Of cause it is okay for Christian to garden? What makes you think it is not okay for christians to garden? Why did God plant tree and plants for us to enjoy if He did not want us to spend time enjoying the plants and tasty fruits and vegetables that our own garden can produce? Why would God want us to eat chemical laden food & gentically modified food from the local shops when you can buy and plant your own fresh produce? I think God would love us to be outdoors more enjoying his beautiful creations, and the others animals that will be attracted from our home gardens!

I'm worried that this sort of thing is addicting and can lead people astray, and leave them caring more about their yards, then about God.

Kidding right?:D Thanks I needed to laugh-

This sums up my points. :) My Grandparents and great grandfather were all farmers, and they balanced farming with spending time with God. I can't really see how gardening can be a bad thing (whether it's flowers or food).

If I were to make an argument against gardening it would center on CAin and Able and the scarifices they provided and how God viewed those sacrifices.

I probably could make a decent argument, but it would only hold water with a few small splinter sects. The vast majority of Christianity feels Jesys fulfilled the scarificial requirements and that burnt offerings and the like are no l;onger wanted or needed.

I'm horrified at what God would think of my sad garden.

Paul told us to eph.4:28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth Not only do we see a cure here for thieving, but also a lesson in benevolence all in one sentence!! I think one of the problems with people today is they don't know how to work with their hands. Idle hands is the devil's workshop. We are "tenders", it's our original purpose to tend to the earth. We're pretty good at it when we're not destroying it. I have an Uncle who is 97 years old and gets pictures of his tomatoes in the newspaper almost every year. It's a good & healthy enterprise. Go for it.

"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it unto the Lord and not to man; from hence comes your reward" -Col 3.23-24

As long as what you're doing does not violate scripture, or the leading of the Holy Spirit, you are free to do it. Only watch your motivations, and do it unto the Lord, and you will receive spiritual as well as material blessings.

God created nature so that it doesn't need us to grow.
Just one thing came to mind here. If all farmers and all people working on farms in the whole world stopped farming right now, do you think people would start starving to death? (I do.)

Do you think the cost of carrots and lettuce and peas and corn and apples and beans and oranges and broccoli and spinach and etc etc etc would remain the same? Go down? Or you think the cost of those items would rise exponentially to a price that most people could no longer afford vegetables?

I think you need to visit some farms run by Christians and ask them if everyone stopped working on that farm right now, what would happen to the place. Would a bountiful harvest occur without the aid of man? Or would the crop be a complete failure?

Do you think it's okay for Christians to garden? I know people (older ones mostly) who spend hours upon hours on their gardens. I'm worried that this sort of thing is addicting and can lead people astray, and leave them caring more about their yards, then about God.

Maybe there is a very good reason for people to spend time doing gardening. Perhaps they are lonely, feel they have nothing else and what to occupy this with something they enjoy, or perhaps they feel it brings them closer to God.

No one can say that another person cares more about a hobby than God - only they know and God they know that.

I have hobbies that I spend a lot of time on, but in no way that does mean that care about them more than God.

The good thing about working in a garden, it is quiete and peaceful, no distractions. It is a perfect time for reflection upon God and all the blessings that he has given us. When I weed my garden, I am not thinking..."oh, there is a weed, pull it, there is another, pull it." Usually I am going through the motions and thinking and reflecting on something. Sometimes I think about my to do list, or think about what fun thing I will do with my son later, or about what I read in the bible that morning. Many times I just comune with the lord.

Much better than watching TV.

Were you concerned for these same people 20 years ago that they were spending hours a day at work?
Gardenning is fantastic exercise for old people. So long as they are taking care of themselves and are remaining social, what a fantastic life that would be!
[bible]Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:[/bible]

God created nature so that it doesn't need us to grow. With the exception of Him telling us to tend and till the Garden of Eden, of course! But it seems boastful to try and create one of our own. And spend sooo much time and money on it. Just a thought...
The lillies themselves don't toil. But, if WE want to put lillies over HERE, then we need to toil to make that happen. But we don't cobble the plant together molecule by molecule...
