After reading the Vanity Fair article posted by Damaris, it seems like a classic case of Nationalization. Some of those properties were actually worthless, they had decrepit arenas and other structures that would cost a developer a fortune to demolish and redevelop. The monks were successful in redeveloping that land and now the jealous socialists want to take it back.
