• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

 do you know what a theraphy first-aid kit is ?

1. you get a box (fun to decorate) or a packback (convient pockets).

2. write down your crisis and friend phone numbers.

3. make a list of activities that soothe and distract you (like music).

4. have a special snack handy (important for your blood sugar to get level).

5. add stuffed animal, color pens, paper etc.,

6. journal books, and favorite pictures... etc.

7. bible scriptures and bible... (make book markers of fav scriptures).

this should be stuff you turn to first. xo dee

Drawing is helpful. Drawing out your pain on to paper - rather than drawing it out of your skin. Give it a try - get yourself some good paper and pens, markers, crayons - whatever. Paint, sketch, or draw your pain down.

I discovered this remedy too late ... wish I had found it before - then maybe I wouldn't be sitting here at 36 years old with scars all over my arms from an 18 year old's pain. :sigh:

That's a very good idea Winter...I tried this once it seems to help well.
Another thing that really helped was to to write all my feelings out on a paper...and believe that paper was unbelieveably crowded. It looked cool...but really it was everything I felt deep inside.

Drawing does help a lot. I tried that once...I wrote everyone of my feelings out on this paper...kind of like a collage...it looked really cool..but it was really everything I felt inside. Drawing the pain really helps...that way I am seeing the pain...but not inflicting pain on myself. So I'm feeling the pain...just in a different way

This sounds like a wonderful idea! Thanks for the tip! :)

I've been down and upset the last few days...and I have tried everything not to resort back to my old ways. It's so very hard...I'm afraid, because I know I'm falling deeper...and I don't want to end up where I was before.

You won't have to, sweetie, really.
I cut a lot at your age... stopped at about 22 and didn't do it again for about 20 years... and only started again due to being in circumstances which caused a lot of unresolved stuff to surface.
You are dealing will the 'stuff', you will get past it, and the desire to hurt yourself will fade, sweetie. I know it seems like forever when you are in the middle of it all, but it isn't. Just hold on, sweetie, and keep moving forward, one step at a time.

Have you tried other methods like holding ice cubes in your hands and rubbing ice on your arms? Or tried popping yourself with a rubberband. They hurt in a safer way. Or wrap yourself in a sheet and pray that you could feel God's presence more real than the sheet you wrap yourself in.

I've tried ice and rubberbands. It does not satisfy. The only thing that satisfies is if I actually fill the need that cutting is replacing. Sometimes though some needs can not be met. Then my only other option is to pray. It's hard to see right now that this won't last forever because there are always going to be needs that are not met.
