A New York boy can wear his rosary beads to school — for now.

A federal judge has granted a request by lawyers for Raymond Hosier for a temporary restraining order that allows the 13-year-old boy to return to school after having been suspended indefinitely last month.

Ed White, a senior counsel at the American Center for Law and Justice, told The Washington Times about the judge's decision Tuesday afternoon to void the school district's suspension and allow Raymond to attend classes wearing his rosary as he sees fit.

The ACLJ also filed papers Tuesday with the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of New York suing the Schenectady City School District.

According to the ACLJ, Raymond was sent home from Oneida Middle School on May 17 for wearing the beads, which the school dress code terms as "gang-related material." He was indefinitely suspended May 19 when he again wore the rosary beads to school.

Do some gang members wear rosary beads to show what gang they belong to? I know there are certain colors, hair styles, clothing styles etc.. that indicate gang membership. I was not aware that rosary bead wearing was also a gang indicator. If it is, ya'll should pray for them.

Yeah when I was younger I had some Latin King friends and they would wear rosaries.

But just because some gang members may wear rosaries does not mean that everyone wearing rosaries are gang related.

I thought Catholics weren't supposed to wear Rosary Beads as jewelry.

Is that correct? I am not Catholic so I am not sure about that. I think I had also heard that the beads were to be used as a tool in prayer, not worn as jewelry. But perhaps a child would not know that?

I thought Catholics weren't supposed to wear Rosary Beads as jewelry. If someone is doing something they aren't supposed to do as a Catholic, then they are also told not to do it by a school, but the school rescinds and allows it, then it's a victory for the Church?

Youre right. Rosaries arent designed to be worn. They are basically instruments to keep count of the number of prayers (besides also being very powerful weapons against evil). That is why when u see images of the blessed Mother she is never wearing them. They are always in her hands.

You rejoice when a boy is allowed to practice Christianity but are horrified when people are allowed to practice Islam; you consider the boy being allowed to wear a rosary to school a victory for religious freedom, yet you consider the mosque being built near the site where the Twin Towers used to stand a defeat for religious freedom.

Okay and what if one is against the building of a mosque near Ground Zero because it will undoubtedly offend many and cause bad memories for many resulting in ongoing trauma but also because the building of mosques only allows Muslims to continue in their aggressive proselytism campaigns?

You're putting words in people's mouths. The practice of Islam isn't the contention people have with the mosque being built there.

I don't see how wearing rosary beads to school is considered practicing Christianity. If anything it is a mock to the Catholic Religion (IMO). I don't see how any Catholic could see this as a victory. Are not the rosary for Catholic prayer? What am I missing here?

During the VietNam war, some high school students in Des Moines, Iowa wore black armbands in protest of the war. They were expelled. The Court took the students' side and affirm the First Amendment does not stop at the schoolhouse door. (Tinker v. Des Moines ).

This student has a Supreme Court ruling affirming his right to wear a rosary. On his own time, he is even free to make use of it.

Some wear the rosary as a penance. Others as a sign of devotion to Jesus through Mary.
