Bill Nye Boo’d In Texas For Saying The Moon Reflects The Sun [UPDATED] « Johnny

Bill Nye, the harmless children’s edu-tainer known as “The Science Guy,” managed to offend a select group of adults in Waco, Texas at a presentation, when he suggested that the moon does not emit light, but instead reflects the light of the sun.

As even most elementary-school graduates know, the moon reflects the light of the sun but produces no light of its own.

But don’t tell that to the good people of Waco, who were “visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence,” according to the Waco Tribune.

Nye was in town to participate in McLennan Community College’s Distinguished Lecture Series. He gave two lectures on such unfunny and adult topics as global warming, Mars exploration, and energy consumption.

But nothing got people as riled as when he brought up Genesis 1:16, which reads: “God made two great lights — the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.”

The lesser light, he pointed out, is not a light at all, but only a reflector.

At this point, several people in the audience stormed out in fury. One woman yelled “We believe in God!” and left with three children, thus ensuring that people across America would read about the incident and conclude that Waco is as nutty as they’d always suspected.

Creationists. Gotta love 'em. *sigh*

Isn't a reflected light still a light?

Didn't Christ tell his followers that they were to be a light to the world? But isn't their light accurately described as a reflection of Christ?

I love it when these loons show they not only get physics wrong, they also fail theology.

Yeah. Shame that people can be this ignorant though

I wonder, is this ignorance growing or shrinking?

How do you explain the fact that creationists also say the moon reflects the light of the sun?

FYI, Bill is actually only half correct. The solar wind particles that strike the moon also create light, not all of the light is due to photon reflection. Furthermore, the moon is not at an absolute zero temperature, so it does in fact radiate photons at some wavelength related to it's surface temperatures. Its heat does in fact come from the sun, but the particles on the surface release that heat as photons. Such photons are emitted from materials that are actually on the surface.
A soft X-ray image of the Moon

Even the dark side of the moon emits x-rays.

Would the moon be a source of light without the sun? Did Christ actually glow? Did his followers have different phases of light depending on their location with respect to Christ? Is the moon made of cheese?

Nobody has to because it doesn't at all detract from the absolute stupidity of these particular morons.

If Bill Nye said this:
The lesser light, he pointed out, is not a light at all, but only a reflector.
I don't blame them for walking out.

In that vein, the sun isn't a light, either -- neither is a candle.

And for the record, my wife and I would have probably walked out before that.

Can't he quote a real Bible?

You mean atheist morons like Bill Nye who say that Genesis is contradicted by the the fact that the moon reflects the light of the sun?

Why do you deny atheist morons exist? Bill Nye is a fantastic guy says that contradictions of Genesis by the fact the the sun emits a reflective light for a lesser moon. Even Pythagoras and Pee Wee Herman know this.

Trying to make sense of this ... sentence ... it looks like you just said the sun emits reflective light?

Is that correct?
