I can't tell yet exactly the feeling on a personal devotion to theotokos within the OC. As a catholic, I have a strong personal devotion and is probably the reason I've been catholic for so long. Maybe it's excessive and maybe I'm feeling it today because of the issues I'm having at home (re my other post about "prayers for my daughter.)

But let me tell you what may have happened this morning and then follow it with a question: was reading a story online about a Catholic guy who has a strong devotion to the BVM, who decided to start praying the rosary for the country. Not a bad idea. he was talking about his lifelong devotion to the Blessed Mother and about fleeing to her in times of stress.

While reading that and because of my sinful ways and because I am sort of "homeless" in terms of a Church, i felt sad and sort of missed Her and that devotion.

At that second words popped into my head: "Are you ready to come out of the desert?"

That was all. It may have just been something that popped into my head, God knows I've been thinking that for a long time. Could it have been someone else? Maybe.

so my question is, what does the Orthodox Church think of this personal devotion to Mary. Is it possible that she might ask one of her children to get off the stick and straighten up?

Again, I have no idea where it came from, it just came.

I wasn't really talking about the rosary specifically, but more this personal "maternal" kind of thing that goes on in the RC. I understand that the Orthodox Church gives her immense honor and devotion, but i can't tell whether orthodox are encouraged to "take it to your Mother," and whether they foster that sort of personal devotion to her.

Yes, we are very fond of the Theotokos. The most common personal devotion, of course, is the Jesus Prayer. But look up the Akathist, a paraliturgical text, it could be prayed any or every day.

Yes, as gzt, we are very fond of the Theotokos, and some Orthodox are very close to her and actually have quite a beautiful relationship with her. Anyhow, after God, she is our refuge and Protectress.

If you look at the Divine Liturgy and how many times the Glorious Theotokos, Ever-Virgin Mary is invoked, how many times the faithful cross themselves at the mention of her name with a bow, and how many icons include her holy image, as well as how many prayers in a common Orthodox prayerbook ask her intercession, I can safely say that the Orthodox might just be a bit more "into" Marian devotion than Catholics even.

I'm with ya on the rosary. One of the things I've always loved about Catholicism is the rosary. It's awesome.

Whether you become Orthodox, or decide Catholicism is your faith and home, Mary is there for you.

Orthodox usually pray the Salutations (Akathist) to the Theotolos every evening with small compline. There are also the supplicatory canons that are sung in church during the Dormition fast in August, but can be read at any time during personal devotions.

absolutely. she loves us. I would go with the advice of praying an Akathist to her.
