Genesis 49:31 (NIV)

There Abraham and and his wife Sarah were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried, and there I buried Leah.

The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites.

When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.

Genesis 50:1 (NIV)

Joseph threw himself upon his father and wept over him and kissed him.

Genesis 50:2 (KJV) And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.

Genesis 50:3 (KJV) And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.

Genesis 50:4 (KJV) And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

Genesis 50:5 (KJV) My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.

Genesis 50:6
6 Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do."

Genesis 50:7
7 So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh's officials accompanied him - the dignitaries of his court and all the dignitaries of Egypt -

Genesis 50:8
8 besides all the members of Joseph's household and his brothers and those belonging to his father's household. Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen.

Genesis 50:9
9 Chariots and horsemen also went up with him. It was a very large company.

Genesis 50:10
10 When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly; and there Joseph observed a seven-day period of mourning for his father.

When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and sorrowful lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.

Genesis 50:11 (RSV)

When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians." Therefore the place was named Abelmizraim; it is beyond the Jordan.
