Yeshua in the Old Testament

Recently I have had some conversations with people who have questioned Yeshua in the old testament.. Some have down right rejected any concept of Yeshua in the Old Testament and called it a kind of allegorical reading of the old testament.. Others do believe he was there but not fully known. Others do not believe that deity of Christ, Trinity, or the sacrificial work of the cross were present.. When I have stated that Yeshua was fully known by Old Testament believers I have been said to be "jesting"... All of these people claimed the name of Christian. I found this to be quite shocking and so I had started to prepare my listing...

If you want Yeshua's sacrificial work of the cross you only need to go to Psalm 22 which are the very words of the Messiah on the cross while dying..

The following will be a comprehensive list of Yeshua in the Old Testament that I have been working on..

The name of Yeshua is found in Psalms 3:8; 9:14; 13:5; 14:7; 20:5; 21:1, 5; 35:9; 38:22; 40:10, 16; 50:23; 51:14; 53:6; 62:1, 2, 6; 68:19; 69:29; 70:4; 71:15; 74:12; 78:22; 88:1; 89:26; 91:16; 96:2; 98:2, 3; 106:4; 116:13; 118:14, 15, 21; 119:41, 81, 123, 155, 166, 174; 140:7; 144:10; 149:4.

Something that struck me as I was researching Psalm 89 is that this is the restatement of the Davidic covenant which clearly speaks of Yeshua and it also contains both his name (translated as “salvation”) and his title “Messiah” fully four times.

The following list will contain the Old Testament references followed by a New Testament references

Yeshua in the Book of Psalms

Many of the psalms specifically anticipate the life and ministry of Yeshua the Messiah, the One who came centuries later as Israel’s promised Messiah (“anointed one”). Like the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) in the New Testament, Psalms
gives several perspectives on the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Yeshua, the King (portrayed in Matthew)
Psalm Chapter 2 – Christ as King of the nations
Psalm Chapter 18 – Christ is Protector and Deliverer
Psalm Chapter 20 – Christ provides salvation
Psalm Chapter 21 – Christ is given glory by God
Psalm Chapter 24 – Christ is King of Glory
Psalm Chapter 47 – Christ rules in His kingdom
Psalm Chapter 110 – Christ is King-Priest
Psalm Chapter 132 – Christ is enthroned

Yeshua, the Servant (portrayed in Mark)
Psalm Chapter 17 – Christ is Intercessor
Psalm Chapter 17 & 22 – Christ is dying Savior
Psalm Chapter 17 & 23 – Christ is Shepherd
Psalm Chapter 17 & 40 – Christ is obedient unto death
Psalm Chapter 17 & 41 – Christ is betrayed by a close friend
Psalm Chapter 17 & 69 – Chris is hated without cause
Psalm Chapter 17 & 109 – Christ loves those who reject Him

Yeshua, the Son of Man (portrayed in Luke)
Psalm Chapter 17 & 8 – Christ is made a little lower than angels
Psalm Chapter 17 & 16 – Christ’s resurrection is promised
Psalm Chapter 17 & 40 – Christ’s resurrection is realized

Yeshua, the Son of God (portrayed in John)
Psalm Chapter 17 & 19 – Christ is Creator
Psalm Chapter 17 & 102 – Christ is eternal
Psalm Chapter 17 & 118 – Christ is the Chief Cornerstone

Here are some of the specific prophecies about Yeshua in the Book of Psalms:

Yeshua portrait by the different books of the Old Testament...

In Genesis, Yeshua is the seed of woman who will bruise the head of the serpent. We see Melchizedek the King of Righteousness and Yeshua is our High Priest "on the order of Melchizedek."

In Exodus, The lamb slain whose blood was on the doorposts of the Israelites is a precursor to Yeshua, the Lamb of God.

In Leviticus, the sacrifices and offerings are symbolic of the sacrifice of Yeshua .

In Numbers, the rock and the manna are symbolic of Yeshua, the Bread of Life and the Rock of our salvation.

In Deuteronomy we see the Prophet who is to come who is "like unto Moses".

We see the Captain of the Lord's Hosts in Joshua, an Old Testament manifestation of Yeshua.

