then why are so many Christians offended by just plain scripture, If you quote a scripture in many different forums, It can be taken as offensive, even when used in correct context. what is this saying about the term "christian".......to me it appears this term "Christian" can be dropped in front of anything, it seems the title "Christian" is practically meaningless. Christian Buddism....Christian astrology.....Even seen a palm reader have a big cross with Jesus hanging from it in her booth so I guess she's a "Christian" palm reader.......I find it very strange that this name "Christian" finds its way in front of many titles and after bit of investigation these "Christian" entities don't stand for God's truth but actually lead people astray.......any thoughts on this?

I take all these things to point toward the actual respect which Christianity holds in popular culture. Despite what the secular media has attempted to do in trashing both organized Christianity and Christian morality and beliefs, there is still a solid respect for Christianity in American cultural life.

Another example to add to your list can when a young lady rang my doorbell and introduced herself as being from a (mumble, mumble). I had to ask her several times what she had said because she kept mumbling the last two words. Eventually I was able to hear her said that she was from a Christian organizaton. That organization turned out to be the Watchtower Society of the Jehovah's Witnesses. She refused to be identified with the Watchtower Society, but made a vain attempt to be indentified as a Christian. I assured her that neither she nor her organization were Christian and the she ought not to claim the name.

This is basically what comes to mind when I read your introductory post:

Colossians 4:2-6
2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Well, you know, going into some forum and writing something similar to "the fool takes no delight in understanding, only in displaying what he thinks" (Proverbs 18:2), might be taken as offensive; but it's not because the Bible is what is offensive to them. It all depends on context.

There are certainly some who find it offensive, but not every disagreement with an interpretation is a sign of being offended by the text. It's popular to say that (just as it's popular to say that someone isn't being "led by the Spirit" when they disagree with a certain interpretation), but it doesn't make it so.

Agreed. I must add though that a lot of christians have a low self esteem especially when it comes to their faith. Maybe some of them don't know the Bible very well and therefore feel threatened or even attaced whenever they're confronted with scriptures they don't remember having read or can't interpret in a way they feel good about. And the internet is not the best place for building up your faith; many of us at least seam ruder on the screen then they'd be in a face-to-face setting and there's a lot of room for misunderstanding and fighting here whereas a RL setting is more controlled.

I've been wondering about this exact subject for some time now. One time last year I asked someone, on this forum, why they called themselves a Christian when they did not believe in some of the essential doctrines of Christianity. Only to have another member tell me that that I'm not supposed to question someone's Christian faith, and that I could get in trouble for doing so. Now after a year or so on this forum I now know what the answer is. It looks like there are a lot of Christians on this forum who believe in a liberal theology. And I don't mean "liberal politics", even though I believe some, if not most, vote for liberal politicians. I don't believe there is a definitive definition for "liberal theology", but I know some of these Christians do not believe in some of the essential doctrines of the classical Christian church. So if there are no essential doctrines that all Christians believe in, then it looks like anyone can now call themselves a Christian. I think I will start a thread about the essential doctrines of the classical Christian church. It will be interesting to see how many people will tell me that they don't believe in some of them anymore.

I don't consider I have a liberal theological view. I just think we need to speak to those who are seeking an a more understanding, insightful and aware manner. Than possibly coming off as ...well...brash. We not only need to exemplify truth but also love. This does not make my theological view liberal. Now having said this, I'm not suggesting that you are saying it does make my view liberal. However, I do feel it important that I bring up these points. :)

I think they are offended because they do not want to be told they have sin and or need a savior. They want what they want and they are searing their conscious to have it.

It's simple really, it's a manifestation of "rejecting the gospel" that is spoken of in the Bible. They reject God's word as for them, and the outward action is to be offended.

When they stand at judgment for their sins, they will try to point fingers at Christians for WHY they did not receive salvation.

Or when they have refused to hear it time and time again, they will try to say at judgment, "No one told me".

I think it depends on the person. Not everyone has the same motives. Some people want to learn.
