Deuteronomy 5:8

Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

I've always wondered about that verse....I mean-I can't imagine that God means for us not to paint pictures or sculptures. Wouldn't it mean in reference to worshiping the created objects, rather than just having them?

I mean, if I painted a picture of a man, and then got on my knees and worshiped it, I can see how that is a sin, but think about the beautiful cherubs that were created by man to put on the Ark of the Covenant.......

As I pointed out in my post above - if you look at all of the verses that refer to graven images in the Bible- and you might want to look them up - it is very interesting if you do so, they always refer to something that was prayed to. They do not refer merely to statues, but specifically to statues that were prayed to.

Coruupting oneself is often shown in relation to a graven image same with the calf, he said "they corrupted themselves" as well as abomination you can see a patern of wording in respects them

Duet 4:16 Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,

Duet 4:25 When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger:

Isaiah 44:17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.

Isaiah 44;19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?

Duet 29:17 And ye have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them)

Ezek 14:6 Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.

1Thes 1:9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;

John 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

The Ark of the Covenant was topped with images of heavenly beings.

God said to put then there.

So, according to Protestant theology, God ordered no idolatry and then immediately ordered the Jews to engage in idolatry.

Was God wrong or is Protestant theology wrong?
And? because G-d did something that enables man to sin?

The Keruv were there to represent what is in heaven. Only one person in all of the millions of Israel ever saw them, and that was only the High Priest on one day of the year. He did not bow down to them, nor worship them, nor pray to them, in fact he probably didn't even see him because he was to bring in the incense to make a cloud around the ark, so he probably never saw them, so this point is moot.

They were put there for him and no one else. Your skating on thin ice with your third statement, you are accusing G-d of sin and also tempting one to sin, I'd be really careful about doing that if I were you.

It comes down to this. There is no need to go to God thru anything other than direct prayer to God. In the name of Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come BOLDLY unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Galatians 3:20 Now a MEDIATOR is not a MEDIATOR of one, but God is one.

1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one MEDIATOR between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

But thats just Bible.

If you look up bowing down in the Bible, it was only done before God, or before people in some cases such as to the king, and to idols.
Again, it is best to read the whole chapters to see the context.

Isaiah 44:19
No one stops to think, no one has the knowledge or understanding to say, "Half of it I used for fuel; I even baked bread over its coals, I roasted meat and I ate. Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?"
Isaiah 44:18-20 (in Context) Isaiah 44 (Whole Chapter)
Isaiah 46:6
Some pour out gold from their bags and weigh out silver on the scales; they hire a goldsmith to make it into a god, and they bow down and worship it.
Isaiah 46:5-7 (in Context) Isaiah 46 (Whole Chapter)
Micah 5:13
I will destroy your carved images and your sacred stones from among you; you will no longer bow down to the work of your hands.
Micah 5:12-14 (in Context) Micah 5 (Whole Chapter)

That is true. If you look up the words pray and prayer in the Bible (other than in the KJV where the word pray is thrown in in many places where there is no Hebrew or Greek word to back it up and it is used to indicate to ask),but if you look up prayer, prayer in the Bible is only to God or in a few cases to a false god or idol.

There are no examples in the Bible of anyone ever praying to anything other than to God or to a false god or idol.
Here are some of the verses from a search of the word "pray" from Bible Gateway in the NIV. I chose that translation because it only translates the words from the original languages that mean pray as pray rather than using words for "ask" as pray.

2.Genesis 20:17
Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife and his slave girls so they could have children again,
Genesis 20:16-18 (in Context) Genesis 20 (Whole Chapter)
3.Genesis 24:12
Then he prayed, "O LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
Exodus 8:8
Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Pray to the LORD to take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will let your people go to offer sacrifices to the LORD."
Numbers 11:2
When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed to the LORD and the fire died down.
Judges 13:8
Then Manoah prayed to the LORD : "O LORD, I beg you, let the man of God you sent to us come again to teach us how to bring up the boy who is to be born."
1 Samuel 1:10
In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the LORD.
BibleGateway.com - Keyword[wash my mouth]Search: pray

If you look up the word that is translated as "pray" in the KJV as in I pray thee, it does not refer to prayer at all - in the Hebrew it is נָא A primitive particle of incitement and entreaty, which may usually be rendered: "I pray," "now," or "then"http://www.blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Gen&c=12&t=KJV#conc/13
and it is not the same word that is used for prayer, and there are several different Hebrew words used for prayer. Actually, in KJV, some of the words that mean pray are translated as inquire of the Lord and other things.
Genesis 12 (Blue Letter Bible: KJV - King James Version)

I looked for the word "statue" rather than "graven image" and only found references to the statue in Daniel
1.Daniel 2:31
[ The King's Dream ] "You, O king, were looking and behold, there was a single great statue; that statue, which was large and of extraordinary splendor, was standing in front of you, and its appearance was awesome.

2.Daniel 2:32
"The head of that statue was made of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of bronze,
Daniel 2:31-33 (in Context) Daniel 2 (Whole Chapter)
3.Daniel 2:34
"You continued looking until a stone was cut out without hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and crushed them.
Daniel 2:33-35 (in Context) Daniel 2 (Whole Chapter)
4.Daniel 2:35
"Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were crushed all at the same time and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away so that not a trace of them was found But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.
Daniel 2:34-36 (in Context) Daniel 2 (Whole Chapter)

and also to the verse already mentioned in Micah and to the statue in Revelation
1.Micah 5:13
Your carved images also I will cut off and your statues or pillars out of your midst, and you shall no more worship the work of your hands.
Micah 5:12-14 (in Context) Micah 5 (Whole Chapter)

Revelation 13:13-15 (in Context) Revelation 13 (Whole Chapter)
3.Revelation 13:15

4.Revelation 14:9

6.Revelation 19:20
And the beast was seized and overpowered, and with him the false prophet who in his presence had worked wonders and performed miracles by which he led astray those who had accepted or permitted to be placed upon them the stamp (mark) of the beast and those who paid homage and gave divine honors to his statue. Both of them were hurled alive into the fiery lake that burns and blazes with brimstone.

7.Revelation 20:4
Then I saw thrones, and sitting on them were those to whom authority to act as judges and to pass sentence was entrusted. Also I saw the souls of those who had been slain with axes [beheaded] for their witnessing to Jesus and [for preaching and testifying] for the Word of God, and who had refused to pay homage to the beast or his statue and had not accepted his mark or permitted it to be stamped on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived again and ruled with Christ (the Messiah) a thousand years.

The translation issue surfaces on the English end; we entreat, but the worship is to God alone. When entreaty (in the Gospels) was made to Christ, that was prayer, because Christ is God. When entreaty in the Gospels is made to humans, then it is not to God, but it is still a request or entreaty, etc.

Prayer in the Bible is to God alone or to false gods or idols.
Entreating or asking in the Bible is only done to living human beings.
Even in the NT, there are no examples of anyone praying to or entreating or asking of anyone who is not alive.
