Let me first say that it is a joy to see so many of you that I have not seen in some time. It's a shame that you should be seen in these circumstances, and not in happier ones.
On Saturday I saw Michelina in the ICU. There is a mixture of good and bad news.
First, it would seem that in the language of comas, she has passed from a vegetative state to a minimally conscious state. This is good news. She recognizes her sister and her nephew, will squeeze hands, and her eyes when she is not sleeping are wide open and occasionally will focus on particular individuals. Additionally, she has really good color.
However, she has contracted pneumonia, and she has for several decades already had a compromised respiratory system due to a lack of cilia in the lungs. So this is a fragile moment as she receives massive amounts of antibiotics to counter the infection. Her ventilator when I checked was giving her an upped amount of oxygen to counter the effect of fluid in her lungs.
The doctors are in a difficult place, because the process to clear her lungs of fluids is stressful to the heart. When they began to clear the lungs, her blood pressure plummeted. So both the heart and the lungs are half taken care of, as it were. Medically it's a balancing act.
On the whole I would say that Michelina is stable and the mental aspect is encouraging, but she still has a long way to go, and a lot can go wrong.
Michelina has smiled and also shown signs of pain when she coughs.
When I saw her, I prayed Daytime Prayer with her and used the miraculous oil from the St. Anne de Beaupré Shrine on her. A sister visits her with relics as well. She has also received Anointing from a Priest.
I told her that all of us here were praying for her, some of you by name as you requested me to do.
Please kindly also pray for Michelina's family as you remember her.
I don't think I will be up her way again in a bit (I've used four days off already to go up her way), but I will continue to receive word from the family and I will keep you all updated.
God Bless you!
