I'm a big Spider-Man fan, and I love seeing him in film. So my protest has nothing to do with the following:

Cast
Director
Plot
Villain
an all too soon reboot feel
return to web shooters
etc

What I am opposed to is Sony releasing the film merely for licensing rights.

Marvel Comics first leased their characters to different studios. Characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Punisher, etc.

With different studios owning rights, the possibility of inclusion into the same universe is impossible.

Finally, MARVEL got smart and created their own movie studio, producing Thor, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, and Captain America. As you'll see this summer, this allows for films like the Avengers to be possible.

People often ask, "is it too soon for a Spider-Man reboot." Technically yes. Tobey McGuire and Sam Raimi are still fresh in the minds of the general audience. So why is Sony doing this? For the money, duh! LOL, true, but that's not all.

While they own the rights to Spider-Man, if they don't use it, they lose it. If Sony loses the rights to Spider-Man, the rights go back to Marvel who then are free to not only make future Spidey films, but if they want, incorporate him with their other titles.

In other words, they'll keep pumping out Spidey films to retain the license for as long as possible, just to spite it returning to their competitor (Marvel, which is now owned by Disney) so long as they can make a profit off it.

Hence why I will not be purchasing a ticket, nor buying it on DVD 4 months later. I don't want to support a system that's going to prevent Spidey from returning to his own Marvel Universe.

As a Spidey fan, am I suggesting not seeing it? No. I am merely suggesting to wait. You'll be able to see it free off of Netflix by the Holiday season, or this time next year on TBS or FX. So fans STILL CAN WATCH IT. But if it becomes unprofitable, maybe that will encourage them to release the rights sooner than later.

While I see your point, and agree that the reboot is way too soon, at least Sony is making it a quality film with good actors, effects, and strong promotion. To simply keep their licensing rights, they could have easily pumped out a lower budget film that wasn't that good. It would have still been successful b/c of the brand and they could have ridden that for at least a couple of films.

You can see what I mean by watching this Fantastic Four trailer from a 1994 film made solely to retain rights. Ultimately, it was never released.

To be fair, marvel had their shot. They could have got it back. But they didn't. Maybe it's because at the time they didn't think they could cover the high costs that Sony could, maybe it's because this was pre-marvel/disney alliance and their studio had little money. It's not like Sony is the big evil corporation here...they're the big evil corporation for releasing the bad, less bad but still not good, then awful first 3 films.

The first three Spider-man movies sucked. I don't imagine this one being much better. The special effects always look good, but when they go all Hollywood on the screenplays, it really takes away from the essence of who the character is. That being said, if someone buys a ticket for me, I'll check it out. Otherwise, I'll just wait until it comes out on HBO or something.

I'm tired of origin story comic book movies. It's a cop out that gives the screenplay writers (and special effects guys) a big break for sometimes half the movie.

It makes 'reboots' all that more tedious, too. We KNOW Peter was bitten by a spider, exhibited supernatural abilities and became a vigilante. Can we move on?

Second gripe, heroes taking off their masks. I know they hinder expression, but it seems to work for comic books. Also, changing from colorful uniforms to black leather - X-Men flicks, I'm looking at you.

I thought the first Spider-man movie excellent, the second OK, the third fairly lame.

I saw an extended preview of the new one, and based on that I will pass.

Unless my son wants to go see it. ;)

I'm a huge Spidey fan too. I'd love to see the rights revert back to Marvel, but as a fan, I'm still going to see this movie. I think the casting of Andrew Garfield was spot on, I like Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey, and web shooters are ICONIC. Everyone griped about the organic web shooters in the Raimi movies.

To be absolutely fair, could you imagine someone wearing one of Logan's costumes in real life?

ETA: I was going to add a picture, but my post count isn't high enough yet.

It is pretty dumb that Marvel would sell out their licensing rights to other companies.

I saw the Amazing Spider-Man and I was disappointed by it. I really think Marvel could've improved its flaws. Something that takes the strengths from both the new one and Tobey Trilogy would be great.

Well from what I understand, that was before Marvel made their own movies. Just like how DC Comics didn't make the Batman movies. They're technically distributed by Warner Bros, a movie company, which owns DC.

Plus, having Disney financially back Marvel I'm sure helped with them making their own movies (even though Iron Man 1 and maybe Hulk was made pre-Disney, their support helped make the Avengers happen).

I was wrong. I went to see this movie with my wife and thought it brilliant. As a life long Marvel comic reader, this movie was what should have been done with Spider-Man from the beginning. It was simply brilliant.
