Hi, How do Messianic Jews interpret Acts 1:8, "You shall receive power"?

Do you want power? Do you need it?

Can you point me to the site that explains scriptures according to the Messianic rabbis? Thanks.
On the role of the Holy Spirit, here are some things I consider

For when Jesus came, he came primarily as a man experiencing the POWER of the Holy Spirit working thru him----as scriptures note like Luke 6:19 , which says that sick people from Judea, Jerusalem, Tyre, and Sidon were trying to touch Jesus because power was flowing from Him and healing them all...and the same with Luke 5:17 when it says that the dunamis power of the Lord was present for healing the sick....

Notice that after Jesus was baptized in water, the Holy Spirit descended on Him (Luke 3:21-22, below). Was this done to seal Jesus with the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of His salvation (as in Ephesians 1:13-14)? Obviously not, because Jesus was not in need of salvation. Then why did Jesus need the Holy Spirit? Philippians 2:7 says that Jesus emptied Himself before becoming human, which means that He "set aside His self-willed use of deity when He became a man" (The Bible Knowledge Commentary, Walvoord and Zuck, Dallas Theological Seminary, p.654). In order to be born as a human, Jesus voluntarily set aside His glory and His power. On earth, Jesus was our perfect role model because He was the perfect human (He is both God and man), and He received the Holy Spirit in order to be empowered for His ministry on earth. This can be demonstrated by following the sequence of events in Luke's Gospel and in Acts:

"When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove." (Luke 3:21-22)

"You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached-- how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him." (Acts 10:37-38)

"Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry." (Luke 3:23)

"Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil." (Luke 4:1-2)

"When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside." (Luke 4:13-14)

Notice the sequence of events: First, we are told that Jesus was baptized in water and then He received the Holy Spirit (not as a guarantee of His salvation, but for spiritual empowerment). We are also told that God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power. Next, Jesus began His ministry after receiving the Holy Spirit and power. We are then told that He allowed Himself to be led by the Spirit rather than deciding on His own what He wished to do, just as we are meant to be led by the Holy Spirit rather than following our own wishes and desires. Finally, we see Jesus returning to Galilee in the power of the Holy Spirit after resisting the devil in the desert. So even though Jesus is the Son of God, the above passages tell us that He needed to receive the empowerment of the Holy Spirit for His earthly ministry.__________________

If Jesus needed the power of the Holy Spirit for ministry, how much more do we in the times we live in?? And as John 14-16 note, Jesus had to leave if we were to recieve the same empowerment that He had via the Holy Spirit so we could do as He did. Paul noted the same as well in II Corinthians 3 with the New Glory..and many other texts prior to that have spoken in depth on the issue.

For the Holy Spirit came upon others in the OT and yet the Spirit of God did not necessarily DWELL with others---though it dwelt with Christ.

. In John 14:15-30, Jesus made clear that the Holy Spirit WOULD INDWELL Jesus' followers forever, functioning as Jesus' emissary in his physical absence. The Divine presence was promised to Jesus' followers. This does not eman that there was no work of the SPirit of God within believers prior to this time---but rather that the Holy Spirit "will be in you" in a new and more powerful sense after Pentecost.

John 7:39 is exceptionally clear that the Spirit had NOT been given yet...and as it concerns the work of the Holy Spirit in the world prior to Jesus in His resurrection, one can go to Genesis 1:2. For the Spirit was present in the world hovering over the fact of the waters (Genesis 6:3, Genesis 41:38, Exodus 31:3, Numbers 11:25). Some OT Verses speak of the Spirit of God at work within believers prior to the coming of Christ (Numbers 27:18, Deuteronomy 34:9, Ezekiel 2:2, Ezekiel 3:24, Daniel 4:8-9, Daniel 4:18, Daniel 5:11, Micah 3:8, Luke 1:15, Luke 1:41, Luke 1:67). The verse must be understood that the the Spirit had not been given in a FULL and powerful sense that was promised for the New Covenant AGE (Ezekiel 36:26, Ezekiel 37:14, Joel 2:28-29, John 20:22, Acts 2:1-13).....

