From what I hear Christians in America are under constant attack for their faith. The other night while watching a Fox news show in which different GOP candidates were being asked by regular folks various questions one woman asked a candidate what he'd do to help ensure that religious freedom would be ensured in his America.

Countless webpages and even countless comments here on CF indicate that Christians are threatened daily with having to go underground to hold secret prayer meetings.

Being an atheist and knowing that it is something I simply don't talk about to most people in my real life I wonder what the Christians who basically run the country and have for 200 years "know" about persecution or having to "hide" who they really are.

Thankfully I know enough about the Bible and Christianity that I can, if needs must, talk the talk. So I can "hide in plain sight".

The most fun thing is when you reveal to someone you are an atheist immediately you have to defend atheism. You have to defend failing to believe something.

When I hear someone say "Oh, I'm a baptist" my first inclination is not to immediately make them defend not being a Presbyterian.

Oh well. It's fun to watch why little children who have 99% of everything scream because someone else is allowed to exist who isn't exactly like them and then complain that everyone else gets everything.

I personally tend to be wary of athiests, but that's because of some nasty individuals I encountered growing up.

That being said, the poll's not surprising. The only time you hear about one in the news is when a dumb one is causing trouble. If the only time you heard of a Baptist was when they were trying to force a religious symbol off of a state seal or putting up billboards mocking others' faith, you'd be a PR nightmare too.

I have nothing against atheists. I used to work with a guy whose wife had a friend that was married to a man who had lunch with an atheist one time. I had no problem with that.

When we know that somebody believes in the possibility of divine punishment, we seem to assume they are less likely to do something unethical.
Why does the name Newt Gingrich come to mind when I read this? Why the thought that there are many believers who use their faith only as a "fire insurance" policy, thinking that they have time to "make it right" before their demise? At least with the atheists I know who have their morals in place, their moral practices are there not out of fear of hell, but out of a belief in just doing the right thing. Those folks I hold in higher regard than the most sanctimonious Christian to walk the earth.

Some of my best friends are atheists. The vast majority of my family too! Many have better moral values then many of my brothers and sisters in Christ.
That's what tends to happen when you actually have to think about what you are doing.

But Christianity is in danger of disappearing!

Consider this ...
Matthew 21:28-32 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

That is atheist, actually.

Now that you have received your first lesson in spelling, we can carry on.

I don't doubt there are nasty atheists out there; there are nasty people of all walks of life. And this could be just because I live in the bible belt and happen to know ten Christians for every one atheist, but with me, it's always been the other way around.

That being said, I do know some truly amazing people who are Christians, have Christian friends, family, and people I would die for. However, in terms of "being rotten," my experience has always come down to "I am a Christian, therefore I can do this and be justified." These also tend to be people who announce themselves as a Christian thirty seconds into an introductory conversation. I wonder if these nasty atheists you mentioned do the same and/or get overly confrontational.

I like to paraphrase Mike Huckabee. I'm an atheist, but I'm not angry about it. Atheism doesn't define me. It's a side product of my belief that rationality is a virtue. My reasoning tells me that a belief in the Christian God is not warranted. But I am fine with those whose reasoning has led them in the opposite direction. In a country were Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness are held up as ideals, this really shouldn't be a problem.

Atheists are a Godless bunch if you ask me :ahah:

Yes indeed :)

And Christians and atheists have alot more in common than you think. We reject the existence of every god you do. Except one.

But it is, Grizz. In fact your atheism getting out could impede your pursuit of happiness, couldn't it?

That's too bad. Some of the most "objective" people in the world are atheists. At least that's my experience.

That being said, the poll's not surprising. The only time you hear about one in the news is when a dumb one is causing trouble. If the only time you heard of a Baptist was when they were trying to force a religious symbol off of a state seal or putting up billboards mocking others' faith, you'd be a PR nightmare too.
But ... isn't that the situation Christians face now. The MSM constantly trots out the Westboro Baptist Church as if it were a real church, rather than a legal anomaly.

Sad, but true.
