Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus || Spoken Word - YouTube

It’s worth beginning with this: I agree with this guy on a lot of points. He reminds us Catholics of a striking truth; that without a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, religion is a joke. He speaks the truth that Christ died for all sins, once and for all. I can’t help but think, in the midst of all this, “This hating-religion-loving-Jesus thing is the logical consequence of Protestantism.” For a 21st-century Protestant looking at a thousand-something churches, I imagine there is an immense temptation to say “It’s all a wash. I will follow Christ, not a religion,” and be done with it. I empathize with him, knowing that if I were a Protestant I would be in full agreement: There is either one, true religion or there is no religion at all.

But nevertheless, there are two main problems with this video. 1. Jesus Christ would strongly disagree with it. That is to say, the creator of this video is very, very wrong. 2. He’s very, very wrong with some great video editing, good background music, a strong emotional appeal, catchy rhyme, and all in relatively well-timed YouTube moment. He’s wrong in style. When a man gains immense popularity by making blanket statements stylistically, how likely is it that his followers will read a rebuttal making specific statements prosaically? I don’t know, but rebut I must, for it is the duty of the Catholic to resist fashion and fads, no matter how unfashionable he looks doing it.

UGH, THIS GUY

HE NEEDS TO GO AWAY

He's been all over my facebook feed for 2-3 days and I want to scream.

Religion isn't defined as what this guy is rebelling against. Way too many people have a faulty definition of religion.

Someone on my facebook said this:
One word suffices to annihilate his whole rant: "covenant." A covenant is an agreement, and and agreement is that whereby two parties consent to do something for each other in an exchange. Now for a covenant to be such, it must be binding. The Latin word meaning "to bind" is "religare," the origin of the word "religion." And Christ Himself said He came to establish a new covenant. So all this stuff about God without religion is [silly] in the utmost.

This dude knows what he is talking about.

OK, this has been on my Facebook for the last few days too. I didn't watch it because I knew it would be annoying, but seeing it here now, I decided to press play. Yep, annoying. Nice article by Marc at Patheos though.

The only slightly more annoying phenomenon right now is everyone on my Facebook posting that incredibly old chain story about a young Albert Einstein humiliating his atheist teacher. Everyone keeps commenting on how amazing and touching it is, and I just want to send them all to Snopes.com.

Jared, I think you need to be on my facebook. I talk about three things: 1. books, 2. games, 3. theology. And occasionally... everyday silliness.

I also added some thoughts on my wall...to quote (what I had said, and I think adding to the Patheos article):
Really, it's the same thing that has been said millions of times by those who desire to be "spiritual" but not "religious." I'm on vacation and would prefer not to write a treatise for or against (because there are some things he says that are very good to hear). People of a religion are not perfect, none of us are. However, one thing is clear: we are not created to be alone. Religion gives us not only a tradition and tools to practice our spirituality and come to know Jesus, but also gives us a community to be accountable to. The Church is made of sinners, which is one of the reasons why we gather in community every Sunday and (for some) even daily: to pray for forgiveness and to ask for the grace to be the people God calls us to be.

The OP video DOES make a good point of hypocrisy in the Church and pharisaic attitude. BUT, that is a judgment nobody on earth can make or know about and ignores the purpose of Church and religion in general.

Another sad product of American faith. He has a religion. It is his own. He is against organized religion. He sees his brothers and sisters as hypocrites and rants against them instead of seeing the plank in his own eye.

We have become so individualistic that we have created our own pieced together religions. "You just need Jesus" is BS. It is a way of escaping the need for community which is not what Jesus wanted.

Jesus created the Church. He created people. And this dude wants to justify his own radical love of self under the guise of 'just believing in Jesus'. Jesus is whatever he makes of Him, because he has no religion. This video is religious narcissism and it is catching on.

Should you hate religion just because a guy on YouTube told you to?
Certainly someone can go to church (any church) and not have a relationship with Christ. But, religion doesn't have to be the cause of such problems. Thus, this video (and other's who believe this line of reasoning) believe religion is an institutional and man-made construct that keeps us from a true relationship with God. False.

Sometimes I think you are me.

That is, if I were male and a seminarian and stuff.

One of the best statements I've read on here in a long time.

Oh, it will. :) I haven't viewed it on FB, and I didn't view it here...simply because I know I wouldn't be able to keep from commenting about this same old ridiculous fake dichotomy. You cannot chose Jesus over religion...that's like choosing oxygen over breathing.
