You're not my nemesis
I found the finale intriguing, just like the show has always been. There were a lot of mysteries left that way, and I expected that. It seems like it would have gone against the nature of the writers and the show as a whole for everything to be explained. They meant to leave everyone speculating and thinking. That intrigue is the power the show has held over millions of fans for all these years and it will continue to do so for awhile as people question and speculate and draw their own meaning into the show.
Alex was not at the church. She was likely not dead yet. I believe that is also why Ben didn't go into the church with the others. The Losties had gone to this pergatory world to come to peace with their lives and their issues. However, at the point they all went into the church, they had resolved their issues. Ben's remained unresolved, though, because he could not make amends with Alex for her death. Make sense?
The island life was science fiction. I think the faith elements had more to do with the "pergatory" flash-sideways life they had created.Way back when Lost first started, I thought the writers said that everything that happened on the island could be explained with a natural real world explanation. Am i remembering that right? After time that became "a psuedo science" explanation , and finally into a mythical or magical explanation. Don't get me wrong; i loved the series but by the end I think they ventured off the original train of thought. It was nice to see Hurley and Ben working together; especially after Hugo threw a piping hot microwave burrito at Ben and considering their general history. Was Alex there at the church?

Yes, Boone was there. Which is actually a question I wanted answered from early on that never was. Remember way back when Locke went into the tent and used his "magic salve" and conjured up a picture of Boone covered in blood coming down the escalator at the airport, saying, "Theresa falls up the stairs. Theresa falls down the stairs." What was that all about?Shannon! thank you.
oh and i'm wrong. i just replayed the last scene on my itunes account and caught a single glimpse of boone. so its him, Christian, and locke. everyone is else a couple.
I think Aaron is there, not because Aaron actually died, but because Claire needed him there in her world in order to resolve her own issues so she could move on to the afterlife. The "pergatory" flash-sideways world was of everyone's own making. Someone asked why the characters could be shot and hurt in the flash-sideways world. I think it is because they had to in order for their stories to progress to the place where they came to grips with themselves. That's also why they were able to "heal" so quickly in the flash-sideways world (remember, Jack's bloody neck immediately was fine after he wiped it; Sun's gunshot wound healed after she realized where she was, and Locke recovered from surgery immediately after opening his eyes) -- because it was something they were making up to find each other again rather than a realistic order of events.hmm. although the theory that the sideways flashes are all just the making of the characters makes me wonder too - why is Aaron a newborn? You'd think in his reality he'd wanna be a bit older than that, hey?
Perhaps one of the reasons the writers wanted Jack and Juliet to have a son was to reinforce the idea that the pergatory world was one they had made up in order to find each other so they could move on. Jack's son is one that he needed to make a part of his story in order to come to peace with his past.hmmm good question, also he probably died later so it might not even make sense for him to be there at all. Why did Jack have a son with Juliet in the sideflash? I still don't understand that. and I still wanted some kind of closure with Walt and Micheal.
