The thing is that locally speaking, the wealthiest Christians I know are not WOF pentecostal. The WOf pentecostal church I was a member of went bust in October and has to have an unpaid pastor to get along now.

The wealthiest Christian I know is a member of the brethern, a consultant psychiatrist with his own practice who earns 250K per year.

The WOF pentecostals are the most obsessive, but not the most prosperous. As well as financially, they have a range of other problems in aspects of their life.

My main problem with 'prosperity gospel' is that the people who are into it dont seem to be noticeably more prosperous than those believers who arent. I.e what does it do in practice. Apart from people at the top of the pyramid, prosperity teachings dont seem to do much......

Imagine that.

Same in our neck of the pineywoods, Lis. In fact, some of the wealthiest people I know are nonbelievers or, at least, non-churchgoers.

These days it seems the word “prosperity” has changed its meaning among the “Prosperity Message” crowd and as it has recently come to be used in the term “Prosperity” message, at least different than what it was when I used to subscribe to it about 20 years ago. It has apparently come to mean something other than what it used to mean back when godliness was considered a means of gain by money-obssessed Christians and by what the dictionary has always said it is—i.e, “a successful, flourishing, or thriving condition, esp. in financial respects; riches, wealth, opulence, exorbitance, luxury” (Dictionary.com). Now it just means having your needs met, not actually being prosperous (in the accepted usage of the term).

Fact is, I am far more prosperous (by the standard definition of the word) today, since I have abandoned the “prosperity” message entirely, than I ever was when I embraced it.

Go figure.

Either the Word works or it ain't the Word.

Just possibly a lot of nonbelievers are wealthier than a lot of Christians, because a lot of Christians reject prosperity.

What I find funny about the prosperity doctrine is that the adherents, for the most part, do not emphasize the passages in the Bible that will really make you money, such as hard work, savings, inventorying and many people skills.

There's a ton of great money making tips in the Bible and I have rarely heard any of the prosperity types talk about it. Instead they leave their listeners with the idea that money is going to fall from heaven.

Sigh. Just not true. In fact; in my experience stewardship principles are highlighted even more because WOF teaches that your money is not your own but God's money. WOF does, however, teach that while you should utilize stewardship principles, you should NOT rely on your skill in stewardship principles to take care of your monetary needs (or any need period). For one you should just plain trust in the Lord your God over everything and for two no matter how skilled you are at making money and investing money etc; things outside of your control can come in and rip it all away..............and if you were trusting in it then you're devastated.

I was a member of an AOG church that followed WOF doctrines from November 1999 to December 2007. While my experience will not be typcial of all WOF or AOG churches, it will be typical of at least some of them.

I know that church Lismore and I have heard some of the things you were taught at that church, and I would say that you seemed to have caught something that to me would not reflect Word of Faith Christianity.

I am always concerned about someone describing or judging any doctrinal belief (including the covenantal promises of prosperity) by either their own or others experiences that they have observed. I believe in prosperity because the Bible teaches us about it, and God has included it as part of His covenant, you know the one Im talking about right, the one sealed in the blood of His Son?

What one observes, feels, sees, tastes or hears outside of the revealed Word of God has no bearing on the validity or truth of the promises of God. Those who listen to their flesh will never walk above it. Mortification of the flesh is required to walk by faith.

What about those that have given their lives to Chirst and work everyday for God and yet have nothing but the Clothes on their back. It is them that I truely want to be like. For they have come to know the Lord as their strength and provider. Not the one that is in the masion on the hill. For I know that the Lord has told us to take up our cross and follow Him. And the road is going to be hard for us to make it through without Him.

While you post much in the way of using the words: rich, prosperious, wealthy, and/or examples of men who were wealthy you have yet to show where God promised Abraham that all of his decendents would be wealthy in this world.

Okay, I'm not saying this to be contentious, but did you actually think about what you wrote here? You have listed three things in this sentence that you aspire to:

1) give your life to Christ
2) work everyday for God
3) have nothing but the clothes on your back

I only fully agree with the first. Give your life to Christ. I think we should all do that.

But you need to show me some scripture about working everyday for God and having nothing but the clothes on your back.

I recall the story of Mary and Martha when Jesus came to visit. It said that Martha was cumbered about with much serving the disciples and Jesus, while her sister Mary sat at Jesus feet and heard His Word. When Martha complained to Jesus that He did not care that Mary did nothing to help her, Jesus said "Only one thing is needful, and Mary has chosen that good part".

Working is good, but believing is better. I aspire to follow those that through faith and patience inherit the promises, not aspire to those who wish to make a show of religious labours in order to justify to themselves their position in the kingdom.

As far as prosperity not being in the covenant, The Bible is our covenant. You know, those terms, Old and New Covenant? Prosperity, riches, wealth etc, occur hundreds of times in their differing forms within this covenant. The Bible definately teaches that prosperity is part of our covenant.

He did not say all would be.. only those who believed.
Those who find reasons not to beleive what God said... it will be unto them according to their faith (or lack thereof).

Now we get to heart of the problem of the Word of Faith movement. The if you believe it God will make it happen. Turning God into more of a vending machine than the soveirgn all-powerfull God that He is. No where in scripture do I see man telling God what to do. All through scripture I read see us doing to will of God to bring Him glory.

The ol vending machine again, eh? Original. So someone believes what God says and that means they think He's a vending machine? Makes perfect sense. And WOF doesn't tell God what to do, they believe what God told them He would do.