In Judges we have the Angel of the LORD who appeared to Manoah and his wife. We see the many judges who were saviors to Israel.

Ruth shows us the kinsman-redeemer. Yeshua is our Kinsman-Redeemer.

The books of Samuel reveal David, the prince and the king. Yeshua will sit upon the throne of David. Yeshua is the Root and offspring of Jesse.

The books of Kings show us the earthly kings and their shortfalls. Yeshua will be King of kings and Lord of lords. Yeshua is He who is "greater than Solomon" and "greater than the Temple."

Chronicles shows Yeshua as "the King's son" rescued from the dead and hidden in the House of the LORD to be manifested in due time. This was good king Joash. Read the story in 2 Chronicles 22-23.

In Ezra, Yeshua is the "nail in the holy place."

Nehemiah speaks of the "bread from Heaven" and the water out of the Rock." Both typify Yeshua.

The seed of woman (through whom Yeshua would come) is preserved in Esther (the Jews were saved by her intervention). The name of the LORD is spelled out in four acrostics in Esther.

Job talks about his redeemer in 19:25 "For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:"

Yeshua is seen throughout the Psalms. Please see previous section on Yeshua in the Psalms.

Proverbs tell us about the Wisdom of God, who is Yeshua.

Ecclesiastes shows Yeshua as the "one man in a thousand" among the emptiness of life under the sun.

Song of Songs portrays Yeshua. He is shown as the faithful Shepherd, and the Bridegroom.

Isaiah tells of the Suffering Servant who is Yeshua who was "wounded for our transgressions," and "bruised for our iniquities." Isaiah said that "with his stripes we are healed."

Jeremiah reveals the Righteous Branch.

Ezekiel shows Yeshua as the True Shepherd, the Prince, and the Son of Man.

In Daniel, Yeshua is Messiah the Prince, who is "cut off."

Hosea is Yeshua' namesake, for Hoseah means Yehovah's Savior just as Yeshua does.

Joel speaks of Israel's deliverer.

Amos speaks of raising the tabernacle of David. Yeshua came to earth and tabernacled among us. See John 1:14, where the word "dwelt" actually means "tabernacled".

Obadiah tells us of the Deliverer on Mount Zion.

Jonah, mentioned above, is the sign Yeshua would give the world (three days and nights in the belly of a fish).

Micah speaks of the King passing before them.

Nahum tells us of the Stronghold in Trouble.

Habakkuk talks about the Holy One whose glory covers the sky.

In Zephaniah we are told of the Mighty God in the midst of Zion.

Haggai calls Yeshua the "desire of all nations."

Zechariah speaks of "the Branch".

Malachi calls Him the Sun of Righteousness.

Thanks MikhaelDavide for the good work!:)

And I agree with you!:) another thing that I want to make is Moses and Jesus! :)

Before I continue, I will warning you for my english - I am pretty bad to spell in english - so it is okey for you to correcting me if I spell in a wrong way!:)
Now I will begin!:)

Moses goes to Egypt and in the same way Jesus goes to Jerusalem. The blood of the lamb saves Israel from death and the slavery in Egypt. The lamb of God saves the whole world from our sin and death. Israel began to eat the fleash/meat from the lamb and we shall eat and drink Jesus fleash and blood.

Moses and Israel comes to the red sea and God saved them through the water, In the same way he is saving us through the water when we gets baptized. When Moses and Israel went through the desert - God was with them - and he walked with them. In the same way I believe that God our Father walking with us - today - through Jesus Christ!

So this historical story when Moses called Israel out of Egypt - Jesus are calling us out of the world. To Our heavenly hometown - Jerusalem!

I believe that God has teaching me this - what do you believe in this?

I hope that you all can understand me - I im so sorry for my englishs spelling! But I hope that you all understand!:)

God bless you all!

Savedbygrace,

What you are trying to say is what is called Redemptive history theology... and I agree..

