Very true thoughts, knownbeforetime! I also loved what you wrote. Sorry I forgot to comment on it. I was responding to the Cinderella theme in general. In some versions of the story, she did know a better life before her father died but that was now behind her.
I thought about it... In Ever After, Danielle was about 10 when her father died. She would've remembered him. She had his book still. She would've remembered being loved. In the Disney version, it doesn't say how old she is....

In my story, my Cinderella is going to lose her father when she is very young and can't remember him.

Here's a short blurb I wrote a long, long time ago. It's "cinderella"'s first dance.

It was the first time she had ever danced. She had thought about it often, imagined it. She twirled around in the fields in a rhythmic sway when her stepmother wasn’t looking. She had never seen a picture or really had it described to her. Her body had a natural rhythm when it came to hearing a tune. She always swayed alone in her dreams and music was a rare thing in her experience. However, in these mental machinations, she never imagined that dancing included touching.

The only things she ever touched were dirt, pigs, chickens, and trees. Touching things was not a pleasant experience for her. She did not even experience a human's touch when she was disciplined. When she disobeyed, she got a switch put to her backside that she cut for herself so her stepmother wouldn’t have to dirty her hands or risk injury.

Tonight, right now, she felt the warm hand at her back. It rested there. It was not pushing her. She felt the other hand clasped in hers, covering it and caressing it. Her other hand wearily reached for his shoulder as she had seen the other couples do.

His eyes alone made her want to run and take cover. She could not stand to have his eyes on her. No one had ever gazed upon her. Gazed was the only word she could think of. His eyes were at once sapphire and gold. It felt like beams of high noon sunlight mixed with a cool breeze. She wondered if she had been set ablaze. She had only ever endured the cold, distant glares of her stepmother. However, his eyes actually wanted to rest where they were and see what they were seeing.

In that moment, she felt so afraid. She felt in her heart how unworthy she was. She was scared for the moment when the prince would find out that he had been fooled with. That somebody dared bring a servant girl to a royal event in the hopes that he would mistakenly choose her. She felt both the fire of his eyes and the fire of her guilty heart all at once. It was a battle for her very soul in those few moments. Would her heart yield to the prince's wondrous gaze? Or, would her heart yield to the years of the burden of guilt that her step-mother put upon her? To the victor, go the eternal spoils...
--------------------------

Ok, so the last paragraph is new... I just keep writing!

Great work, you know many of us even although we know for a certainty we are saved still feel unworthy but what did Jesus say about us?

1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

The Lord says we are holy, the blood of Jesus has washed our sins away, we are redeemed. Our Prince has looked on us with all the love and adoration and still does and counts us as worthy.

Hello! Wonderful sharings! I loved Cinderella as a child. My first exposure to the story, I think, was the original Rodgers and Hamersteins movie. I related to that Cinderella, with her strong imagination, and I was especially moved by the song the fairy godmother sang:

Impossible! For a plain yellow pumpkin to become a golden carriage,
Impossible! For a plain country bumpkin and a prince to join in marriage!
And four white mice will never be four white horses,
Such falderall and fiddle-de-de of courses,
Impossible! Impossible!

But the world is full of zanies and fools
who don't believe in sensible rules,
and don't believe what sensible people say,
and because of these ideally-eyed dopes keep building up impossible hopes
impossible
things are happening every day!

What a statement about faith! I'm glad to be one of the zanies!

I have that version on DVD and I have also seen the play on stage. It was only a high school performance but it was very "professional."

"The prince is having a ball! The prince is having a baaaaaaall!!!"

Thank you, kisstheson! The problem with the traditional Cinderella story and especially Ever After is that these girls don't act like they've been treated like a slave for years and years. Cinderella never had a chance to think of herself as anything more. She didn't know there was more. She wouldn't know dancing. She wouldn't know proper etiquette. She wouldn't even know how to properly bathe herself.

We've all seen and heard stories of abused children. They don't magically have a normal life once they've been taken out of the home. They endure years of therapy and nightmares. A lot even grow up to continue the cycle.

I'm even debating whether to include sexual abuse in my story... :/ I really want this story to be as real as possible (with some supernatural thrown in). Bad stuff happens to forgotten children...

Jesus didn't choose us because we were confident and pretty. He chose us when we were dirty, broken, and had no sense of identity. My Cinderella may be physically cleaned up and ready for the ball, her heart is in no way, shape, or form ready to stand by his side in marriage. However, my prince can heal my Cinderella's heart!

I wrote a story about a girl who lived in a forest where no one woud venture that deep into the wood to visit her. she was much the same as you described her. In fact I took that short story and made it into a play and entitled it, "The Prince in the Beggar Maid."

I agree with your concept 100% and I do think you should make it as real as possible.

Your story is truly wonderful. keep writing! You have a gift and if you would like, keep sharing exerpts...

I think later I'll share some art and poetry with the same theme and maybe it will inspire your own writing.

Love the discussion!

The Glass Slipper (1955)

She is closer to what my Cinderella is like.

She meets the prince in the forest and he tells her that he is a servant of the king! She even had a prophetic word for her destiny!

Thought I'd share this. I made it a long time ago when I still had access to a ceramics group. I just took a picture of it. In case you can't read it, it says, "With Jesus in my heart...I'm Superman." My daughter hung it up in the bathroom by the mirror above my sink.

WOOOOOW! I came on here tonight and there were four names appearing in the thread. That hasn't happened in a looooog time. :D

so I'm going to post some art and poetry along the lines of what we've been talking about.

The first poem and illustration portrays the girl as poor and entrapped in thorns. She is not a beautiful princess. The Prince comes to rescue her.

“Poor Soul that liest in the weary way.
Who shall hear thee pray?
Covered by thorns and wounded sore,
Who will hear thy voice implore?
What brave heart will dare pass,
Or touch with His foot the shivering grass?
O Soul weep and bleed!
Who will reach thee in thy need?
Thou waitest in hope for but One,
Will He come…will He come?”

The next illustration shows that the Prince realizes the granduer and majesty of royality may be too frightening for a poor maiden. So He puts on a beggar's cloak, becomes poor Himself to win her heart. He gives her a red rose. What does the rose symbolize to you?

Timid of soul she hides from what is glorious and grand
Then how can a Prince hope to win a paupers hand?
I’ll put on a robe of meekness and with humility dress My head
Forsake all My treasure to gain this pearl instead!

I just stayed up pretty late watching this version. I never heard of it before. I wonder why it's not better known? I really liked it! I think we all were like the rebellious Cinderella (and sometimes still are.) I know I was like her in many ways. I even was a dirty little ragamuffin tomboy type, the middle child with two sisters and often feeling unloved.

And the prince was just like Jesus...meeting her in the forest...so many parts of this movie reminded me of Him. I cried at a certain part but I won't give it away in case others haven't seen it.

Thanks KBT!

Hi all!

Just wanted to share that this Lent has been great for me in getting closer to Jesus.

the other night I realized I do long for the Lord more deeply than I think. I think about Him so often now and am so heartily waiting for Him to come again, or just to see His loveliness.

Also today during Adoration, I felt Him say to me, "This is my Heart covered in blood....keep it within your heart so it won't be exposed to the hurt it gets from the world" and moments after I imagined Jesus with His Heart in His wounded hands. So lovely...what a blessing.

God bless you all my family! Love you!

what a precious gift He gave you Jon. So many wound that heart. I hate to admit that I do too. I pray that He helps me to love Him more. His hands and heart...Jesu'!

A look of adoration...filled with love for Jesus!
