Kind of like how people will say god is evil (as they understand his character/actions) but I don't think anyone has ever said 'God is evil, there for god does not exist' Unless they were specifically talking about an omnibenevolent god.

but I've lost track of the number of atheists and anti-theists I've heard saying if God was proven to exist they still wouldn't believe in him.

For instance notice that famous Dawking. In one dispute he said that because God wants us to love him he is therefore our child! Another good example is the theodice problem.
