• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

diabetes consider a serious disease so never forget any disease aspects and side effect and be conscious about health.

I have T2 diabetes, due to the fact I was over weight. In a years time I have lost approx 80 pounds, I exercise 5 to 6 times per week doing aerobatics and using the trend mill. The last blood work I had everything was in range and I was considered non diabetic. You have to watch your carbs for sure and monitor your blood sugar to control your diabetics

The South Beach Diet is a terrific way of eating for type 2 diabetics. Look for books and recipe books from your library or there is lots of free information here:

Free Diet Plans at SparkPeople Sign up and look for the "South Beach Diet" team and several teams for diabetics.

Fresh fruit is high in sugar and most vegies are carbohydrates, ie; converts to sugar in the body? Just what a person with T2 doesn't want.

Only starchy vegetables (ie. potatoes) are high in carbohydrates. A low carb diet includes many non-starchy vegetables.

I';m T1, and yes, I did get it. As a T1, the insulin that is available is amazing. I can go eat anything I like, have sugar in my coffee if I want, and simply need to adjust my humalog, as my lantus, which lasts me 24 hours without any noticeable peak, allows me to experiment with a variety of food. Chinese food makes me take 3x my usual dose, as does any Japanese soup. Weird, I know.

Chinese food makes me take 3x my usual dose...

My hubby has lots of troubles with Chinese food, too. It must be the sauces, but you'd think that the deep fried fats would slow down the release of sugars.

The specialist I see said they add sugar to everything, even the soups.

I'm type 2 and I thought it would be enough just to cut down a bit on carbs, but lately I found that my sugar levels were still too high so now I've started low-carbing. I've given up almost all bread, old potatoes, cakes, sugar, pizzas and only have a few spoonfuls of rice if I have it at all. Its brought my HbA1c down from around 9 to 7, but I still need to and want to reduce it - I have a lot of weight to lose so it seems that exercise is the only way to go which I must admit I'm having trouble accepting. I'm still working my way through the Death to Diabetes book, but it seems to me that although some people can reverse their diabetes a lot through diet and exercise, it might depend on how much damage there is to your pancreas.

I eat yoghurt & small portion of berries for breakfast, or a two egg omelette, perhaps with cheese or vegetables. For lunch and dinner I mostly have meat, cheese, pulses or fish plus salad or vegetables. I take two 500mg Metformin twice a day.

I admit that sometimes I just want to have a sandwich or cake or fruit, but I've seen how high it pushes my blood sugars.

Good work, Koshka. It's not going to happen overnight. My blood sugar took a while to come down from when I didn't take care of myself to what I am getting today. You will be shocked how effective certain types of exercise are on blood sugar, as well.

Mild cardio, like 30 minutes on an exercise bike or going for a brisk walk, will really help drop your sugar down. Find your target heart rate for your age and health level (many websites have calculators for this). Consider buying a cheap heart rate monitor watch. Try to keep yourself in your target zone for most of the workout. You will find that your body rebounds very quickly and the intensity of your workout needs to increase after just a few days of regular exercise.

Your liver still has a reserve of glycogen which it turns into glucose whenever you go low, too. This is one reason you may go to bed with a low number and wake up with a higher one.

If you are avoiding carbs (pasta, rice, bread, even fruit) and working out and taking meds, and your sugar is still not dropping very much, you MAY have to go on insulin, even if only for a short time. I have not had to do that yet but it is an option.

I sometimes get depressed due to missing my old favorite foods, and you will occasionally cheat. I find frequent blood testing keeps me 'honest'. I can lie to myself, my family, but my blood results never lie. As your blood sugar gets more under control, you should find that your body can better handle the occasional carb meal a little better than it used to, so the occasional treat is not out of the question. Each person's body chemistry is different.

I look at it like this: I spent 30 years of my life eating and living exactly how I wanted, now I am paying a price for that. It won't fix itself overnight, but I know that I'm healthier now than I have been in 20 years. I have a lot to go, I want to lose 90 lbs. But I'm happy with my progress.
