The Importance of Gods Word.

Why is Gods Word (The Holy Bible) important to us? And why is it important to read, and study Gods Word? How does it improve our walk with God when we do? How should we handle Gods Word when bringing it before others?

The answers to all these questions, and more, are written throughout our entire Bible.

Let's discover the answers to these questions together, by posting scriptures that pertain to Gods Word. And looking at what they have to tell us.

Genesis 15:1
After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

The word of the Lord, is the Word of God. It is a shield to us, and an exceeding great reward. We must read and study Gods Word in order to obtain the shield that is needed.

That shield must then be used correctly if we are ever going to be able to gain the great reward. I'm sure we will better understand this part, as more scriptures are posted.

Matthew 4:4
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

I hope you don't mind me posting the same scripture from another Bible version, I enjoy seeing how they read together. I run five different versions on my computer now, so I can read them side by side, and am slowly adding more.

Luke 10:38-42
Now as they went on their way, he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at the Lord's feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving; and she came up to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister did leave me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. But the Lord answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art anxious and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful: for Mary hath chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Here we have the story of Mary and Martha. Martha was anxious and troubled about serving Jesus. Mary was simply sitting at Jesus feet while she heard His Word. Jesus was quick to point out that Mary had chosen what was most important.

So why was Martha so anxious and troubled about serving Jesus? Could it be she accepted Him in, and didn't take the time needed to hear His Word before trying to serve Him.

We need to be more like Mary. We need to sit at the feet of Jesus while we read and study Gods Word. For it is through Jesus that we receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will bring us the understanding we need to study and hear what His Word has to say.

We wont understand how to serve the Lord properly, and will most likely be anxious and troubled ourselves about how we should serve Him. If we don't take the time needed to study and hear His Word with proper guidance first.

 

The Our Daily Bread  thread explains how Jesus was the Word of God come to us in the flesh.

Here's one of the scriptures used in it.

John 1:14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Scripture A sacred writing or book. A passage from such a writing or book. often scriptures. The Bible.

hmmm doesn't seem to mention any difference beetween the old or new testament at all.

Isaiah 40:8
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

John 8:31-32
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

This one tells us we should continue in His Word. This means we must read, and study it continually, not just for a couple months, or so, then drop what we're doing. The more we study Gods Word the more He reveals the truth to us. This serves to set us free form any false teachings we may have picked up along the way.

Not to worry John Paul! No anger here about the question. I agree with what Gerry posted. There's never anything wrong with an honest question. It's only when a question is posted with the intention to stir up strife that it becomes a problem. You're response clearly shows that it was not your intention to stir up any strife
