Psalms 119:9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

After Jesus had risen from the dead He met two of His disciples on the road to Emmaus. In this passage there is a picture and an example of how we study the written word of God.

Luke 24:13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
Luke 24:14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
Luke 24:15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

Remember that Jesus promised:

Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

We see in verse 15 That as they communed together Jesus HIMSELF drew near and went with them.

Luke 24:16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
Luke 24:17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
Luke 24:18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
Luke 24:19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
Luke 24:20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
Luke 24:21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
Luke 24:22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;
Luke 24:23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
Luke 24:24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

Luke 24:25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
Luke 24:26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

Remember that Jesus told the disciples of these things before this time.

Mark 8:31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

Then they asked Him to abide to go in to the village and abide with them.

Luke 24:28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.
Luke 24:29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

Remember that Jesus had told them this:

John 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

Luke 24:30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
Luke 24:31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

They communed with Him, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. Remember what Jesus said regarding Himself?

John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Our walk with Jesus is not so different from these two disciples who walked along the road to Emmaus.

They had heard the things that Jesus had spoken to them before the cross, but it wasn’t until He opened up His word to them and expounded on the things that were written that they could say that their “hearts burned within them as HE opened up the word to them.”

They then asked Him to abide with them when they came to the city that they were going.

HE went in with them, and HE broke the bread, blessed it and gave to them. This is a picture of Him communing with them just as HE did at the last supper.

Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

They heard HIM and they supped with HIM, and when HE broke bread, blessed it and gave to them They knew who HE was and He vanished from their site.

When we go into the word of God Jesus gave us clear instruction on how we should do this.

He said, that we should come as little children and that we should seek, knock and ask.

Matthew 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
Matthew 7:8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened
.

Matthew 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

As we read the word we should ask HIM to abide with us. As we read we should put our own ideas aside and ask HIM for that manna from heaven. Remember that manna means. “What is it?”

From Strong’s concordance:

4479: man mawn from 4100; literally, a whatness, (so to speak), i.e. manna (So called from the question about it):__manna

Jesus promised in John 8:31-32

“…If you continue in My word you are MY disciples indeed, and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”

James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

So again, it is written.

Psalms 119:9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

I wanted to add another verse regarding our study of the word.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
