Yesterday, driving back from the grocery store, I saw a car ahead of me that had a message on its back window that read "Get a Job that Lets you Have Fun" or words to that effect. My first thought that came to my mind was "I don't want to have fun....I want to be holy." Am I some kind of religious nut?

not necessarily. unless you equate fun with unholiness. i'd like a job where i can have fun (or at least enjoy) and still be holy.

"having fun" - that term makes me think of people drunk/wasted, acting the fool, debauchery. But I know there are different types of fun, such as playing sports, playing with your children, going to the movies, going to an amusement park etc. I don't know. That sign just sounded kinda strange. Enjoying your job is very important. Having fun at it? I don't know, unless you work in the circus or something. :sorry:

This is good. My son has been struggling with his grades lately, which used to make me very upset. But his favorite thing on earth is serving in the altar at church and going to the services. So it occurred to me that one does not have to get good grades to become a saint.

I would not have had that thought 5 years ago. It surprised me and made me happy.

True! My son was struggling the last quarter (especially since he missed many days because of our trip to LA for dad and all), but he did fine with the little studying we got done. :)

I am just guessing that maybe the sticker meant that you should find a job you enjoy.

I tell my kids in my class that they need to work hard NOW in school, so they don't have to struggle and be miserable later. Bottom line that I tell them is that they should find a job in which they feel like they're getting paid to have fun. If you're happiest when you're around math, then teaching math is like your hobby anyway. If you love law and legality, being a lawyer makes great money and you'd be reading it anyway. If you love religious matters and theology and worship is your life, being a priest is like being paid to do something you find utterly joyful.

For me, I love academics like history, literature, math, geography, languages, etc. so when I go to work each day, I feel like I'm having some fun. Throw in angry and deadbeat, lazy parents plus a broken "no-child left behind" system, and I'm feeling less fun of it by the minute! ^_^

^_^ You always make me laugh, Scott. :) Yes, what you said makes lots of sense. I agree that we should find a job we enjoy and it's more like a hobby. I don't know how many people really get to do that, but I'm sure there are many out there.

Well, what is so funny is that most of the "perks" that people told me about going into education turned out to be bull:

'you get to be your own boss' YEAH, RIGHT! :p
'it'll be fun grading papers!' ru kidding me? ^_^
'working with parents, you'll make a difference' someone was on crack when they told me that one evidently! :p
'you get to go home at 3pm' gotta be joking!
'people respect teachers' in the U.S.A? Not a bit. Teachers are the scapegoats for just about everything. We're all supposedly liberal commies, union hacks, we sip folgers crystals while we read the paper all day with our feet up on the desk as the kids languish in idiocy and ignorance, we want something for nothing, and get too much vacation in between those months we spend warping young minds into hippie mutants! LOL

I work with some real dillies for sure. Our grade level is so dysfunctional. My next door neighbor at school, she is awesome. We plan, grade, do everything together at sixth grade. The other guy is 100% certifiably nuts. I think he's bipolar. His brother was the last man executed by the State of California for armed robbery and serial murder sprees. His whole family has a history of insanity and violence and crime. He has threatened me, gossipped about me, and the guy is just plain creepy. I was actually in his class as a kid and he treated me like garbage. He's been a real pill. He thinks I'm always out to get him. No matter what the two of us plan together, he'll lie about it or just not do it. I've had to get principals involved with he and I several times after he's spewed f-bombs at me and threatened me, you name it.

Teachers are not perfect. There are a lot of them that really have no business being in the classroom.....but there are an awful lot of dedicated, awesome ones.

:D That sounds about right. ;) Naw. I like all the teachers my kids have had. :D

"Get a Job that Lets you Have Fun"

this is okay, but we just gotta keep in mind that our job should not be the focus of our life. nothing wrong with making your vocation feel like a vacation, provided no matter what Christ comes first.

If you could let me play my guitar for money or get paid to attend San Francisco Giants games, or critique Marvel comic plots, I'd be in Xanadu. For now, with public education, an adventurous thrill ride will have to be the Tea Cup Ride at Disneyland! ^_^

I think gurney is right the bumper sticker simply means to find a job you enjoy. I like my job and what I do, but I can't say it is my idea of a good time and fun nor is it chore and something I abhor duing.

That's certainly not what i define as "fun." That is what the world defines as fun. Fun to me is reading a good book outside, taking a hike in the forest and looking up at the stars. I also enjoy Baseball (GO DODGERS!) You define what fun is, don't let others or the media define it for you. Indeed, as Orthodox Christians we are told to live apart from the world, and sometimes it hurts. Many of my family members see me as "having no fun", and my former friends in high school were the same way.

That's joy to me, not fun. I remember when a flight attendant asked Fr. Evan if he was happy. He said, "No, but I have joy." When I do things that make me "happy" or feel at peace and good inside, that is joy to me, not really "having fun." I hope that makes sense.

Well, I was painfully shy in high school and a "goody-goody," was how I was looked at because I was pretty prudent and straight on stuff, even though I didn't grow up going to church or knowing Christ's teachings. I was called "Miss Straight-Laced" at the arcade I hung out at from ages 18-21. I played foosball there in tournaments. Yeah, I actually won a few trophies (with my partner...whomever's name came up with mine randomly when we played). Now, that was a lot of "fun." :D

I also think in today's crazy world, if you have to ask this question, you are probably in the right.

Thanks, Matt. I've never been part of the "in" crowd my whole life, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised I see things a bit differently. :)
