All fasting does is make you hungry. I don't because I believe it's just a religious practise. It's stems from the belief that my good actions or performance is what moves God to favor me. As for gaining a deeper relationship with God through fasting, why would prayer and praise give you the same results?

Some people might say, 'well, Jesus fasted for 40 days', true, but He did so on the OT side of the cross. ;)

He also says the guests of the bridegroom will fast once He's gone (Matt. 9:15). I see where you're going with the "gaining favor with God" thing. I think people who are going for that tend to brag about the fact that they're fasting, when [I think] it's supposed to be a private matter kept unto yourself.

I do occasionally, mainly when I'm hoping for a breakthrough of some sort, like revelation or wisdom from the Lord over His Word or perhaps for instructions from Him about something I'm supposed to do.

I don't do it very often, last time was probably 6+ months ago but what I love about it is how much closer to the Lord I feel, because whatever I'm giving up held me back and then with it gone I'm less hindered to be near Him.

It's also true that it was during a time of fasting and prayer that God told the Apostles to send out Paul and Barnabas (Acts 13). Also in the next chapter, church elders are appointed through the act of prayer and fasting.

So to me, it seems to still have a place.

Jesus went out into the wilderness where there was no grub.
:sigh: He went out to the desert specifically because there was no grub. He fasted, I can admitt that why can't you?

Do not fast - diabetic and cannot fast.

Have friends who fast constantly off and on. I have just never been led to fast - even having friends that fast so much - I just felt unless it was called of God, why fast and I never felt the calling.
There are people who fast by avoiding specific foods, not all.

Not really, I guess I just like food a lot, and when I do fast I just eat 10X more! :p

My kind of fast! :D

Reminds me of an old Gallagher joke (for those who remember him):
"Why do they call it a fast, when it goes so dang slow?"

I don't . The Lord has not been leading me to do so .

Good. It's designed to be an act of willing worship and not some mandated "good work". Like all things, it should be done out of faith for the purpose to glorify God.

Do not quote me on this but...

Other than the spiritual benefits of fasting, a simple fast is also known to have some physiologic benefits as well (cleansing the body of impurities, etc.)

As someone who has struggled with overeating, the few times I have fasted have been wonderful to me for no other reason than training my flesh that it is okay to go without food.

I have done two 21 day daniel's fasts, just to get my body and mind out of a set routine. After the first fast I started having visions and dreams and interpreted a dream at Dairy Queen in public after this man and I prayed to God. Do not glorify me. Jesus Christ gets the glory. I do not want any thorns in the flesh.:)

And I would say you are not discerning correctly if you believe their act of fasting is why the Holy Spirit spoke to them about sending out Paul and Barnabas. ;)

Jews back then were taught that fasting brought them closer to God and He would speak to them through their obedience in the fast. Does that even sound christian to you? It took the Jews, even the apostles, a long time sometimes to shake off the jewish traditions.

Fasting should be done for the purpose of glorifying God? Yeah, maybe for the OT Jews, for us NT christians though out faith in God is what brings glory to him.