John 16:4-15 speaks again on the subject, as it concerns how Jesus made clear that as long as he was on the Earth he could be in only one place at a time...whereas the Holy Spirit would carry on Jesus' ministry over the entire world at all times. In addition, in God's sovereign plan for the unfolding of History, the Holy Spirit would not come in new covenant power and fulness until Jesus returned to Heaven (John 15:16)....and the Helper coming refers back to the anticipatiopn of the pouring out of the Spirit and the inauguration of the Kingdom spoken of in OT Prophetic literature (e.g. Isaiah 11:1-10, Isaiah 32:14-18, Isaiah 42:1-4, Isaiah 44:1-5, Jeremiah 31:31-34, Ezekiel 11:17-20, Joel 2:28-32, etc). The Spirit would come to bring convinction to the Word and the promise of the Spirit has a broader application to all believers as the Holy Spirit leads and guides us (Romans 8:14, Galatians 5:18).

Paul also sought to speak on this more in-depth in II Corinthians 5:11-17. For the redeemption of a people who now live for Christ by living for others, effeced by the Power of the Spirit and the death of Christ, is the beginning of the new creation that was destined to come admist this evil age (Isaiah 43:18-19, Isaiah 65:17-23, Isaiah 66:22-23). This new creation is also the beginning of Israel's final restoration from God's judgement in the exile....and the ministry of RECONCILLIATION is an expression of God's saving activity in Christ (Romans 5:10-11, Colossians 1:20-22). It is a ministry of forgivness of sins by virtue of Christ's death......and Paul was sent to be God's prophetic minister of the new covenant to announce God's "new peace treaty" (Isaiah 53:5) with those who will trust in Christ o free them fom the penalty and power of sin (Romans 10:15, I Corinthains 15:3, Romans 3:21-26).

Paul took this so seriously that he indicated in II Corinthians 5:9-10 that it was his goal to always be ready

As it concerns the subject of power, depending on whatever camp you may come from will determine exactly the perspective you may get when it comes to being Messianic Jewish. For many, the focus is so much upon "Torah/Law" that anything remotely related to following the Holy Spirit (who empowered others to do ministry, per Acts 1-2 and other instances throughout Acts as well as I Corinthians 12)...all of that is ignored. Others, however, are very much from a Pentecostal or Charismatic perspective.

And for many others in circles of the Charismatic Movement/Pentecostal movement, which I grew up in myself, there are varieties on what it means to believe in power----with some going for the extremes, whereas others are trying to walk in balance. For example, if considering the Gift of Tongues/speaking in tongues (which many Messianics do frequently), here's something that was said by one of the members of the forum:

As for tongues, I've always understood that they are for the unbeliever, not the believer, and they are actual worldly languages unknown to the speaker, known to the hearer (at least that's what is scriptural). I've personally had experience in that"

I speak in tongues - again, another gift I have been given but... I strongly disagree with those who interpret their own tongue because that is so open to abuse as I am sure all can see. I have never had an interpretation in KJV! I think if I did I would not trust it! No, it is not necessarily a worldly language, in fact I know of no-one who speaks in tongues that way, though I have heard it has happened - that too is easy to manipulate. As for words of prophecy. they must be tested to the extreme, but do bear in mind that G_d's time limits are not like ours!

I once prophesied to a couple who had spent all their money (£1000's) trying to have a baby by ivf but without any joy as the husband's sperm count was desparately low. We used to have, where I was then, an evening service with folk coming from around the area asking us to pray for them, but this young couple were congregation members. I laid hands on the wife and prayed and saw, in my mind's eye, sperm shapes swimming about in a bright red area and a great sense of G_d wanting to give them their desire - a child. I spoke the prophecy to them and they rejoiced, but after 9 months they left the fellowship accusing me of being a false prophet. About 5 or 6 months later, she was pregnant by normal means. Doctors were confounded as you can imagine. The baby was born perfectly healthy and the mother was going to call the baby some silly modern name so I went round and told them, in no uncertain terms, that G_d had answered the desire of their hearts and they should honour that by giving her a Biblical name - Elizabeth was chosen. They are now both strong believers.

