Just so you know, that's what rubber bullets are for, nonlethal crowd control

Why don't you try and sell that to those who have been killed by the rubber bullets from police?

Looked to me he was walking parallel to the police line (you know, to photograph them) as one guy behind him yells at the police. He sounded compliant by asking if he had backed up enough from the police. You know, the beginning of the video where he was indeed moving away from them.

And it looked nothing like he was trying to flank anything. Do you even know what flanking is?

Yes, it sounds peaceful. Unless video taping from 20 feet away is an act of aggression. I'm sure Rodney King would appreciate that.
If anyone else in any crowd was doing something, why did he get shot?

Remember, video taping police activity is "non-compliant" and "criminal" activity. However, unmanned drones monitoring your personal activity is just the police doing their job.

Sorry, as Americans we have the right to peacefully assemble. Just because someone else did something, or someone graffiti'd something doesn't give the police the right to take it out on someone who was just filming them. If the cameraman was spraying graffiti, or if the cameraman was being violent, that would have been one thing, but you seem to think that just because other people have been unruly, that gives the police the right to act however they want.

Yelling things at the police is not violent by the way.

No. What I think is that if you're in a riot, don't be surprised if you get some violence done to you, either by accident or by design.

If they're peaceably assembled, why doesn't the cameraman show what the other protestors are doing in his footage? The only things that I can learn from that footage is that he's with a group of people that are out at night, shouting obscenities at the police, he paces along the line of police that are deployed in a riot control formation for some reason, and then he gets hit by a rubber bullet fired by a police officer.

So there's a guy who's with a group of people at night who are pacing along a line of police that are deployed in a riot control formation, who are yelling obscenities at the police, and it just happens to be in an area where people have been rioting. Sounds like the classic recipe for a peaceful protest, doesn't it?

Conservatives always rush to the defense of big brother when the victim is part of a class or group they don't like. In fact they seem to idolize the armed enforcement wing of government - the cops. The idea that conservatives are opposed to government / big brother is just a myth. They are statists just like the democrats they stick the label too. They just idolize the wing of the government that gets to carry guns and crack skulls like the police and military.

Or maybe someone is trying to make himself like like a victim of the police.

No. His post was spot on. Your attempts to defend the cop's actions look like a hummingbird trying to change the direction of a hurricane.

When cops illegally removed cindy sheehan because of a shirt she was wearing your camp cheered it for weeks but if it had been a pro war person you would have screamed liberal fascism. That is just one example.

Experts in police use of force shocked by Oakland video

Geoffrey Alpert, a University of South Carolina criminal justice professor who's an expert in police decision-making and use of force, said the video left him "astonished, amazed and embarrassed.""Unless there's something we don't know, that's one of the most outrageous uses of a firearm that I've ever seen," he said. "Unless there's a threat that you can't see in the video, that just looks like absolute punishment, which is the worst type of excessive force."
"It looks terrible," agreed Sam Walker, a professor emeritus of criminal justice at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, who consulted with Oakland police on the federal consent decree emerging from the Riders scandal. "It certainly looks like they singled him out to be shot ... and there does not appear to have been any sort of attack by the protester. Clearly, the camera is not approaching the officers, so they couldn't claim that he posed a threat."
Paul Chevigny, professor emeritus at the New York University School of Law, said it looks like "a violation of his First Amendment rights apart from being a violation of his Fourth Amendment rights. He has a right to take a film of what the police do -- we've been over this thousands of times -- unless he's interfering in some way.
"The basic problem of police retaliating against people who are trying to record what's going on is perennial," said Chevigny, adding this occurs all over the nation. "They (officers) consider it a kind of 'contempt of cop.' It's an expression of the fact that people do not trust the police. The police read it as a criticism of them. It's not even necessarily that they're trying to prevent people from seeing what they're doing.
"But this extreme version (of retaliation) is very unfamiliar to me," he added. "I can't imagine what they're going to say about shooting this guy. Sounds like the Oakland police need a little brush-up on their training."

This is a bunch of garbage. The mayor giving all public SERVANTS a day off and permission to protest and told the police, try to keep the peace. All the while they are all union but demonize the police dept when the Fire dept. BBQ's for the protesters. What insanity. A family friend of ours as a police officer was dispatched to the protest in oakland and was on duty 72 hours. I would have said screw Oakland.... I wouldn't jeopardize my well being when city officials and its citizens are set on destroying itself.

So, if the "perp" did some jumping jacks, he wouldn't have been assaulted by the cops?

I mean, jumping jacks is moving.
If a cop told you to move, would you start doing jumping jacks? If you ever get in that situation, let me know how it works out.

your defending these jackbooted thugs like a real statist bootlicker would; he was videotaping, at a wide distance; if some cop yelled out some stupid, muffled, incoherent instructions through their gas masks, its his fault for not being able to hear it?

It didn't really seem that he was compliant.

And what bull-crap evidence do you have to support this nonsense?

It sounded like the crowd was probably yelling epithets at the police.

I never was shot for doing that. Infact, its perfectly within your rights to yell at police things like "Thug!" "Fascist!" and "pig!" at a protest.

It actually seemed like he was trying to flank the police. If he was a peaceful protestor, why was he moving parallel to the line of police instead of away from the line of police?

What about this is violent? What about this warrants shooting someone? He was video taping the police line; he was documenting reality. He was recording history.

What about that is so bad? The police are just paranoid idiots from what we can tell.

Also notice how he doesn't show anyone else in the crowd, or what anyone else in the crowd is doing. It seems as though that photographer was running with a crowd of people yelling obscenities at the police. Hmm. Sure sounds peaceful, doesn't it?

Words aren't violence. Shooting someone using words, however, IS violence.

What kind of brainless moron thinks words are violence to justify police brutality?
