It's an old family tradition
Christmas implies Christian and excludes everyone else. Holiday is for everyone. Government is not suppose to exclude people based on religion since Christians are not the only ones paying taxes and living here.
The Christmas holiday has been celebrated by the overwhelming majority of Americans for a long, long time. Why, even in my youth my atheist family put up the pagan tree and had presents under it! Golly gosh, we even sang all the traditional Christmas carols! The ones that glorified Christ as King. So for me this whole separation of Christmas from the state is ludicrous. Christmas is as secular a holiday as there can ever be.Maybe at some point in the distant past this was true but certainly not today. The word "Christmas" today invokes many secular items, traditions, and rituals as much as it does anything religious. The word "Christmas" is, for better or worse, as much a secular phrase invoking secular concepts as it is religious implying religious ideas. As a result, the word "Christmas" doesn't imply Christian to the exclusion of everyone else.
