Does God Make Promises?

Genesis 22:16-18 (King James Version)
16And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
17That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore[/b]; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
18And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Any time God says He's going to do anything we can take it as a promise, because He doesn't lie. His word is His bond.

I don't think God makes promises. I think God IS, WAS, and ALWAYS WILL BE! I believe when HE speaks it was done and is done. I think it is a man-made word and it minimizes who GOD is. I think that it is a man-made term that is used to explain God's actions. I believe when GOD says it is not a will be not want to be. The problem is man's interpretation on what God says and converting it to where God is minimized to a mere promise instead of IAM.

Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law.

Interesting approach. We could tend to look on these promises a bit (or a lot) differently than God does. When a promise is made, we tend to look for a future fulfillment of that promise because we live under the umbrella of linear time, but God, being eternal and outside time, would most likely see a promise as something that has already been fulfilled.

Absolutely! That is what the covenant is all about. He will if we will. The promises that God makes are usually conditional on what we do. If you look through the bible where God made covenants and even with salvation it is He will if we will. To be saved we must believe in our hearts that Jesus is Lord and messiah and we must confess with our mouths, when we do this God fulfills His promise for that. All the other things we debate and argue about are the same way.

Yes, very interesting. We usually see a promise as something not yet done and the one who is making the promise we see as trying to bring whatever he promiseed to come to pass. Does God try to bring his "promises" to pass, or is what He promised already done and we are just catching up with that thing God has promised?

Yes.
However, it is not acceptable for a man to make a promise.
James 4:13-15 Come now, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.

Hmmm I like this. Maybe he is the promise. Or maybe we're looking at promise as something one tries to do, but it really is is an absolute?

Exactly!, If it's God who makes the promise it's already done. If man makes a promise with have to be suspect of it. But when God makes a promise we should know it's already done, we're just set in time and have to wait till it's time for that promise to come to pass. Whether it takes generations to come to pass or not, it will come to pass because it's already done!