I can also tell you that my youngest was so ill a few weeks after her birth that it was blue lights and sirens from Cambridge to Great Ormond Street, London. We were warned that it would a long time to carry out the emergency cardio-vascular surgery and for her to recover. It took just 8 days! Then I remembered that when we went to a church in the UK and stood at the front for communion the guy who came round with the wine (a well known UK Anglican evangelist) stopped in front of us and insisted on saying the A'aronic blessing over my wife's lump, complete with laying on of hands on the lump! I am sure that that was G_d sealing our baby's well being against the dreadful life threatening illness she had.

I mention all this, in brief, because I think there might be a danger that we are losing the work Yeshua does in this world because of those who do things their way, not his.

There are many similar stories I've often heard of. Nonetheless, for some, people may still question. I understand the issue of how intepretation on the practice of the gifts differs across the board---and that is reasonable, just as it is when it comes to the Charismatic movement/differences in views on what it means to practice the gifts. As said before, there are some MJ Fellowships that can also be Cessationists and very much anti-Charismatic in practice. And to be clear, when I say "Anti-Charismatic", I also am speaking in regards to what happens with things like poetry and dance and even things connected with the arts and prophetic artwork/designs ( Exodus 31:2-4 / Exodus 31 /Exodus 35:30-32 / Exodus 35 /Exodus 36:1-3/Exodus 36 ). Some of this was discussed more in-depth in the thread entitled "Before the Lord": Should Messianic Fellowships allow Dance/the Arts in Service?. For many had significant issue with ANY KIND Of dancing occurring in fellowships---and in talking to others who were in differing fellowships where the same went down, its hard for me to dismiss that. ...especially when seeing how the Messianic Fellowships I've grown up with were Charismatic in nature.

One of the older posters known as meslit (Marshal Beber) here who used to write frequently actually made an article on the issue:

In their words:
In the nineteenth century a theological revolution called "Dispensationalism" rightly outlined the "Biblical Historical Perspective", thereby giving mankind a clearer picture of how God has provided and continues to provide salvation to man throughout history. By acknowledgement of this perspective, an accord between Hebrew Old Covenant and New Covenant prophecy was forged, sweeping away many of the contradictions that divided Christian and Orthodox Jewish prophetic viewpoints. Dispensationalists became God's instrument of change in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, leading the way in promoting the support of the establishment of the state of Israel and bringing to light the prophetic signposts for the "End of this Age".

But when Dispensationalists took a theological stand against the excesses they found in contemporary "Charismatic" Christianity, they "Quenched the Holy Spirit" by denying the validity of most Charismatic Christian spiritual experiences. The result of this schism today is an eschatology shared by both Fundamentalist and Charismatic Protestant Denominations, but a sharp disagreement on the exercise of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The Dispensationalists claim they are protecting the kingdom of God from spiritual frauds and false theologies, while the Charismatics believe they have tapped into the "true baptism" of spiritual experience. Both sides have valid arguments as well as excesses. The Dispensationalists often times exude an overly dry manner in their presentation of scripture and worship, while the Charismatics often exude a "heart first" approach, which lends themselves susceptible to erroneous doctrine presented in an exuberant fashion.

Today most Messianic Jewish fellowships and congregations are disciples of one of the two movements mentioned. As prophetic events move us closer to Messiah Yeshua's (Christ Jesus) return, believers are reminded of the Hebrew prophet Joel's promise of "prophecy, dreams and visions" among the elect of Israel before the great and terrible "Day of the Lord".1

Dispensationalists believe these occurrences were only present in the times immediately following the "Day of Pentecost" and will be present during the times just preceding "Judgment Day", where Charismatics believe these expressions of the Spirit were present from the Day of Pentecost continuously to the present day.2

Nevertheless, as the great "Day of Judgment" approaches, both Fundamentalist and Charismatic Christians should have more to agree upon than disagree. When Dispensationalists accept they are living in the days just preceding the "Second Coming of Christ", they must also accept the very teachings they originally postulated. So as the "Day of the Lord" draws near, even Dispensationalists must accept those movements of the Spirit prophesied by Joel and recited by Peter on the Day of Pentecost.

I believe Messianic Jews (Hebrew Christians) and Gentile Christians from Fundamentalist, Charismatic and Reformed backgrounds will soon come to an understanding that events much greater than themselves will soon shape their understanding of the Lord's will in regards to commonly held beliefs and attitudes. We will all witness the same wonderful signs, tribulations and persecutions, whereby our love for the Lord Yeshua and one another will be tried and refined. It is then that Jewish and Gentile believers in Christ will finally be united in purpose and strength as we all await the "Coming of the Lord".