Egypt represents bondage to sin... God through Moses saves His people from Egypt.. Moses is a Christ figure.. Israel begins to eat of that Covenantal sacrificial meal from the lamb which represents the body and blood of Christ just as we also eat of a Covenantal sacrificial meal through the Passover meal and Lord Supper meal. Israel's time in the wilderness is a time of testing (Psalm 95) just as now before our glorification we are being tested by faith and obedience.. This is our time in the wilderness.

The types of Baptisms such as the Red Sea and Noah's Ark Baptism are types of our New Covenant Baptism (1 Cor. 10 and 1 Peter) and represents the same thing, God saving His people by the washing of His blood for the remission of sin.

So I do agree with you... All that was done was done for our eyes and represents actual realities for us... That is the essence of redemptive history...

I would also point out that Christ was the one who gave the law to moses as the angel of the Lord in the burning bush on Mount Sinai...

Michael

Thanks yedida for your comforting post!:)

This is one thing that really strengthens me in my Faith in Christ Jesus. When I study the holy scriptures and have faith that the Holy Spirit is with me and teaching me - and when I then see that other people agree and has come to the same conclusion. Then I can be more confident that the Holy Spirit is teaching me!:)

What he did was ripping a whole lot of texts which have no bearing on the messiah whatsoever and present them as "messianic prophecies".

But if you go about like that, then you can turn everybody you want into the messiah, whether that is Barak Obama, Napeleon Bonaparte, or the rooster of Moshe:

My name is Moshe and I am a Chassidic Jew who has, from my youth, learned the words of our Holy Prophets, and has been puzzled by their meaning.
Then, on the day before Yom Kippur, I contemplated the solemnity of the day and was made aware of the amazing meaning of G-d's words. I recognized the fulfillment of 42 Messianic prophecies of the Tenach, and they changed my life forever.

1. Early in the morning I went to get my rooster to fulfill the ancient custom. There in the light I looked into his eyes and saw fulfilled the words, 'I am the rooster* who has seen affliction.' (Lam. 3:1)

2. I took him and swung him around my head as the verse says, 'And he circled his head**.' (Lam 3:5)

3. I moved my hands as I swirled him, as it says, 'Only against me did he turn his hand.' (Lam 3:3)

4. With this he leaped from my hand and started to run. As it says, 'They have run away without seeing good.' (Job 9:25)

5. I cried a short pray to HaShem as it says, 'My words I say out of the bitterness of my soul.' (Job 10:1)

6. He ran from me, fulfilling the verse, 'To me they showed their back and not their face.' (Jer. 32:33)

7/8. I borrowed a cane from a man near me so as to catch him with the rounded edge, as the verse says, 'And Moshe took the stick.' (Ex. 4:20, Num 20:8)

9/10. I tried to catch him with the hook, but only the blows of the cane hit his back as it says, 'Afflicted by the rod of his anger.' (Lam. 3:1 and it also says, 'I struck you with the blows of an enemy.' (Jer. 30:12)

11. He turned to me and I got him right on the cheek fulfilling the verse, 'I have offered my cheek to the one who strikes me.' (Lam. 3:30)

12. He ran from me into a dark corner and I followed after him, as the verse says, 'He has led me and driven me into the darkness and not light.'
(Lam. 3:2)

13. I had him there in the corner as it says; 'All her pursuers overtook her in the small place.' (Lam. 1:3)

14. He stood there silent, as he had been to this time in fulfillment of the words of the prophet, 'He was persecuted and afflicted, be he did not open his mouth.' (Is. 53:7)

15. In that corner there was just nowhere for him to hide from me as the verse says, 'Can a person hide in a concealed place, and I should not see him?' (Jer. 23:25)

16. He was now trapped as the verse says, 'He has walled me in so I cannot escape.' (Lam. 3:7)

17. In his eyes I could see him praying silently to HaShem, 'My G-d my G-d why have you forsaken me?' (Psalm 22:1)

18. Clearly it was fulfilled for him, 'The mighty ones of Bashan encircle me.' (Psalm 22:13)

19. I grabbed him and he started to call out to HaShem.
As the verse says, 'My G-d, I call to you by day and you do not answer and by night and there is no respite.' (Psalm 22:3)

