First of all, this is not a thread to condemn piercing or make fun of anyone, so I'll thank everyone not to do so. But I am wondering, what is the appeal in piercings? I mean, I can understand a lady wanting to be able to decorate an earlobe, and I think nose-studs can be cute. But I just don't understand why anyone would want to have, say, a dozen piercings on her face. Or why anyone would want a chain attached to a finger. And... nipple piercings? WHY ON EARTH WOULD SOMEONE DO THAT?

Just curious.

It's attention-seeking behavior, nothing more. If no one were going to be looking at you, you wouldn't be doing it. And a lot of people think it makes them sexy (tongue rings, belly rings, nipple rings, where-the-sun-don't-shine rings). The difference, for me anyway, is that other bodily enhancements, like tattoos and makeup, are decorative, and can be downright beautiful, while piercings are just various ways of stabbing metal rods through your flesh so all your friends think you're really cool and you can sit around talking about how hard your life is and that you must suffer a whole lot cause you like the awesome pain of poking needles through your skin. I do find some piercings to be really attractive (tiny sparkly studs, for example), but when you're stretching out your earlobs to look like donuts, or you've got chains hooked to various facial surfaces...it goes beyond "self expression" into "look at me! I'm shocking!", and that's just stupid to me.

That being said

I totally disagree with this. For some people....piercings are beautiful. In other cultures, this has been the case and it's spilling over into our own. It's not a "look at me" issue for many people...it's celebrating enhancing beauty in another way....JUST like makeup and clothing and haircuts and jewelry.

My daughter has 8 holes in her ears including a tragus and a nose ring. She fawns over piercings on others...she thinks it's beautiful. My step sister has dozens....I probably don't know all the places she's had it done, lol. Some are gone...like her tongue ring and monroe...but she has her dimples pierced right now. It's self expression...self enhancement.....like a haircut and color.

Unless we are wearing homemade clothing in neutral shades like the Amish...we seek ways to make ourselves feel beautiful. I don't see this as being any different.

BTw.....I have 4 holes...in my lobes...but I only use 2. I don't get the piercings either...other than a nose stud...they have no appeal to me. However, from knowing many people...some intimately...with multiple piercings...I know that for many of them it's not about being shocking.

Body modification is as old as human beings are. Facial piercings may be relatively new to the west, but they've taken on a firm hold with certain subcultures that preference it as their style of self decoration. It's really not any different than tattooing, or even wearing make up. As for the discomfort aspect, every day thousands upon thousands of women endure significant and ongoing discomfort to wear high heels because they enjoy the way they enhance their appearance.

I agree. My cousin has several tattoos and two piercings (tongue and belly button). She does not have them to show off. Most people don't even know about the piercings. She has them for herself as a form of artistic expression. As B says with other cultures, not everyone grew up in a socially conservative family or lives as a social conservative. My cousin grew up with a step-father (my uncle) who was into Harleys, classic rock, and tattoos. So tattoos and piercings are very normal to her, not something that she would think of as causing shocking reactions from others.

I think getting piercings are as popular as tattoos these days. I don't care for them in the same way as I don't care for tattoos.

Although some can go a bit overboard. Tongue piercings can seem "artistic" but from what I remember from my old sinner life, they aren't there for artistic reasons. :sorry:

I used to have a belly button ring. I got it done for me and me alone. I never wear shirts that would show it and I didn't tell anyone about it but my sis-in-law who went with me. I wasn't ashamed. I just felt that it was my personal business.

So I don't think all piercings are about getting attention. Most can be. And to those who have them, they are attractive.

But I shudder at even the thought of nipple rings. Ouch.

I don't see anything necessarily "wrong" with it, I just think it's silly and screams for attention and needing to fit in or feel like you're "cool".

It depends on the person. Some people do things to fit in with a group, but other people really don't need to fit in. They just are.

I've found most piercings to be as genuinely attractive as the "traditional" ear rings. Nose, eyebrow, lip... wherever. It's a beautifying element. God the father himself in Ezekiel 16:12 shows his affection for Israel by symbolically saying that he gave her a nose ring (Hebrew "nezem" which by context in that verse would mean "Nose Ring" as opposed to the context of the same Hebrew word in Job 42:11).

Rebekah was apparently given a nose ring as part of the gift of accepting Isaac as her husband. See Genesis 24:30.

Some people have taken Isaiah 3:18-23 massively out of context to say that rings and jewelry and nose rings and etc. are forbidden by God. My understanding of the context was that it was not the adornments, but the ungodly fascination with them which led to materialistic mindsets and eventually apostacy. If it was sin, why would God himself use the imagery of a middle-eastern nose ring when speaking in Ezekial?

In short, piercings are pretty in almost all cases. People like to make themselves look nice and it seems to be a reflection of God's character imprinted in all humans, possessors of the Holy Spirit or not, to be ordered and enjoy beauty. Different cultures have different preferences, but typically speaking we all enjoy the same core things.

Pierce away, ladies. Or not. It's all good. ;)
