Gday guys, thought I would start an interesting discussion about games such as Magic: The Gathering, Final Fantasy, and Pokemon. Hardline Fundy Protestants believe they are demonic.

My thoughts are this. Why is it games that have references to "summoning" and "Magic" that are targeted? If we follow this logic we must throw Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia into the batch.

I mean how often do you hear people say "Call of Duty is sin cause you kill people", I just seem to think alot of christians are so paranoid about magic that they cant discern when something is indeed demonic (where you actually worship satan or false deities in real life) or something that is a work of complete fiction, in a fictional universe.

What are your thoughts?

Because such things as "magic" and "summoning" are blatantly easy targets. Frankly, if people target video games because of "magic" than they ought to target every single Disney movie made from the 1930s to the late 1940s because isn't it "magic" to turn a pumpkin into a carriage? Or to turn arrows into roses?
I think part of why many, such as fundy Protestants, target video games is because of the kids who thought that Dungeons and Dragons was real way back when.

So long as one is able to differentiate between reality and fiction, than play your video games. I play a few, I love the ones I play and I know that it is not real. Besides, Protestants seem to have an obsession with seeking out anything that is "demonic".

The Jack Chick tract on Dungeons and Dragons is timelessly hilarious.

Dang it, all that praying to Talos for nothing. Yeah, I'm an Elder Scrolls fan.

Which is now forbidden by those horrid Thalmor people.

And I was praying to Dibella how do you think I feel?

:p

Nah, Julianos is the best.

...not that I honestly have any idea what the differences between Divines really are. I know Julianos is the mages Divine, and Talos was Tiber Septim. I like Azura because you get a reusable Soul Gem, and another of the Daedra gave you that awesome unbreakable Skeleton Key lockpick... mmm! And then there's Sithis, of course.

You know, it's funny. I've been playing D&D for well over 20 years now, about to start a 2nd-ed. campaign, and I've yet to see any of the weird stuff Jack Chick warns of. No demons rising to eat my soul, no one killing themself because the Nameless Horror (Richie, our DM) ate their level 10 cleric, no running out and killing people for "experience points" (except maybe that time we all almost threw the Nameless Horror out of a third story window...but vodka and a stupid battle were involved...), no confusing a fictional halfling for a real person ( I am not a hobbit, blast it!). Beginning to think I'm playing the wrong game.

Now Uno? That's a game spawned in the darkest pits of hades if ever there was one...^_^
