Christmas implies Christian and excludes everyone else. Holiday is for everyone. Government is not suppose to exclude people based on religion since Christians are not the only ones paying taxes and living here.

Maybe at some point in the distant past this was true but certainly not today. The word "Christmas" today invokes many secular items, traditions, and rituals as much as it does anything religious. The word "Christmas" is, for better or worse, as much a secular phrase invoking secular concepts as it is religious implying religious ideas. As a result, the word "Christmas" doesn't imply Christian to the exclusion of everyone else.
The Christmas holiday has been celebrated by the overwhelming majority of Americans for a long, long time. Why, even in my youth my atheist family put up the pagan tree and had presents under it! Golly gosh, we even sang all the traditional Christmas carols! The ones that glorified Christ as King. So for me this whole separation of Christmas from the state is ludicrous. Christmas is as secular a holiday as there can ever be.

I agree. The word "Christmas" invokes as much secularism as it does anything religious. With the word "Christmas" adults and children think Santa Claus, reindeer, a reindeer with a shiny nose, Frosty the Snowman, a pagan symbol we decorate and put presents under, secular movies which go along with the holiday, and all of those secular songs. Yeah, I'd say Christmas is as secular phrase as much as it is religious.

But isn't the secularization and commercialization of Christmas a far grander assault on Christmas than saying "Happy Holidays"?

Tell that to the Jews.

And it that were true, then why would you care if some people have a holiday tree?

The holiday is Christmas Day, a Federal holiday by law.

Which it shouldn't be.

I'd prefer the government keep its hands off our holy days.

I believe that the only way the government gets away with declaring Christmas as a holiday is that it has become sufficiently secular.

I don't care if they have a Holiday Tree. I just find it futile, stupid, and pointless to feel it necessary to move away from calling a tree a Christmas Tree and instead call it a Holiday Tree.

Furthermore, just because the Jews have a different reason to celebrate the season does not magically transform the words "Christmas" into an exclusive Christian without any secular consideration attached to the word. In other words, your reference to the "Jews" is irrelevant to the issue being discussed, which is whether the phrase "Christmas" is sufficiently secular as to render silly those attempts by the local and state governments to no longer use the word "Christmas" in relation to state matters or conduct.

By today's legal standards, this is a true and accurate answer, along with the fact there is a secular reason for the holiday, or at least the court's can conceive of a secular reason, which is enough legally.

Fox News did an unintentionally hilarious week-long segment about this "issue".

Apparently our religious freedom is under attack because someone wanted to call a tree lighting ceremony, a tree lighting ceremony instead of a christmas tree lightning. Laura Ingrahm stressed our religous freedom was on the rocks WHILE WEARING A VISIBLE GOLDEN CROSS ON LIVE NATIONAL TELEVISION.

Then she claimed the pilgrims came here and died for the right to celebrate christmas, when in actual they declared it sacrelige and had it outlawed, giving a fine to anyone who dare say "Merry Christmas".

Good Grief.

You would think so wouldn't you?

Yet there are people on these boards who get downright hostile if a company isn't trying to exploit their religious beliefs for profit.
