And anothing thing- most of these torrents and illegal stuff come with viruses and malware so the stealing will have the consequences as your computer gets infected and slower.
That lie was false 8 years ago, and it's just as false today. A distribution network protocol cannot do that, end of story. Not to mention the point that by no means is it 'most', because viruses/malware can only come in through certain avenues, and most p2p traffic are not those avenues.

It doesn't preclude a user from infecting themselves with junk because of their own negligence and downloading a filetype that's a virus vector (mp3 and various video filetypes are not vectors; executables and some image formats are, though), but it is not the network that does it, and if you use the well-known clients, they don't deposit malware on you either.

I'm not condoning the illegal uses of a piece of software, but propagandistic FUD is another story.

On a side note, what was so important about this thread being necroposted on? There's another topic just like this in Singles from within the last week.

I went through a phase of what the OP is describing. I trashed games and all kinds of things that I had downloaded, feeling guilty as a new Christian. I thought that it was important. I thought that my ethical stand was honorable, and a big step toward improving my relationship with God. At some point I grew up and faced the real world.

If you want to talk about ethics, I'll talk about the cruel realities of economics which has made software piracy possible: The massive forces which sponsor human progress and the enormous toll which they exert upon economies, societies, and individuals. If the biggest ethical struggle which you are forced to face is where to download your videos and music, savor the moment.

Piracy is theft by theory, but it is not a capital theft. Software piracy does not involve taking anything. It only involves copying. It is not even a theft of intellectual property, because again, data is not taken, but copied. It can be theft from an ethical standpoint, but that is based on the assumption that you are downloading things which you would otherwise buy. If an individual downloads a file which would never have been purchased otherwise, that case of piracy has no economic impact.

The matters of legality move us toward the question of those principles by which we live, make money, and strive to succeed in society. Make your own choice. Try to live right as possible; but open your eyes to the bigger problems in the world and the economy at large. In the broader scope of things, media companies are still making large profits, and this issue has very little impact upon global economics.

My title is the only way you will see these words together in a single sentence. I rededicated my life to Christ but it is different this time. I am solely living for Him and ridding my life of all things that were leeches (that literally sucked away at ever establishing a relationship with God **video games, secular music, movies**). Using torrents and limewire to download torrents is obviously stealing but living in this modern world with this so much availability and convenience it is tempting to use these including torrents to download any song or movie you want for free. This is exactly it -sin is extremely enticing -temptation to use torrents (especially during this recession)-but it is WRONG and the Holy Spirit has been convicting me. Also with CDs that are burned and I don't own. I'm telling everyone this information to also see what your opinion is on it. This is a personal conviction (Please share if you have any similar convictions) but then again this could also be used to help others who are struggling because believe me it is very difficult to do away with these things but only through the power of Christ and my choice to live by Him was I able to do this. The same conviction occured for downloading ISOs and nds ROMS to play PSP and Nintendo DS games for free. I was so HUGE on gaming but I am willing to put it down to follow Jesus 100% with all my heart, soul, and mind. I feel myself drawing closer to Him through His word and worship. I couldn't get to this point if I didnt put down my will (gaming, free music, free movies, etc.) and embrace His will.
I KNOW this is a really old thread (lol) but I just had to say, no matter who wants to tell you how lame you are for feeling convicted about things like this, I'm really proud of you for doing what you're doing :) Not too many people are willing to give things up because it's not pleasing to God, and even less Christians would even bother to listen to the Lord when He is telling them to stop something they 'love'! Blessed are you, for heeding the voice of the Holy Spirit, and getting rid of the things that were keeping you from a closer walk with the Lord :) you won't regret it. I've done some similar things in my own life in this past year, and I am so glad I did. Be blessed :)

Wow... I have a cracked version of windows 7 running right now, I got illegal version of Sony Vegas Pro, I got a cracked version of Adobe Photoshop cs5, I got countless mp3's I downloaded........ illegally...

and I saw this topic and I just wanted to let everyone know. I am going to reformat my computer back to windows xp ( original ) Bought version from 2001.... And I will be using freeware applications such as open office and other softwares to replace all my cracked software I illegally downloaded....

This is bad guys, i recommend everyone do the same, this is SIN. God does not want you to have the mindset of "i can download whatever I want and get away from it"

Like other people said, If I would go into a store and physically steal adobe photoshop and walkout of the store and steal it? NO. But, I did download it illegally.... which is ILLEGAL and not MORAL to my standards..

Same for all the other 20 illegal games I have on my computer.. (Call of Duty, red faction, black ops)/etc... it's all illegal and it's all full of sin. And Whenever you login you are buried with all that sin each time and will accomplish nothing on your computer while doing so. You can live a sin-free life with a legit computer, and operating system without downloading cracked software/games. BUY IT LEGALLY!

This thread has shocked my life.. what a change, I am literally going to reformat everything and delete everything right now after I submit this post. So god bless me guys, Thanks everyone....................... be back in a cuple hours xD

Torrents and Limewire in itself are not wrong, but what it's used for.

Downloading your favourite music and movies are not good reasons for keeping them. I too have downloaded music and movies using torrents, but I deleted all that. I still have Vuze, the only reason I would use it is to download something like Linux OS which is free.

No matter how you look at it, if you download music or movies that you haven't paid for, it is stealing. It's piracy.

Another point to consider is, downloading material illegally means you can download pretty much every album and movie ever released (provided it's there online) - what does this mean in terms of time?

Usually, the average consumer isn't going to buy 10 music albums in a month, or buy 10 movies. You will just waste time "consuming" all that you've downloaded, and there is an unlimited supply.

Blind post: I just want to say that downloading music off the internet without paying for it isn't illegal.

It is however a tort.

The thing is that if I download someone else's copywrited song, I can not be arrested and sent to jail. But the person who holds the copywrite can sue me for intellectual property violation.

Now morally speaking, its up to you how you feel about it.

I started buying all my music on Itunes last year, and I like it more this way, the music quality is always constant, and feels good knowing you paid for something, and just makes it easier. I get so mad when kids at school complain that they don't have any music on there Ipod because they couldn't get it into Itunes.

Although the only time I ever torrent, is for when I missed an episode of a show. Which I don't see anything wrong with, since it would be just as if you watched it on tv. Its not like you had to pay for it to watch from the start

Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with it. Legislators creating law telling me I can't hear sounds without paying for it!? Thats absurd. Greedy corporate America will not dictate my decisions.

Before someone tells me "Obey the laws of the land", let me clarify on how I see the picture. Not all scripture is meant to be taken 100 % literal. You have to use your judgment, and honestly; I don't think downloading music constitutes as sin.

Peace.
