Yes I know it is early but I love Christmas/Advent Carols. What are some of your favorites?

I absolutely LOVE Christmas songs! I have a pretty decent CD collection of Christmas music. Among my favorites are:

"Mary Did You Know" by Kathy Mattea
"Emmanuel" by Kathy Mattea
"Strange Way To Save The World" by 4Him
"Emmanuel" by Michael W. Smith
"Deck the Halls" by SheDaisy
"Hark the Herald Angels Sing/Carol of the Bells" by SheDaisy
"Christmas Guest" by Johnny Cash
"Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth" by Bing Crosby & David Bowie

ANY version of "Oh Holy Night" and "Silent Night"

"It Was a Starry Night" (This song I had never heard before Christmas of 2004; I was asked to sing it in a duet with my friend K. I LOVE singing with K. I remember that we had a choral backing, and I was 7 months pregnant...and (if I may say so) I never felt in better voice, and K and I blended sweetly. I just fell in love with the song. At about the same time I received an offer for a free CD of Christmas music...no brainer! On the disc, the very last track: "It Was a Starry Night"!)

Last but not least: "Shiny Christmas" by...me!

Just as a common observation, it seems even most evangelical churches play only Christmas music, beginning with Thanksgiving. So, I like the Advent hymns and atmosphere.

Advent Hymns

Favorite Advent Hymns:

Comfort, Comfort, Ye My People (Isaiah 40:1-8)
Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates (Psalm 24)
Oh, Come, Oh, Come, Emmanuel (all seven stanzas) (Isaiah 59:29)
On Jordan's Bank the Baptist's Cry (Isaiah 40:3; Matthew 3:3)
Hark the Glad Sound! The Savior Comes (Isaiah 61:1-2; Luke 4:18)
The Advent of Our King (Zechariah 9:9)
Watchman, Tell Us of the Night (Isaiah 21:11)

Other Advent hymns I like

Behold, Branch is Growing (Isaiah 11:1-2)
Come, Thou Precious Ransom, Come (Matthew 21:5)
Jesus Came, the Heavens Adoring (Zechariah 9:9)
O Lord, How Shall I Meet Thee (Matthew 21:1-9)
Hark, a Thrilling Voice Is Sounding (Romans 13:11)
Hosanna to the Living Lord (Matthew 21:9)

Christmas Hymns

Now Sing We, Now Rejoice (Luke 2:1-14 - perhaps my favorite of all)
From Heaven Above to Earth I Come (all 15 stanzas) (Luke 2:1-18)
Angels from the Realms of Glory (Luke 2)
Angels We Have Heard on High (Luke 2)
Joy to the World (Luke 2:10; Psalm 98)
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (Luke 2:14)
Savior of the Nations, Come (John 1:14) - written by Ambrose prior to AD 397
Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful (Luke 2:15)
To Shepherds as They Watched by Night (Luke 2:10-11)
To People That in Darkness Sat (Isaiah 9:2; Matthew 4:16)
Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht (Luke 2:8)
O Little Town of Bethlehem (Micah 5:2)

A Great and Mighty Wonder (1 Timothy 3:16)
Once in Royal David's City (Luke 2)
Rejoice, Rejoice, This Happy Morn (Luke 2:11)
Let Us All with Gladsome Voice (2 Corinthians 8:9)
Now Are the Days Fulfilled (Colossians 4:4)
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

And of course, I could go on... :)

But, just the Scriptural texts that form the basis and core stanzas of these hymns provides a great witness opportunity.

Probably more than you asked for!

Blessings as you move forward to celebrating our Savior's first coming, and await with eagerness his second coming.

LONG LIST:

From Heaven Above to Earth I Come
Savior of the Nations Come
O Come O Come Emmanuel
Prepare the Royal Highway
Blessed Be the God of Israel
Canticle of the Turning
Comfort, Comfort now my People
Lift up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates
The King shall Come
Joy to the World
Hark the Herold Angels Sing
Sussex Carol
Away in a Manger
Silent Night
O Come All Ye Faithful
Angels We Have Heard on High
What Child is This
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

As you can see I love this time of the year. There are a few secular ones I like too. There was one I seem to remember (can't remember the name) but I think it had to do with a shoe shop. Also one I hear in the stores and never in church "Hark now hear the angel sing a King is born today" "Drummer Boy" "Winter Wonderland" "I'll be home for Christmas" "Frosty the Snowman" and of course when Donald Duck sings "Jingle Bells" and the Chipmunks sing just about anything

As to the opposite:
In church I really am not that joyful over "Creator of the Stars of Night" "The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came" "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear"

And in the secular realm: I'm not big on Santa Coming to Town or Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer.
But the number one song I loath is that Paul McCartney "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time" the song is beyond annoying for me. So much so that I will often leave a store if it is playing in the background I simply cannot stand that song...

"The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came"
"Lo How a Rose E're Blooming"
"O Come, O Come Emanuel"
"Silent Night"
"O Holy Night" (ANY version, but ESPECIALLY josh groban's version)
"Coventry Carol"
"What Child is This"
"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"

(i know there's more....have to think about it)

secular songs:

"Pretty Paper" (esp. Randy Travis' version)
"Feliz Navidad" (i don't know why this song just makes me SO HAPPY!!)
"Mary Did You Know"
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"

"Mary Did You Know" by Kathy Mattea

Have you heard Michael Crawford's version? For my money, it's the best out there.

My favorites, other than the above song, are:
Silent Night
O Holy Night
Away in a Manger
What Child Is This (I love the TSO's "version" of this... it's a different song to the same music, then morphs into something completely different, but it's very powerful when listened to after reading the story it goes with).
Strange Way to Save the World -MichaelCrawford and Twila Paris
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Carol of the Bells
Christmas Eve Sarejevo/12-24 (because it incorporates the two previous songs and is, well... TSO...)
Old City Bar
Joy to the World
The First Noel

That's just off the top of my head.

I've always loved Christmas music as well. Subscribing to this thread for reference. I enjoy Celine Dion's version of Holy Night, even if sometimes it gets a bit too high pitched. It's just a beautiful version. I also love Little Drummer Boy, O Come O Come Emmanuel, What Child is This, and I'm sure there's many I'm not thinking of.

I think, on this, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

I guess so! Oh well, I suppose it'll just fall under A-C-A, Advent-Christmas-Adiaphora! :)
