You've revived your own thread! Awesome!

I'm listening to Sons of Liberty with Jon Schaffer (of Iced Earth fame). The entire album is a free download at Sons Of Liberty, if you're interested. It's his political concept album.

I just realized that I posted on the first page of this thread... 5 1\2 years ago!

I like both bands, though I feel as though they both only had about ten years of really good music in them. Moving Pictures and everything after that, I can take or leave. I know that's bizarre because so many consider Moving Pictures to be Rush's best album, but it's a bit too toned down, a bit "80s-ized," for me.

Same thing with Dream Theater, I feel as though 6DOIT (specifically the first disc) was the album that would end up defining their sound and formula, and the four albums to follow would be more or less playing off this. This is a big problem because the last decade has been such a huge period of growth for prog in general and prog metal in particular, so it really stands out. If Dream Theater was the only game in town then their stagnation wouldn't really be all that obvious, but that's not the case.

I don't want to come across too negative though, the two bands are pretty phenomenal. 2112 is one of my favourite albums (and I have a soft spot for Caress of Steel too) and Awake was a really interesting album by DT that is very unique for them and that had a lot of good moments (The Erotomania-Voices-Silent Man suite is probably my favourite thing the band has ever done)

Strange... Rush without Peart? Kind of like when I saw Yes last Summer without Jon Anderson (though I'd seen them like 7 times before). Kind of sad... all the great 70s bands are a shadow of their former selves. DT can still get it done, but James' voice isn't what it used to be on tour either.
