I posted this in the Missions & Evangelism forum and thought it would apply here also.

Good thing the early church didn't evangelize like this!

From Way of the Master (Ray Comfort)

Free Hugs... No Gospel

I was with our team at Huntington Beach last Saturday when I noticed some teenagers with signs that said, "FREE HUGS." It turns out that they were a Christian group sharing "God's love" with strangers, by giving them a hug. I asked the leader if the kids shared the gospel with the strangers they hugged. They didn't. It was "relationship evangelism." Yes, they were going to Hell if they died in their sins, but they didn't want to be pushy. I encouraged him to have his team at least give out tracts to those they hugged, but he was in a hurry and had to leave before I could convince him to do so.

In a list of "Ten Ideas for Everyday Outreach," a leading Christian magazine recently suggested praying for people "as you walk by them," tell them you appreciate them, leave notes of encouragement, pick up trash, leave a thank you note for waiters, be friendly, etc.

If that's outreach, what are they reaching out for? Is it so that if sinners die in their sins they will think about how nice Christians were to them, and how they keep the sidewalks free of trash? They will need more than a hug, in Hell.

I couldn't help but think of how bold a person has to be to run around with a sign that says "FREE HUGS." Surely there must be someone in their leadership that has read "How shall they hear without a preacher," and will steer these kids to be true and faithful witnesses. Then again, they may have got their hugs idea from the leading Christian magazine, and therefore think that they are doing the right thing.

I've seen many of the "free hug" campaigns go terribly wrong, because people (either those doing the hugs or those receiving them) abuse the system. Sharing the Gospel is not a matter of handing out tracts, hugging folks, or even sharing a "five point plan of salvation".

1 Corinthians 2:2
For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

Some christians don't want to be pushy. Can't they just let the lights shine and evangelize when the moment presents itself?
That would be neglecting the fulfilling of 2 Timothy 4:2: "Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching."

Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses, and other false religions do good deeds and can make great friends. How are we different from them if we don't share the Gospel?

The Gospel is the ONLY way to be saved. If we really care about people, we would warn them about the wrath to come.

If Jesus is alive in you then your light shines out and attracts people to you, without banging them on the head with a bible quote or eligious solace. If they are a long way off and they have not asked for it then as Jesus said "Do you want to be healed?" He was never pushy. So many people need your words of hope and comfort ,healing prayers and help practical and otherwise.Within the Gods direct input,Gods willbe done, not ours.Only if He opens up the hearts and minds of those we meet with, and if any work bears fruitl for Jesus it will be His work not ours."I can do all things in Him who strengthens me."

Jesus made it very clear that he was the only way to Heaven. Just because he healed a person of a disease does not mean that they got saved and went to Heaven.

Jesus was pushy at times. He talked about Hell more then he talked about Heaven. He turned over tables and chased the money changers out of the Temple.
