I've had several short stories published; two in a small magazine and three in a university newspaper. Cant get links to them online, but was very proud of them. They were some-what liked, dont see myself ending up as an author though. Got a very small amount for the two in magazine, obviously nothing from the uni newspaper.

1am wondering if your judgment is insulting to anyone [authors]?

If you're going to be in this business, you have to develop a thick skin. So, insulted though some may be, self-publishing has a bad reputation among publishers (and many writers). This is due, in large part, to companies like Publish America.

I think self publishing is not what it used to be. The main thing to focus on though if you want to be published is to try and find an agent to represent you. Just don't become discouraged if it doesn't happen right away. There are plenty of famous books out there that went through many different literary agents offices before one finally agreed to represent the author, (Give a Mouse a Cookie comes to mind, I believe her final number was six, but higher numbers are not uncommon.)

You stuck with the book to complete writing it, now just get out there and sell it to an agent and talk to everyone, you never know who knows someone who may be able to help you.

Good luck! Let us know what happens.

i found out after the fact that a friend's dad was with a publishing house
he never mentioned it to me
another lesson ...
ask everyone you know if they have any contacts in the biz\
this is a good way in.
friends relatives contacts associations
make your own.[/quote]

Great Advice! I have been doing the same thing, while I may not have met anyone who does have great contacts in the publishing world, I have met a few people who have great marketing skills. I've learned one thing, it's easy to work on someone else's project but when it comes to something you yourself have done, some people tend to become blocked with the what if's. Just have confidence and faith in yourself and your work, and things will find a way of working out in the end.

Also Dr. Suess.

There is also a trend now for colleges to create academic presses using print on demand services. This removes the warehousing aspect of publishing, and unpredictability of demand. They recommend all staff and students publish through that service, making all contributors self-published.

There are also thick technical manuals published this way, due to limited markets.

Print on demand is definitely changing the look of publishing, probably more than anyone dares admit.

Ebooks? Hadn't thought of that. Anyone know of a place to submit work other then Christian WORDsearchbible?

Smashwords accept self published ebooks and if they deem them of good quality they also get published on several other sites including Sony ebooks, ibooks, etc.

I've had two books published, "God that Ark Stank" 'funny Bible stories, and "Salvation Army Miscellany".

i don't think that self-publishing is an easy way out...if it the only way to get your work out there, then it is a very courageous move. and in these times, it is a good way to find out if there is a market for your style. as long as it is published, what differenfe does it make how it gets out? smh

I have published a newspaper devotional column for years. I also had an article on the importance of Sunday school published in a teachers' guide book for Adult Bible Studies. Also, a short story, etc. I am working on a book, but am taking a break from it right now.....

I've been working on my book for somewhere around 7 years and have taken it through several complete, and exhaustive , rewrites to accomplish some radical changes in perspective. It's been a long haul -- and not over yet.

Best of luck on your book. Keep on pluggin'!

If you've been published, how long between concept and press for your book?

For me, the longest case scenario from initial concept to press has been seventeen years. In the end, the finished product didn't resemble the initial concept, except in a "first seed" sort of way.

I'd rather have the moniker of self published and collect my royalties than sell out my writing to fit some CBA format just to say, yea I got published through trials and tribulations of 7 years of rejection, degrading my work to conform to an arbitrary editor so that my book will go on the bottom shelf and sell less than 1500 copies and never get published again because I lost the publisher money.

Fact is, I've made enough to take my family on a Hawaiian vacation from a 175 page novel in six months and am building a substantial following that has allowed me to write articles for respected online magazines featured on ABC and FOX news.

Maybe if your work is good enough, you should put it out there and let it COMPETE with everyone. You should be the master of your book, not some cartel of literati wannabees in an office selling books to one market. Old women. This sounds harsh but its the truth.

The 'cheap' way?? Published THEY pay; Self-pub, YOU pay. And there is no easy way.

I've gone both ways.[Christian books] My first book was published after the first two rejections.

My second book, after Crossway finally returned the ms, I went the self=pub route.

Just a note on my experiences with this:

I think being published as an unknown is even harder today. When I first sent my ms out, things were getting a lot harder. In my case, I had sent it to Herald Press, a small but well known Christian publisher. The editor tried to encourage me that I 'almost' made it [they took a well known seminary prof's ms instead, Ron Sider]They only published about 30 books a year but were getting several hundred mss.

Crossway no longer accepts mss. You have to have an agent or something

NOTE: There is a Christian website for writers to display their work and publishers supposedly look at it and contact you if interested...not sure of the name...

ON self-publishing, there are two routes: 1) POD print-on-demand and 2) printing cartons of books. [I've done it both ways]

1) has the advantage of no inventory and low costs if you just go with a basic package. I went with Xulon on my second book [would not recommend]and it was more expensive; they get your book listed on Amazon etc; put you in a book catalogue; display their books at the Chrisian Book Seller's Assoc. etc, ...sounds good...but, really, this is all money down the drain if you are not known.

You can go direct to Lightning Source or Lulu, etc and just do the POD;

2) Finding a printer [always shop around a LOT; big difference in prices]

You have book inventory BUT if you are going to sell books; most are going to be sold by you to begin with so you need books on hand. You can have them on hand the POD route, but at about double the cost per copy. BUT that's not all bad 'cause you don't get stuck with a lot of books that don't sell.

Book printing costs drop substantially at 1000 copies and above. But that is a BIG expense. The avg author sells a couple hundred. Evangel Press in Indiana was the best deal that I found.

In the end, whatever route you take, sales depend a lot on your own promotion.

From some comments on later pages, thought it might be good to move this down for reference for people interested in the various ways to publish.

My first book did go the publisher route. It is now only in ebook except for used books. Christian Pacifism: Fruit of the Narrow Way: Michael Snow: Amazon.com: Kindle Store

This is the 30th Anniversary:

I've seen self-published books that made best-seller status
The days of publishing house cartels and monopoly censorship passed
ppl are awakening to corporate abuse of power and government censorship through corporate monopolies ...

More truths come from whistle-blowers, independents, and rogue writers than the repetitive redundant and stagnant CIA/NSA monitored media slaves ... we are all better off dead than controlled by media fascism.

My FIRST Book fell short only 400 copies in 2000 of best-seller.
