This is the first week I've watched (some on video after the show was over.)

A few stand out but there's no one I'm absolutely drawn to. In looking at their biographies I saw that most of them had never had any vocal training. They didn't even mention anything like church or school choirs.

More and more it seems like the judges are looking for a whole lotta "whoa, whoa, whoa's" with a little bit of rasp, and even their favorite female contestants are pretty much singing in the tenor range.

I really loved contestants with some real training and some real vocal chops--Sayesha several years ago, Melinda Doolittle....

They were perfecting their craft while still being able to deliver the requisite number of "whoa, whoa, whoa's" to please those who need some stumbling in between the lyrics...

My hubby likes Katie Stevens, but I wasn't that impressed with the song I heard.

LAst night must have been torturous. I turned on the tv in time just to see the recap of the night...did the producers choose to displays the worst parts of their singing or was the entire song that bad? In short, this was completely embarrassing. ugh...

As far as the girls, I was utterly shocked that they did not approve of

HAELEY VAUGHN!!!

What were they thinking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Her rendition of The BEatles "I Want to Hold Your Hand) was awesome! She is my fave.

Yeah, it was bad. Two nights in a row of sucky Idol. That's 4 hours minus commercials of sitting through poor perfomances. A few were ok, but I finally came to the conclusion as to why the show this week was depressing and frankly does not bode well for the rest of the season.

Don't mean to beat a dead horse over this, but I think it has to do with Paula not being there and Ellen who's turned out to be much more serious than expected. She's somewhat more positive than Simon but lacks the lighheartedness of Paula and her nurturing nature. I have nothing against Ellen; I think she does fine on her show. But this has not proven IMO to be a good fit for Idol. She has no industry or musical background. She's just there to give her uneducated opinion. That's no diss to Ellen, just fact.

Feel free to disagree and I know some of you will, but the lack of Paula's presence is making an impact on the mood of the show...it just doesn't feel right. I guess I'm looking forward to X factor now.

Last night was extremely boring and painful. I have to agree with Simon when he says this year is the year of the ladies. I think overall they did much better and have more stand outs.

Overall I'm finding that I'm liking Crystal Bowersox and Lilly Scott and of the men I like Lee DeWyze (didn't remember him from Hollywood week, but stood out last night) and Casey James. I originally really liked Andrew Garcia, but I thought he didn't do well last night.

The ones I thought were not good at all, and I'm thinkin' they will likely head home, if America had their ears open are Haeley Vaughn, Jermaine Sellers, both imo the absolute worst - and maybe also Lacey Brown and John Park.

I agree about Ellen. I think she is trying to prove something by being serious. It's quite embarrassing actually. The whole time I am sitting there thinking "you don't know anything, you have no professional opinion"...and it just ruins it for me. I get the feeling that there is something in the air when she is critiquing. Something just doesn't feel right btwn. the judges....minus Randy. Like there is tension or something?

Well, our intuition is correct.

EXCLUSIVE: Simon & Ellen Not Talking To Each Other | RadarOnline.com

So Ellen and Simon don't get along. Surprise, surprise!

“There’s two camps on the show this season,” said an Idol insider. “It’s a lot more tense than previous seasons. It seems as if Ellen has decided to try to take control since Simon is on his way out and that’s created problems.”

And...Winter Olympics outdraws season-low 'Idol' -- The Live Feed | THR

Olympic coverage beats out Idol for a 2nd time.

Also, Simon got engaged!

EXCLUSIVE: It's Official! Simon Cowell Engaged, His Fiancée Tells RadarOnline | RadarOnline.com

I follow Jackie Collins on Twitter and she's been a big fan of Idol. However, today she tweeted that she's about to give up because it's just so boring. She misses Paula too. It looks like the juggernaut that Idol was, could be replaced by X Factor when that starts in 2011.

Randy and Ryan need to get out while they still can after this season. Ellen's attempt at judging is making a mockery of the show. She appears to try too hard and I would think she is even practicing her lines. It's horrible to watch. It's like a train wreck.

I think this is the end of AI as we know it. Simon is making a good decision. Knowing what I do know of him, he probably feels Ellen's presence on the show (as a non professional) is making the show a HUGE joke.

Hey, never thought about the Ryan and Randy thing. Ryan especially needs to look for greener pastures. He's very talented and makes the show in some ways what it is.

As far as Ellen, yeah, she's a joke. I had to laugh last week when she said that someone was "pitchy"...like she really knows what that is. She is clearly repeating some of the terminology of the other judges. I just cringe over it. AI needs to do some fast thinking here on a replacement.

I dunno, I'm not a music professional, but I play an instrument and sing, and I can tell when someone is off-pitch. I can tell when they are sharp, or flat, or off tempo, or just... bad. I don't think you have to be a record producer or have an extensive background in music to know these things, you just have to have a halfway decent ear.

If I remember correctly, Ellen played an instrument too, and she's a music lover, so I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that she'd be able to tell if someone was off pitch.

That said, I can't stand her. I think she's over-exposed, I'm tired of seeing her everywhere, her humor has gotten old and repetitive and disingenuous to me, and I just don't like her very much. I watch her show because I think the games are fun and I like the guests, but she is constantly self-promoting, and that annoys me.

I think there's a learning curve with being on any new show, and that's probably why she is coming off as wooden and rehearsed.

I actually liked a couple of the guys last night, especially the first one. He's got a great sound. But I was surprised to read that he's personal trainer! I think he NEEDS one!

Ellen tried too hard to be funny on the "have you ever missed" question. Oh well. We'll all get through this season and then move on to X Factor. The thing that I'll like a lot more about the new show is that the younger age limit is like 14 and there is NO upper age limit. So we could end up with our own Susan Boyle. Yippee!

The judges need to quit calling these guys out for performing badly...is that a strategy to get them to WOW them? Its not gonna work, they end up contradicting themselves and confusing the contestants....

One is putting to much into the rendition and the other is not putting enough into the song ...one is to "vaudeville" and the next is to boring....

groan.....

Well I finally watched last night. I liked Crystal and Lilly, but what else would you expect from an old hippie :D.

As far as the new judges, I'd never seen Cara before, I definately think AI screwed up. Sure AI was getting old, but it had more to do with the types of contestants, not the judges, IMO. Cara has the knowledge, but no personality that I saw. Ellen has the personality, but didn't bring it. If they could morph those two together, they may have gotten a better replacement for Paula.

Personally, I like Kara better this year then previous year(s- how long she been doing ai?). Ellen... I know what you guys are saying, but I dont think she's so bad.

The contestants now, lol. I didnt like Casey's performance and Im glad Kara took him down a peg or two. He was right, there are a few more talented singers in there.

Tishri1, I think those are my two favourite guys and the first one, cant remember his name. Will watch some of the girls tonight (chuck missler's on tonight at the same time).

Tishri I also agree with you about how they need to stop critiquing these guys the way they do. I like Andrew... what's his name and I hadnt heard the song he sang last week before (sugar we're going down?... is that what it was called?) but I loved the way he sang it!

The kid with the Mullet is actually great, I think he'll go far in the competition. Or he should.

Those poor girls.....these Judges need to lay off the negative comments or get Paula back they are way outta ballance and are not offering any constructive critisizing that isnt totally confusing these folks!!!

Paula was always supportive and even with a negative comment she would bring it with love and support....these judges are harsh and their comments are not making them anything but confused....

thats said LOVED THE GIRLS!!!! I loved
