Heard abt this from CNN...

A 55-year-old West Virginia grandfather has been verified as the sole winner of the national Powerball lottery worth $314.9 million (December 26)

SCOTT DEPOT, West Virginia (AP) -- Work, family and God have long been the three most important things in Andrew Jackson "Jack" Whittaker Jr.'s life.

A $113.4 million Powerball payout from the Multi-State Lottery Association is doing nothing to change that.

Whittaker, 55, is a millionaire contractor whose three businesses often require him to work 90-hour weeks.

Whittaker says he has few plans for himself but wants to lavish his winnings on Ginger and his granddaughter, Brandi Bragg, 15.

As an adult, Whittaker has always tithed 10 percent of his earnings to his church, the Church of God. He now plans to provide $17 million, or 10 percent of his gross lottery winnings, to three Church of God pastors.

"Those three pastors have stood by us when we were sick, prayed for us when we were in need and comforted us when were afflicted," Whittaker said. "They've touched our lives, and I'd trust them with anything I have."

Waiting at Yeager Airport in Charleston for a Thursday night flight to New York City, where he was scheduled to appear on Friday morning news shows, Whittaker credited faith for his lottery win.

"My life has been blessed since I was a teenager," he said. "I've always had plenty of work, plenty of whatever I've wanted. I've always felt blessed to be alive, even when I've been sick or my family members have been sick."

"I truly believe this is an opportunity for me to give testimony about tithing and spreading wealth," Whittaker said before driving to the airport from his two-story brick home in a Scott Depot development.

Malachi 2:10
10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

God prospers us and we can be a blessing to others!

well b4 you guys judge that man, he aint a gambler. he doesnt go around buying lottery tickets. He was already very rich owning three construction companies and works extremely hard -- if you bothered to read carefully b4 jumping to conclusions.

He simply went to buy gas for his car and the cashier sold him a ticket and he just took it without thinking anything about it. It's like you go shopping and if you spend above x$ you are entitled to a lucky draw or scratch and win card. that dont make you a gambler.

also, when interviewed by CNN, the interviewer told him "you are very lucky" He said "No, I'm very blessed" IOW God blesses me.

sola fide, i think you are taking it too far. no one's encouraging anyone to go gamble and hope that God will let you win. That's not what the story is about at all.

so if my wife and I go for my company's dinner and dance and our ticket happens to strike first prize that's sinning and gambling? if you buy gas, get a scratch and win card and actually win something that's gambling and sinning? oh come on.

and if this man did what was contradictory to the Word as you insist, then how cld God have blessed him? and if not God, who then? so you are in fact saying that the devil has blessed this man. yet this man tithes his winning and blesses 3 churches and others with it. doesnt make sense right?

i am not taking any kind of stand on gambling. i just want the facts to be straight. this guy did not just buy 1 ticket, on a whim. he purposely went to that store and purchased $100 worth of tickets. he was not a regular player at all. he said that he did that because the pot had grown so large whether or not he has committed or is committing sin is between him and GOD. i say GOD BLESS him for using his 15 minutes of fame to praise the LORD and to give GOD the glory.

peace

cenimo,

Have you heard of Sri Lankan crabs? These crabs, when put in a tank, dont have to be covered up. You know why? Becos as soon as one tries to climb out another will pull it down.

Some Christians are like that. They have such a small heart and spirit, that when another Christian does well, instead of praising the Lord and rejoicing with him, they must pull that Christian down, by finding some fault to accuse him of.

Gee, and you don't even know me.... I was just stating what probably is a fact...just making an observation about the irony of a situation and you decide to be an opportunist and use my post to jump on me...thanking God that you're not "like that Publican over there"

I believe that gambling is a sin most of the time. Like Humblejoe said I d o not know if gambling small non Important amounts is a sin. Like if my firends and I were to play poker for spare chnage or something. But I do think that Cenimo has a point. The lottery although legal is gambling and it does raise an interesting ethical question. Do the pastor take money that was earned through a way that they condemmed? (if they did of course.) Is it ethical for them to do that? That is a very interesting problem.

Are you ad-libbing this part about the one ticket? I heard that he had purchased $100.00 in powerball tickets for that drawing.

Although I do not see anything wrong with playing the lottery... I do not think that God makes those little balls pop out.

The news story stated that he spent $115 on tickets, I guess that's 115 tickets...

Gambling in the Bible (some use this passage)

And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

also, as people who work in casinos will tell you, this is an everyday occurrence, many times over

As a dog returneth to its vomit, so a fook returneth to his folly

Proverbs 26:11
