mentality confuses me. What is the government's business?

Do you just want to teach your kids whatever you want (which you are already free to do outside school...), or do you also want to punish your own criminals (and who determines who the criminals are?), fight your own fires, build your own roads...? Where and how do you draw the line between enough and too much state interference?

I'm always exasperated by the way libertarians seem to assume that their ideas of the limits of government are self evidently correct. Opinions differ. I didn't come here to argue politics, so just let's leave it that you and I do not agree on this topic, nor are likely to.

The thread is called "Should Schools be Required to Teach Evolution?"

Required by who? I assumed this is a political discussion.

You're right in that opinions do differ, which is why limited government is preferable; one size won't fit all without robbing some individuals of their liberty, which is an undesirable outcome unless you are a statist and don't care for them.

In which case, in the spirit of the golden rule: please consider suicide before you go around persecuting everyone else.

What a pleasant individual and advertisement for the gospel you are.
