The Bible clearly depicts the Earth as a flat, round disk covered by a crystal dome or "firmament."

It's funny that for hundreds of years the church vehemently defended the flat-earth theory by using these verses. But here comes Galileo and oh boy, they tried to silence him but eventually his findings got out...

When the church realized they couldn't hide the facts anymore they just changed their dogma. Now modern Christians and Jews will tell you that the Bible supported a spherical earth the whole time!

Sneaky sneaky Christians...

The Flat-Earth Bible.

What the church finally realized was the wonderful poetry of the bible, though many still cling to literal meanings.

Thanks for the great references, very interesting.

My point is that, regardless of bible interpretations, to the eye the earth generally appears flat with a dome over it containing the sun and clouds and beautiful color by day, the moon and stars by night.

Did the ancients use this same visual reference to interpret those scriptures that seem to support what they clearly saw.

Whenever I view the earth and sky, day or night, with the above in mind, it blows me away (don't get me wrong, I know the earth isn't flat). :D

This was a very common view of the universe not just for the ancient Hebrews but for pretty much everyone around at the time. The Old Testament is heavily influenced by Mesopotamian myths, including this view of the world (and other stuff like the flood).

One of the things that made me drift early in my apostasy was the realization that the Bible was very much a product of its time, and didn't transcend the ideas about reality of the time.

But I digress.

Does the Bible actually say the Earth is flat. I am unclear on that point.
The Bible is ALWAYS accurate and true. So there is no way the Bible says the earth is flat. Actually the flat earth society had a myth were they were trying to discredit the Bible and promote atheism. The person trying to do that died an early death.

Those foolish Hebrews. They could have won more battles if they had only
'transcended' the spears and swords of their time and grabbed an M-60. :p

So anything the Bible says that isn't accurate and true isn't actually in the Bible, right?

I'm sorry to hear of his untimely death.

Are you?

The Bible was apparently inspired by God, but contains no instructions for vaccine production or how to purify water. Actually, barely helps people improve their situation at all except for teaching them to properly worship their deity ;)

Well, it does show the way toward eternal life, which imo trumps vaccines and pure water.

How do you really know, though? The afterlife is unknowable.

I'd be far more impressed with the Bible if it had something to strengthen its validity in the world we currently live in. An outline of the germ theory of disease + the instructions on how to make a smallpox vaccine would have been great. Or some sort of prediction/prophecy that could actually be verified externally (and no, New Testament authors with a copy of the Old Testament on hand as they pen their scriptures does not count; I'm thinking more like "this won't make sense until you invent TV, but Arrested Development will be the funniest show you guys ever make.")

This is getting too General Apologetics-y, so we better end this discussion soon.

Many of the OT laws were intended to improve the quality of physical and material life, and would today if followed. For example the commandment not to 'murder' would prevent murders, if obeyed. This would certainly improve our 'situation'. :p (Oops, I meant :preach:)

There are laws against murder in this country, buddy.
