Quenching and Grieving the Holy Spirit are two things brought about by disobedience in the life of a believer.

I Thessalonians 5:19: "Quench not the Spirit."

Quenching is a negative action that is the result of NOT doing what God wants us to do. Quenching stops things. And example is found in:

Ephesians 6:16: "Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked."

Hebrews 11:34: "Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens."

Grieving, however, is a positive action. That is when we do something God does not want us to do. I doubt if there is a need to post Scriptures on that.

However it is important to remember there are consequences for these sins, and if we continue these sins for an extended period of time we will suffer those consequences, just as we will suffer cancer and heart disease and/or other consequences if we continue smoking for extended periods of time. These then become a "Sin unto death"

Some examples of those consequences:

I Corinthians 11:30: "For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep."

Acts 5:1 ¶ But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

I Corinthians 5:5: "To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus."

Example of the difference:

If you are with a friend or someone else you know is unsaved and the Spirit wants you to witness to this person but you refuse and keep quiet, you have Quenchd the Holy Spirit. On the other hand, if you, in fact,
participate in non-Christian conversation with this person, like swapping dirty jokes or such, you have Grieved the Holy Spirit!

Awesome post Gerry! Something God has been working on with me lately is following His Spirit more closely and doing things in His time instead of my own. Most of the time I listen and act, but I have to admit there have been a few times I've been a bit resistant. Interesting thing is even If I do start to resist, His Spirit pushes me all the harder until I do what's expected of me. I find no peace in a situation until I follow through with whatever it is His Spirit has asked me to do.

Another example of Quenching the Spirit would be not to correct/rebuke a brother or sister in Christ should the Spirit direct you to do so.

Exactly right! As Christians we tend to do things in reverse. If a brother/sister legitimately needs correcting/rebuking we tend to Quench the Spirit by not doing it! But at times when a brother/sister does NOT need rebuking, we with our wrong attitude tend to do it anyway, thereby grieving the Holy Spirit, byt doing what He did not want us to do.

We need to pray seriously and get these things right and save ourselves much trouble.
