WASHINGTON -- Moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins broke party ranks Wednesday, supporting a tax hike on millionaires and billionaires in order to fund a tax break for working Americans.

The senator from Maine also skewered a key GOP talking point by differentiating the wealthy, described in nearly all Republican rhetoric as "job creators," from the people who actually create jobs -- otherwise known as employers.

....arguing that job creators and the rich are not one and the same, and that actual job creators are businesses, such as small corporations and partnerships, that hire people

Why dont the libs just call it the "Robbing Peter to pay Paul Act." I cant think of a more stark example of a direct wealth transfer than taxing one group to pay for tax cuts granted to another. And to think there are still those out there who have convinced themselves that this isnt theft.

If a reduction in my tax burden was made possible by an increase in yours, I would reject it.

What if the reduction in your tax burden permits you to buy more of my products? Or what if the reduction in your tax burden means that you can survive on a marginally lower salary without sacrificing your standard of living? In either event, I'd we'd both seeing as either my revenues increase or operating costs decrease.

This is showing the impact the Occupy movement is having. In a world where Occupy had never happened, Republicans would've held these tax cuts hostage without suffering any ill repercussions. In this world, Occupy has thrust income inequality to the forefront of the political debate -- so much so that typically immovable Republicans are afraid to feed that narrative. In other words, a ragtag bunch of hippies with supposedly no demands have done what Democrats have never been able to do -- get Republicans to cry "uncle". :D

Republicans have offered to offset the cut in payroll taxes with spending cuts which, oddly enough, is the way most people run their household budgets

Spending cuts where? Programs that effect the middle-class and the poor?

Of course programs that affect the middle class and poor. You don't want them cutting subsidies to corporations and no-bid contracts. Why, that'd be crazy talk! :p

What makes you think that only the Federal government (the one Obama has authority over) engages in no-bid contracts?

State, County, City governments and publicly-funded quasi-governmental agencies aren't subject to laws that affect federal contracting (unless there are stipulations relative to the use of Federal funds to support a specific program).

But thanks for completely missing the point. ^_^^_^^_^

Is it your contention that there is no room for spending cuts?

I can only speak for myself, but I've seen a chart in someone's signature that illustrates very well where spending can be very easily cut.

Yes, those too.

When Obama said "We all have to sacrifice" was that just code for 'tax the rich', just class warfare?

Oh...wait a minute.
looking around....the ones who HAVE sacrificed ARE the working class. It hasn't become class warfare until we started fighting back.

"Warfare" is always initiated by those who have the means and power do do so. In the case of class warfare in the United States that would be the ruling class. Defending against such an attack is not engaging in warfare, it is simply defending ones self.

Some people get a raise, invest and/or get a second job to stay within their means.
