• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

hi Kelly, I appreciate you writing again here. I agree that blood sugar testing does provide a good incentive for being honest about your diet. I must admit that I haven't tested for a while now, but have been meaning to test again for a period of time to check where I am again with my sugar levels. To be honest I was putting it off because I've been a bit worried about it again.

Just lately I've been having some yummy salads - today for lunch it was prawn cocktail with salad, and for dinner it was tinned salmon with chopped hardboiled eggs & black pepper (which went really well) and salad. I'm not sure though if I need to be even stricter though - for example with certain veggies like tomatoes which I know some people avoid, or cutting out salad dressings.

Thanks for your encouraging advice about exercise. I guess it could help with motivation to measure sugar levels after exercise to see how much it reduces.

Variation is key in keeping satisfied with low carb eating. When I get in a rut of the same thing for lunch each day, I can be more tempted to go to my work cafeteria...where I don't know carb counts - and they want to put rice or pasta in everything!

You probably know, but avoid low fat salad dressings. In processed foods, consider Fat, Protein and Carbs points on a triangle. If you lower the fat, you are probably increasing the sugar.

I make an easy lunch dish using diced chicken (I buy frozen, precooked/prediced) and heat it, add a can of mushrooms, cover with shredded cheese and cooked bacon. Serve with a bit of ranch dressing. It's a good hot lunch.

Check you blood sugar before a meal and 1.5 hours afterward. If your post meal is over 150 mg/dl, you should exercise for 30 minutes if you can. You should knock it down 10-30pts (it depends on your condition). A brisk walk or exercise bike run will do it,

There are lots of flavored almonds out there that make a great snack. Even cocoa and cinnamon dusted ones that are only 6 carbs per serving (1/4 cup of nuts).

I would not worry about the carb count of veggies with the exception of carrots and, of course, corn and potatoes which I don't cinsider veggies - they're starches.

This is a very good topic and the responses are excellent and appreciated:) I and my wife are both diabetics type 2. We have attended numerous seminars sponsered by the local hospials and have given us a lot of insight in what and not to do's As for eating at home we do pretty well as we watch carfully what we eat and watch the carbs. My wifes biggest problem she loves fruit.....and could eat a ton of it.......all in all our health is good, thanks to the Lord:amen:

I got the book '30 days to a diabetic cure' - my A1C was 10 - it's been 2 months and I have brought it down to 8.1 and counting. They gave some good tips in it - with fruit if you eat nuts with the fruit, the sugar does not go into the cells. It helped me.
Another tip is for potatoes - if you eat the potatoes cold with a little olive oil the starch does not go into the cells, when you eat them hot, they access the cells faster. I first went yuk - but tried it - its not so bad.

My hubby has lots of troubles with Chinese food, too. It must be the sauces, but you'd think that the deep fried fats would slow down the release of sugars.

Chinese or Asian food spikes my sugar big time - I think it must be MSG in the food.

One thing I would like to point out is the fact that people make us feel so guilty because of the diabetes. If you do not have it someplace in your genes you will not get it. You see fat people that does not have it and you see skinny people that do. I am overweight and when I came home and told my husband I have diabetes his first words was - well it's payback time now what are you going to do. That hurt has never left me. It is heavy in my family, brother died from it, both grandmothers had it and I would have gotten it no matter what size I was. All this talk on TV about overweight really lays the guilt on. It is good to watch our weight, but I wish people would quit laying the guilt on because of it.

I found that being strict and going without any kind of sugar will break the sweet habit in 10 days. I was addicted (and it is an addiction) to sweets. I could eat sweets instead of a meal - but I gor the book '30 days to diabetic cure' and it really has some good tips in it - and it was right on - 10 days and I don't want sweets.

Eat nuts with fruit - it blocks the sugar from the cells.
Eat potatoes cold with a little olive oil over them - blocks the starch from cells.
Eat whole grain bread - not whole wheat - whole grain.
Cereals - Kix and Cherrios are not too bad
Eat something every 2 hours.
If your blood sugar is 150 before meals - walk it off for about 20 min. - it will bring it down about 30 points.

I found that checking before each meal - I would spike between breakfast and lunch - no matter what I ate - that was just the way my body works - so I started drinking a drink called EAS with some frozen fruit for that meal - it worked and kept my sugar on an even level.

Thanks for all your good tips.

Through low car eating, 1 hour of exercise (split usually between two 1/2 hour sessions - for cardio I try to get to the upper end of the recommended heart rate) and 1000 mg metformin x2 / day I have reduced my a1c from 10 to 6 in about 6 months.

I have also lost about 10-12 lbs.

My cravings aren't usually sweets, for met it's chips/snacks. Having nuts (I found hot curry-spiced peanuts at a local indian grocer that I love), sausage sticks etc around help.

Flax muffins!

Cranberry Flax Muffins Recipe - Allrecipes.com

I omitted the cranberry from these and made 12 muffins. I did the math and they are 2 net carbs each after subtracting fiber and the sugar alcohols.

I have not done a study where I eat one and then check my blood sugar but I never seem to be abnormally high after I have one. You should limit your flax intake to about one a day, due to the high fiber content.

Diabetes can be reversed. My hubby was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes late last August 2011 and his A1C was 11.9 at the time of his diagnosis. In 3 weeks, my hubby was taken off Metformin (the Dr. said he would NEVER take him off Metformin and that they were trying the Metformin before putting him on insulin). Hubby's Dr. wanted to see my hubby in December 2011 and his A1C was down from 11.9 to 5.9. Today, less than a year later, his A1C is 5.6... All from diet and exercise. We followed the Death to Diabetes meal model and it really does work. Even Type 1 Diabetics have been able to reduce and some have even been able to come off insulin completely by diet and exercise. Just wanted to share. Diabetes is not just about "sugar" in the blood. It's about inflammation in the cells. Controlling and reversing diabetes is about eliminating inflammation by giving your body what it needs and getting rid of dead, processed food.
I would encourage ya'll to google and youtube Dewayne McCulley and just see what he has to say.

Hi All,

Just wondering about how you're doing with a diabetic diet, or are you. I've found that I do well with it when I'm not home, but when I'm home I really struggle to manage it and eat as I should.

Anyone else doing well or struggling? What works for you when you're at home?

According to a diabetic website i was on.. Sorry for interrupting ur thread however i have a question?? Diabetics eat fruit right? I am a little over 200
According to what i read i was a diabetic?? So far so good. I love salads
lean meats, lots of high fiber veg.s, minimal starchy foods:potato section.
Limit the sweets/desserts/candy bars/.. And lots of jumba and walking/..

You have to watch your fruits. Some are pretty high on the GI like dates and bananas and watermelon.

Fruit juices are all but out (unless you want to highly dilute them with water)

GI is the Glycemic Index. It's a list that shows how fast a food is converted to glucose. Apples are fine, but you have to limit yourself to like 3/4 of one for a snack. They do have a high amount of natural sugars.
