My grandmother is sick today. Probably more so than any other person in my life, she has been a central, loving figure who brought and brings tremendous comfort to not only me, but many others.
Thinking today about her going to heaven, (which at some point she will) I thought about how much lonelier my life would be without her around. The one thing that she brings to the lives around her is that no one ever feels alone...you feel part of her family...a mother to many including myself.
The greatest fear most people have is not dying, but being alone. God made us as relational creatures and when that relationship is not there or is removed from us, it leaves an emptiness at the core of our being that is fundamental to who we are.
Without our relationships both with God and each other, we lose everything that makes us who we are. As a child, it wasn't until God showed me that I could have deep personal intimate relationship not only with Him, but with others besides my grandmother (who raised me) that I no longer had that paralyzing and terrifying fear. Now in the twilight of my grandmother's life, I still feel a deep pain and my heart is very heavy at the thought of the eventual loss of her closeness this side of heaven, but I am no longer in bondage to the fear of ever being alone.
