Using a Bible that is easier for you to understand while you study is an ok thing, as long as you make sure you understand what is truly being said. In order to get the FULL context of the Bible, it's good to read the direct Greek/Hebrew translations, KJV, and a easier to understand version like the NiV in case you don't comprehend it fully.

They may allow you to use a NKJV but I wouldn't use an ESV since that is based off of manuscripts that remove parts of verses and entire verses. KJV isn't that hard to learn if you take the time. The problem is the most people want to read it quick like a newspaper which you can easily do with an ESV. Reading it a little slower allows it to soak in and helps you to not treat it like just another book.

Have you asked the pastor of said Church the same questions you are asking us, I struggle myself to see why you would not ask the pastor these questions. to see what He says verses asking a bunch of strangers.
This could really turn into a very long thread , with the question what are the differences, maybe you should junk this thread and just sit down with your Pastor sometime, after all If He is the sheppard you have chosen to follow, then He is the one you need to be talking to, not me or anyone else in here on this topic you will only get confused by us folks! But let me say this God said if you seek wisdom to ask Him, He didn't say to change His Word and make it easier!
