Around here, up north, there are some kind of weird winter rituals, just for the challenge and madness of it. What they do is go out onto a frozen lake and cut a hole in it. Then they have people line up in their swimsuits and running shoes, two by two. Two people hold hands and take a flying run and jump into the lake. They climb out and get all warmed up and dry, etc. Each year you do this you advance up a notch in rank, from minnow to shark (like in swimming lessons).

My 13 year-old neice did this. Shocked me half to death.

So, who of you out there is nuts enough to try this?

Sounds like fun to me. On the Jersey shore they do it on winter holidays, there is a club actually called "the Polar Bear Club" who do it in an orginized fashion. In some northern european countries they do it for health reasons.

I would not try this. Too crazy for me.:)

The winter ritual where I live is that you must go out and get bread and milk if there is a storm  It is just too funny...a chance of snow and I can guarantee you that there will be no milk and bread at the store. Why is this I must ask? Can a person reallly survive on bread and milk???

Hmmmm.... now that I think of it.... if there were many towels waiting for me in a car preheated on full blast about 10 minutes prior, and a steaming cup of cocoa waiting for me in the car, I just might jump in, and climb right back out for the thrill. lol :)

I'd do it in a heartbeat, of course I like the to do things in the extreme. I love bungy jumping, extreme sports and sky diving and of course I love racing cars. I think the moment you hit the ice cold water you would learn real fast what it means to be alive and frozen ;)

I don't think this stuff is even safe to do just like that for an un-trained person. There are winter swimming clubs in Europe, yes (and not only do those people jump in the icy-cold water - they STAY in there, swimming back and forth) - but they will be the first ones to tell you that you need to get into it gradually, you need to be prepared. Unless you want a heart attack.
