Even the monastery spells it Vatopaidi, and Elder Ephraim has not been charged with any crimes. Judging by the fact that this is your only post, I suspect that you are a troll.

Τhe monastery is responsible for too many things, will not allow them to change also the Greek Orthography! Only people sick in their minds would confuse Efraim with Mt. Athos or Orthodoxy itself! Efraim is charged with many fallonies that why he has put in jail, in order "not to commit any further crimes"! Capish?

What crimes exactly? Ive read some vague accusations but nothing concrete. How did he swindle the greek federal government? I mean this is just toooooo funny. A monk outsmarted the elite socialists in the government in a real estate transaction. Now their left holding the bag and need a scapegoat. Keep electing these ivy league educated drones and things will continue to get worse.

The reason Greece is in trouble is not because of a monk but because the people are lazy and stupid, plain and simple.

Buzuxi, there was a great article in Vanity Fair in 2010 that basically takes your viewpoint.

Monks from Vatopedi basically exchanged a piece of worthless land that they had held for centuries, for some prime real estate in Athens. They did this with the full knowledge and cooperation of the people they were trading with.

The monastery made a lot of money from renting out the prime real estate, and uses that income to repair their monastery and do charity work. Or at least they did, until their bank accounts were frozen!

I think the accusations are ludicrous, and are just based on hostility towards the church because it is wealthy and untaxed. The whole situation is sad and awful, but the whole point of not taxing churches is so they can do the exact things Vatopedi does with its income.

God protect the monks of Athos, and especially Geronda Efraim. I wonder if there's a way to petition to give him asylum in Russia or another country. Maybe he can be like the other Geronda Efraim and seed Athonite monasteries overseas. :)

It has been proved that the state lost nothing in the land exchange. In fact, the monastery has historically been cheated out of land by the state, which has never honoured its side of the deal. The so-called "Vatopaidi scandal" was created by the PASOK party to bring down the previous government...that is the same party (American/EU puppet government) that has just destroyed Greece...so now they are looking for a scapegoat and are dragging out the Vatopaidi/ Elder Efraim scandal to try and cover themselves. For anyone who knows Greek there is documentary, showing that the whole thing was a set up and how the media has helped to twist the facts and drag Elder Efraim and the monastery through the mud.

This is just the beginning of the war against the Church...

Vatopaidi actually appears to have two alternative spellings reflecting the (at least) two different theories regarding the origin of the name :).

Everyone who has at least an elementary knowledge of the Greek Language understands that the only right form is Vatopedi, which means the fiels with the bushes. This form appears in all the documents from the 10th c. till 19th c. The form "Vatopaidi" is just [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]s of uneducated monks. This last [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] forms has appeared first time in the beginning of the 19th c., in use only by this certain monastery, and by NOONE ELSE because they would like to prove in this ridicule paretymological way, that allegedly the monastery existed since the 4th c. !!!!!!!! To prove real the myth that the child Arcadius, the son of the Emperor Theodosius I, and future Emperor himself, has found refuge in the monastery's site after a reck, ant this way he built the monastery, which is just a fairy-tale! But if the monks want to be called "Vatopaidenoi" I have no objection. In this case there is only one meaning in Greek: a compound word of the verb: "vateuo" [=I [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]] and the word "paidi" [=child].....!!! So they can chose and they have done it. Period.

That post would make a lot more sense (maybe) if you swore less. And the people you're speaking to *speak* Greek - note the flags after their names. Kreik is not currently in Greece, but Julia is (and studying there, which takes a reasonable grasp of the language) despite not being Greek herself.

If you could discuss in a rational way without insulting or swearing you might actually be able to have a decent conversation.

Born in today's Greece or live in Greece does not mean that you know Greek. The majority of the modern Greek Youth know some broken 600 greek words that they speak it with an english syntax. This is my last replu in here. This forum is too purist or protestantic for a Greek Orthodox like me! Ante kai kala krasa!

LOL at the 'this is protestant' - really? Wow.

And even more so LOL at the 'greek youth only know broken greek that they speak with English syntax' - really? Riiiiight. In the diaspora a little bit probably, but actually in Greece? I'm pretty sure they speak Greek. And they tease the poor Australian Greeks no end when they go back even if they speak alright Greek - the accent and attitude gives them away (even my priest, a monk, got spotted as an Aussie even without talking!).

Yay Kreik - what are you doing now that you're back there? :)

Well GO still hasnt given us any reason to doubt the elder's innocense. Kathemerini newspaper wrote an editorial hinting that perhaps the EP is behind the arrest. That the Phanar is worried with the elder's cozy relationship with the MP and russian leaders and wants him out and replaced with someone more loyal to Constantinople's interests.

After reading the Vanity Fair article posted by Damaris, it seems like a classic case of Nationalization. Some of those properties were actually worthless, they had decrepit arenas and other structures that would cost a developer a fortune to demolish and redevelop. The monks were successful in redeveloping that land and now the jealous socialists want to take it back. Quite simple how it works, trump up some bogus charges, tell the ignorant masses that the two monks acted like oligarchs and seize their private assets. Lets take a look at the definition of renationalization:

A renationalization occurs when state-owned assets are privatized and later nationalized again, often when a different political party or faction is in power. A renationalization process may also be called reverse privatization. Nationalization has been used to refer to either direct state-ownership and management of an enterprise or to a government acquiring a large controlling share of a nominally private, publicly listed corporation.'

Is there any doubt as to whats going on???

Yeah it seems as if Elder Efraim is the fall guy in a money grab by the Greek government in a time where their economic situation (and political bufoonery) is being laid bare for all to see.
