From what I can see on this thread as well as a few others, there seems to be a big "hang up" on tradition not explicitly lain out in scripture.

There's nothing wrong with tradition that DOES NOT supercede scripture.

Just think about it, what kind of simple traditions one has in their family from how the dinner table is dressed for shabbat, to what we wear on shabbat, to what we eat on shabbat or the holidays... to how we dress our shoes or button our coats or how we brush our teeth and dress our hair ;)

Really think about the things that our parents hand down to us and how we go and implement our own homes - up to and including how we cook certain items.

Think about it before a child asks "Mommy/Daddy, why do you do ______ this way?"

"Well, my parents did and i got used to it.." or whatever.

In fact, as far as our own personal Halacha, how we came to do what we do- was it the tradition of our forefathers, or the man/woman who discipled us? Or was it that we read a rabbi's commentary and said "whoo-rah! I'm doin' that!"?

Really think about it.

While there are some bad things that came with the Maccabees (Compromised preisthood) - there were some good things, and things that enabled Y'shua to come and be present, accounted for and examined in the Temple - things that couldn't have been done if it was not rededicated.

Another thing... It is written when the temple was destroyed and there is a fast day.. should we also not keep it and mourn it?

I mean, there's no win or loss if we don't- except on our own part. These are the non essential feast and fast days... but we do see Y'shua taking part in scripture, though it's not implicitly spelled out for the Greek/western mindset to say "ohhhhhhh look here he is spinning dreidels and lighting the menorah" -- but he is present and commenting and not forbidding, which is markedly different from many things He could have been doing instead!

Remember the passage:

Romans 14
5 In the same way, some think one day is more holy than another day, while others think every day is alike. You should each be fully convinced that whichever day you choose is acceptable. 6 Those who worship the Lord on a special day do it to honor him. Those who eat any kind of food do so to honor the Lord, since they give thanks to God before eating. And those who refuse to eat certain foods also want to please the Lord and give thanks to God. 7 For we don’t live for ourselves or die for ourselves. 8 If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9 Christ died and rose again for this very purpose—to be Lord both of the living and of the dead. 10 So why do you condemn another believer ? Why do you look down on another believer? Remember, we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 For the Scriptures say,
“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,
‘every knee will bend to me,
and every tongue will confess and give praise to God.’”
12 Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God. 13 So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall.

For those just starting out, a good "how to" can be found at www.biblicalholidays.com <-- she has something on everything, and her book is great for homeschooling, Shabbas school or just celebrating at home with the little ones.

I purchased the book to check it out and have something to do when/if I have any small ones.

FFOZ has a great book or two, but I haven't checked them out.

I purchased my copy of Maccabees 1 & 2 from a local bookseller and read the story there. You can also read it online here.

Is Maccabees rejected because Roman Catholic added it?
