I think so, lol, and while I'm there heada few blocks to get some black sesame ice cream at China Town Ice Cream Factory :yum:

Ooooh you need to PM me the address on where to get some of that.

Believe it or not, there is actually a Ukrainian Orthodox parish in the heart of Little Italy (used to be Italian Catholic) on Broome Street that I want to check out one of these days. Lunch in China town followed by dessert in Little Italy after Liturgy would be ideal.

Olive Garden is not an Italian restaurant. I'm sorry, but to get good Italian cuisine, do not go to a chain restaurant. You need to go to a private Mom & Pop place that makes their own sauces, their own recipes.

.

Mention Olive Garden around here, you'll get chased out into the street by an old guy, swearing at you in Italian!

Pick up a cookbook with Northern Italian cooking (or just about any region except Sicily) and you will see that Italian cooking reaches far beyond pasta and red sauce.

Excuse me, but this Sicilian resents that remark.

(inb4 "why would a Sicilian defend Italy")

It was not meant as a dig against Sicily, but more to quantify that different regions of Italy have different types of cuisine. The majority of the Italian cuisine that Americans know and love is from Sicily. Thus, if a person such as Michael were trying to experience something different, picking up a Sicilian cookbook would not behoove him.

Sheesh, lately I feel like every post of mine needs to start with an apology...

American Chain restaurants corrupt fine European cuisine into a degenerate form of its original recipe. They play on the stereotypes Americans love and give false impressions of what the real deal is like.

I don't eat pasta sauce, although I make the world's best pizza sauce.

Wow. This thread sure went off in unusual directions.

Don't worry. I'll get banned sooner or later for derailing every single thread I participate in. :D

Also, I'd argue that this isn't so much the case. My grandfather was from Sicily, and his cooking really did not resemble much of anything your typical American cooks when they think they're making "Italian" food. Come to think of it, I can't recall any occasion when he made stereotypical red sauce... :p

(He was also a Roman Catholic deacon, which means his cooking MUST BE INVALID O NOES!!!1)

That's because the Olive Garden is pseudo-Italian at best.

This is why my wife and I cook out of The Sliver Spoon. It is genuinely authentic (as it was / is a popular cookbook in Italy - kind of like the Red and White cookbook from Better Homes and Gardens is to American cooking).

You must have studied threads by RobNJ, Uncle Clem and myself from a few years ago. We could turn a thread on classic theology into a thread on classic rock in the blink of an eye.

You know, I accept Olive Garden is not real Italian. I also know that places like Don Pablos are also not real Mexican because I've had real Mexican cooked by a Mexican born and trained chef and they are very different... That said I still love the food at both restaurants.

My mother-in-law refers to some Mexican Restaurants (like Chi-Chi's) as
"yellow-cheese Mexican" ^_^

(My husband lived half his childhood south of the US border.)

Just consider us well rounded renaissance whacko's!!

You may be well rounded, but I'm quite slim thank-you-very-much.

But I am a whacko... definitely with you on that... perhaps my slimness is why I'm so poor at derailing threads...

I'll have to discuss that with my SF...