Good thoughts to consider, IMHO.

Rabbi Derek Leman also discussed the issue in-depth when it came to discussing what the Messianic movment is and how many Messianics aren't comfortable with Charismatic Messianic fellowships.....but suffice to say, it is interesting to see how much the Charismatic Movement and Messianic Judaism go together.

For more information, Peter Hocken tried to discuss some of those dynamics in one of his books, noting how many Messianics would prefer to not be listed as either connected to or apart of the "Charismatic" movement

What's interesting to consider is that some of the key leader within the Messianic Jewish movement (such as Dan Juster and others) have been well connected with the Charismatic movement/believing that believers need to have the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives just as the Lord Yeshua utilized it for His own ministry. Dan Juster is a frequent speaker in the Neo-Pentecostal movement known as IHOP (International House of Prayer) and has often celebrated that movement/its heart, seeing how focused they are on believing in the power of the Holy Spirit and not assuming that Gifts of the Spirit (miracles, healings, prophecy, etc) have ceased.

If wondering what the movement of IHOP is about in light of Messianic Rabbi Dan Juster connected to it, the basis of it is on Psalm 122:6-9 on praying for the peace of Jerusalem. I grew up working with this, as the House of Prayer on my side does "Israel Prayer" every Tuesday night, in connection with a larger movement know as the Israel Mandate, where people pray 24/7 for the peace of Jerusalem.

For more:

And it was always cool seeing the Charismatic and Messianic ideologies blend together when it came to the many ways that they did intercessory prayer there...especially as it concerned Prophetic Worship --which is often very spontaneous and beautiful due to how music is utilized to aid in prophesying/intercession just like it was for those in the OT ( 1 Chronicles 25:2-4 1 Chronicles 25:1-3 /2 Kings 3:14-16 / 2 Kings 3 )---that is something where prayer is often included in many Messianic circles...though for those Messianic circles who do so, I've noticed where they may be more Charismatic in nature anyhow. For they'll also love to do forms of dance before the Lord as a sign of prayer. If you recall Messianic Jews like Keith Green (as discussed here in #123 )---whose work actually procedded the Messianic Jewish Movement developed in the 60/70's, that may give more of a picture of what I mean.

Places such as International House of Prayer and leaders like Misty Edwards, Jason Upton, Eddy James and many others do the same...and I was very glad that Dan Juster was willing to connect with them/see the Spirit work through that venue. For many saying that we don't need the POWER of the Holy Spirit to do ministry via music and that IHOP has nothing to offer because of some of the Charismatic aspects that've occurred within it, I wonder how much they've really experienced anything. With Juster, he has taken alot of heat due to others disagreeing with his working with other Charismatic leaders in IHOP (like Mike Bickle or Lou Engle) whom people deemed as being either too over-board...or straight out "herectical" (in their view). But that has not stopped them from progressing. And for more on where he has actually spoken on such issues, one can go here, here

Others who have had similar experiences like Dan Juster would be people like Paul Wilbur. Wilbur is a well-known singer within the Messianic Jewish movement......and has done marvelous work in bringing others together in Messiah, be it Jew or Gentile. Of course, for many, its generally an issue for them due to Wilbur being too "charismatic."--or songs being "too contemporary." I know he and Sid Roth have interviewed before and I dig his style.... and they have done ministry together multiple times, with the dancing included on stage ( as seen here in Jews and Gentiles One in Messiah )....though others would still take issue with him. There was one time, I recall, where Wilbur performed for Benny Hinn's church and others took dramatic issue with him on the issue...and he has been listed on some "discernment" ministries as someone to be on guard against.

One was actually critiquing the wife of Paul Wilbur when she was at a conference with Sid Roth and there was an occurrence of what's called "Holy Laughter" in Charismatic circles...as seen here. The issue occurred at Morningstar Ministries....and to be clear, there’s another video from Kathie on YouTube, uploaded Nov 14 2008, that seems to be of the same event. You see Paul Wilbur (in salmon-colored shirt) next to his wife, and Kathie throws water at the congregation....with some dynamics similar to what occurred at Sid Roth's conference---as seen here. And though I have my own thoughts on what the Holy Laughter concept is about, I have seen others take issue with Paul Wilbur for his working with others that some take issue with.