20. But there was no answer as it says, 'Though I would scream out and plead he shut out my prayer.' (Lam. 3:8)

21. It was clearly the end. I grabbed him and took my place in the line waiting to give my rooster to the shochet (ritual slaughterer.) He was silent, 'Like a sheep being led to the slaughter or a ewe to her sharers he did not open his mouth.' (Is. 53:7)

22. The shochet took him by the neck as it says; 'He grasped me by the neck.' (Job 16:12)

23. With that he screamed out, 'Be not far from me because distress is near and there is none to help me.' (Psalm 22:12)

24. He also said, 'Save my soul from the sword.' (Psalm 22:21)

25. He slaughtered him fulfilling 'He was removed from the living land.' (Is. 53:8)

26. He let the blood fall on the floor, as it says, 'I am poured out like water.' (Psalm 22:15)

27. I took the dead chicken and gazed at it as the prophet says, 'They have looked upon me whom they have pierced.' (Zech 12:10)

28/29. I took it to be made kosher. We separated it into pieces snapping it's bones as the verses say, 'All my bones became disjointed.' (Psalm 22:15) 'He has broken my bones.' (Lam 3:4)

30. Then I took him home to cook. My wife removed the skin as it says, 'He has worn away my flesh and skin.' (Lam. 3:4)

31. She placed him in a pot with water, as it says, 'For the waters have reached unto my soul.' (Psalm 69:2)

32. She added many spices as it says, 'And she gave ...many spices.' (1 Kings 10:10)

33. She covered up the pot so it could cook as it says; 'He has placed me in darkness.' (Lam 3:6)

34. The smell of it filled the room as it says, 'That the spices may flow out.' (Song 4:16)

35. After that it was served on the table and we gazed upon it as the verse says, 'I count my bones and they gaze and look upon me.' (Psalm 22:18)

36. He was divided among the members of my family, as it says, 'Therefore I will divide him among the many.' (Is. 53:12)

37/38. We rejoiced and sang as we ate him, as it says, 'I have become a thing of laughter for my people, they sing all day long.' (Lam. 3:14) 'In him our hearts were joyful.' (Psalm 33:21)

39/40/41. After which we were full and praised G-d as it says, 'You shall eat and be satisfied and praise HaShem your G-d.' (Deut. 6:11,8:10,11:15).

42. We truly saw the goodness of G-d as it say, 'You should taste and see that HaShem is good.' (Psalm 34:9)

There were many more messianic prophecies that I could have added that applied to my messianic rooster. Many more he will fulfill when he comes back.

In all seriousness the above example is no different then the lists claiming 200/300/400 prophecies fulfilled by Jesus. They claim the odds against a single person fulfilling them are astronomical. Or of their claims that passages like Psalms 22, or Isaiah 53 are about their messiah/god. Consider this well when you see or hear the claims made by missionaries or just simple Christians who you may meet. If not there may be a prophecy that does really apply: 'They are a people bereft of council and they don't have understanding.'

* In Hebrew the word 'gever' means both 'man' and 'rooster'berew
** In Hebrew the word is resh aleph shin, which can be read as 'rosh' head'

You have found your way into the Messianic congregational forum. You are welcome to stay and fellowship but be it known that we (the majority anyway) accept Yeshua as Hashem's promised Branch, His Messiah.

You might call it ripping text but I take the words of the Messiah Himself in Luke 24:44 which states "These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me."

Yeshua Himself claimed the whole of the Old Testament was about Him and also stated that the entire Psalms were about Him and was written concerning Him.. And not concerning your rooster....

Enough said...

Yedida -
This is prime example of a counter (anti) missionary. They are not worth arguing with or even worthy of our fellowship.

I hate to be rude, and thought maybe I'd give the benefit of the doubt....(I get taken every time!!!) Oh well, live and learn.

OH I totally didn't mean that in response to you at all, Yedida. I'm sorry for any confusion.

Two misunderstandings, lol. I was referring to the first of your signatures about the Messies giving it all up and running away when everyone's against Israel. I got the man's name a bit wrong. I didn't take anything you said personally and I didn't really take that quote personally either (just thought I should respond to it).
