I suppose it depends on whether you want something simplistic like "whitey is bad and stole all the land," or if you're looking for historical reality. The English colonists and whatever term you like for American aboriginals co-existed fairly well until American Aboriginals took it upon themselves to massacre the population of Jamestown, unprovoked I might add. At that point what ensued was a war between a civilization that was in the late Imperial Age and a civilization that was in the late Stone Age for the most part. Like any war both sides had their heroes, demons, and atrocities to go round. However, the wildly large technological gap left the outcome of the war in little doubt.

It might be more PC at this point to portray all American aboriginals as peaceful doves that were attacked by the bad white man. But the reality is the warlike nature of many of the tribes of North America left any outcome besides warfare unlikely when they came into contact with Europeans and other American aboriginals alike. The Spanish were able to brutalize the Aztecs because the Aztecs had been brutalizing their neighbors for so long that they were more than willing to help the Spanish brutalize the Aztecs. In much the same way the English and French were able to use long standing hatred between tribes to enlist them in continuing their European war on American soil.

I don't see the English posters here wailing and gnashing their teeth over the way you all have been brutalizing the Scots and the Irish since the Medieval period.

Ummm, let's see...settlers "the white man" (lol) killed them off (in many ways, even ways by alcohol. The extreme alcoholism that has run rampant through years years of Indians is basically from the white man giving them alcohol in trade. Very sad), the indians themselves killed each other off (considering many tribes were very violent and fought with each other all time).

As for the politically correct/incorrect term for the people, I really couldn't care less what the heck you call them, and I'm 1/16 Cherokee myself. I wouldn't bother me if anybody called me a "kraut" (considering I'm mostly German). Stuff like that doesn't bother me and I don't see why anyone else should be bothered by such things either. It's so silly. My solution to this? Choose not to be offended by it. Anyhow...for me, I use both "Indian" and "Native American" terms.

I think it’s said that Native Americans crossed over on a land bridge from Asia (thousands and thousands of years ago). The Native Americans distant ancestors were not native to the Americas but they are native in the fact their people have been here for thousands and thousands of years. How long does someone have to live somewhere to be considered a Native?

Thanks, Pro. I also have a problem with the deceitful portrayal of Native Americans as all "peaceful."

You have a problem with everything.

I'm actually Cherokee.

I don't care if i'm called indian or native american, the connotations are the same in my eyes. I just say native american because it can get confusing to say indian and have someone ask "which type of indian?"

Here is a link that talks about general things that lead to the native americans decreasing in population.

What happened to the Native People

Best reply in the thread so far. I doubt most Native Americans care anymore than most black folks care whether people refer to them as 'black' or 'African American'.

I kind of agree...Raddy, you seem to be waaaay too ethnocentric for a former sociology major like myself. You should try to look at things a little more objectively. It's possible to look at things from an objective standpoint and hold firm in what you believe. If you know what you believe and are secure in that, objectivity should never cause problems for you. And if it does, it will only further solidify your beliefs or rework them.

the high disease gradient between the old and new world. chronic and epidemic diseases that were common in the old world (flu, measles, small pox, etc.) just broke into the new world, territory that had never seen them before with devastating moral and physical effects.

eurasia had thousands of years of practical experience with epidemic disease, a sickness in china could travel to the med across the asian grasslands, so the populations were constantly exposed and had natural immunities and developed cultural practices for dealing with disease. for geographic reasons, the new world didn't have this constant mix and exposure of disease, and were "ripe" for diseases that in the old world were much less formidable. when you hear a disease called a "childhood disease" it also means that everyone is exposed, and you either died of it as a child or got well and carried some degree of acquired immunity. again, no so in the new world.

even if the europeans had arrived with the best possible intentions, native american populations still would have crashed.

Christian America fulfilled the white man's burden and their manifest destiny by murdering and driving them from their land so that God could found the best nation on earth.

You worry me sometimes. And I'm not really joking.

Last I checked there were still many alive ;)

A strained relationship developed between the Indians and the settlers starting from the revolutionary war. Some good relations happens, but a lot of negative.

If were were a settler in the early 1800's, how would you feel about raiding parties? Not necessarily stealing food either.

Thanks for bringing more facts in. Too many of the responses here seem to be more about people's opinions and attitudes.