It seems in many places that the moment discussion comes up about something being connected to the Charismatic movement, its automatically dismissed as being too wild or just overly emotional....and its sad, IMHO. Especially when considering how the Modern Messianic Jewish movement began

Peter Brock, in his book entitled Katz: Ben Israel, the Early Years from Flatbush to the Burning Bush, discussed the history of the Messianic Jewish movement that was started in the 60s-70's during the rise of Pentecostalism....and how many Jewish believers were actually birthed during that era of seeing the Pentecostal movement influence many.

Some may choose to define this as Apostolic Messianic Judaism--which is different on many levels than many other Messianic Charismatic groups. And for more on those within Apostolic Messianic Judaism, one can go either here or here for more. Those groups which are Apostolic Messianic Jewish are more so connected to Oneness Pentecostalism in that they don't believe in a Trinitarian view of the Lord--even though they still are about retaining Jewish idenity.

If you'd like some good reviews on the issue from a Messianic perspective:

That is just totally embarrassing, this is why I left what some uphold as 'Mainstream Messianic Judaism' and yet I'm vilified for it.

Go figure!
Are you speaking in reference to the video on Paul Wilbur's wife? Or the Charismatic and Pentecostal movements in general? And to be clear, if it was in reference to what Wilbur's wife was doing, it is not the case that all within either Pentecostal Movements or Charismatic movments support such. Growing up in it/seeing some of the same things depending on the location, it bothered me...and I'm glad for the others who sought to address it as best as they could....and describing the many ways in which excesses and hype are not reflective of what it means to be Charismatic. Others coming to mind are Messianics such as Alan Hirsh and his wife...very radical individuals who've had many beautiful things to say about the Pentecostal Movement/their experience in it as Jewish believers (as seen here and here and here). Seeing his perspectives have always blessed me, especially in light of how his brother leads a Messianic Jewish fellowship in Australia and he has seen the Holy Spirit come through in radical ways when reaching those who are often deemed "untouchable" by others (i.e. those trapped in same-sex relationshps, those battling drug addictions, prostitutes, etc)....and I appreciate his willingness to addresses the aspects of expericing the Holy Spirit's power in constructive ways and contrasting that with how it can be tainted depending on the individual's actions. And for others who had much wisdom on the subject:
With Paul Wilbur, even for those disagreeing, its interesting that his Messianic musical ministry is still utilized by many of the same people who'd disagree with excesses done in the name of the Spirit---showing that they've not disconnected fully from others on all points.

We need power, if we have a commission. If we have an office, such as pastor or evangelist, or teacher. It is not possible to merely to receive Christ, and hear the inner witness, and serve.

Jesus' blood has the power to justify, and clean the heart. Charisma, anointing has power, dunamis, to effect successful work in ministry. The oil of the Holy Spirit is poured on a person. As in Luke ch 4. Power and commission.

When you are for God enough, or even love Him, you want souls, and more souls knowing Him, and then you want to be part of or have a commission, and serve the lost, or the trainees.

We can't serve without power, we need it. And want it when we are for God.

I'd add to what you're saying by noting that to seek power as an end in/of itself would never be the heart of the Lord. For He has given us power to do the job he calls us to do--but to simply want the power because we desire it would actually destory rather than build up. It'd be akin to one knowing the Lord empowers us to do miracles...and yet, they're often demanding God does a miracle before anyone not saved---and yet, they never stop to remember that Jesus walked in ALL of the gifts of the Spirit....but only did what He saw his father doing. He may've done the miraculous one day in feeding thousands with fish (John 6, Matthew 14, etc)---but by no means did he make it out as if it had to happen everytime on demand. And if the Father felt differently, He'd go with that. The gifts for doing things were given..but that had to be used under authority/knowing the times

Not quite. Much of modern Judaism is made up of traditions adopted after the Babylonian exile and up to the middle ages.
To me there is a BIG difference between biblical Judaism and rabbinical Judaism which you are correct in saying that the traditions manifested from Babylonian times.
