If my understanding of the evolution of the term is correct it refers to Armenians that survived the genocide while remaining in Armenian, as opposed to many others that fled into neighboring countries. Though in the common vernacular now it's something of a stereotype term along the lines of what guido means to Italians. Of course, I could be totally off base here.
"Guido" only refers to a certain specific group of Italians, sort of like "Cholo" and Mexicans.

I don't have any sort of ethnicity. I am American. :p

That is exactly it. But, my grandparents were not in Armenia during the Genocide, they were in Turkey (in the small communities of Armenians there) They left during the Genocide (actually forced-killed out). Around the 1930s they came back to Turkey and around 1940'-50's they went to Armenia. So my parents are born and raised there, and so was I.
I can go on and on about the History of Hayastanci's who came back to Armenia. It will fill insane about of pages here. loll.
I just wish so much of it was not destroyed because much of the family history is passed down with letters and what my great-grandparents told us. I don't know much else passed it, because records were not kept by them of our their own family history. Which is understandable and logical.
Now the ones who stayed in the neighboring countries are Beirutahyes, Parskahyes, Lebanahyes, Egyptahyes, etc., etc., etc.

and yes, it has become an extremely annoying stereotype. Though, in some ways, there is truth to it.

And people say my obsession with obscure information is never useful.

So come clean Ethnog, do you refuse to wear anything but Adidas track pants, gold chains, and carry like four cell phones? :D

What I mean is: even if you're born in a certain ethnic group, you may feel you don't have the traits generally associated with that particular group. Contrarily, you may feel as if you have more in common with other groups than you do with your own. If so, what then are you? Or, more precisely, what then are you not?

Just a fun thread, so no need to 'over analyze' it.;)

Interesting thread!

I have differing nationalities in my blood, but identify with: Hispanic, European and African [American] cultures. I don't really feel as though I "belong" in Asian groups (although some people enjoy pigeonholing me as an Asian). I don't feel like an outcast. There are some things within the cultures that resonate with me for sure... but I can tell you that by going to certain clubs in the past has made it ever-apparent how not petite I am, so I stick out like a sore thumb around Asian women. Literally. I tend to be taller and bigger than the Asian dudes. :/

But that's alright.. ;)

In the American educational world anything east of Germany falls into the obscure. Sorry.

I'm just gonna go ahead and pretend that you didn't say that. :p

Then again, I have a Svetlana Loboda album on on iPod, so maybe I'm not one to talk about musical selections.

Hey, sometimes a girl just needs to hear some rabiz. Sometimes, I also like being around the guys and hearing them talk rabiz. :D and bust out with a word or two, and get them looking. ^_^

LOOLL at Svetlana Loboda.

p.s.... yes slightly altered.. but still!!! :O!

^_^ Our family's urban legend says we're the descendants of some Romanov, illegitimate, of course. But I don't really believe it.

And a lot of people have told me I look Russian.

i wasn't aware I was supposed to identify with one group.

I suppose if I have to pick... British. I'm a quarter Scottish and I've been exposed to British humour and culture my entire life and I can understand that mindset best.

I can find things I admire about practically any ethnic group though. There's a reason I've been considering Anthropology as my minor. :sorry:

I'm a white boy and I identify as a boy, and the people that I 'identify' with are white people. Now while I will befriend anyone, no matter what skin color, I have nothing against any other race, I'm not a segregationist and I'm not a racist but the way that history for me has been has always been that the traits that I share with my closer friendships and relations has always been shared between two Caucasians, be it male or female, platonic or romantic with women and platonic with men. I've even dated a Spanish girl.

I don't feel I have anything else in common with the stereotypical views about other cultures but my own with the exceptions that we are Americans and that we are Homo Sapiens. That doesn't mean it can't happen, it just means at this point in my life, the Caucasians have been where I have felt more connection, more association with.

I identify a lot my Scottish heritage and some with my German which are the two main bloodlines in me (about 1/4 of each).

I used to identify with the little bit of Cherokee in me, but not so much anymore.

I certainly don't identify much with being an American. I think that would be anti-ethnic.
