Aren't you and they jumping the gun a bit? Children are stressors on the marriage. Any cracks that are there will widen and you will have to work even more to fix them. The troubles that come with children's sickness and injuries can either weld you together or break you apart. I think the two should be even more one before they have to split their energies on children.

Not at all. Jumping the gun would be having children before discussing with your spouse your views on parenting...or even if you really want children or not. It would be much better to get topics such as discipline, extra curricular activities, home/public/private school, who stays home when the child is sick, saving for college or not, and so on, out in the open. To give these couples a chance to get their feelings out before they are in the middle of it and having to make a decision.

Home by Choice was really good, and Born Dancing (this one is out of print, but you can find used copies!) is turning out to be VERY good.

What exactly are they looking for?

Almost something like a premarital book, but for having kids. A book that has questions and topics that they will likely encounter being parents. To spank or not, to do private, home or public school, how much tv time is appropriate, and so on.

Husband Coached Childbirth by Robert A Bradley, MD, Marjie, Jay & James Hathaway, AAHCC

Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way by Susan McCutcheon, AAHCC

Or really anything else Bradley related you can lay your hands on.

Thanks for listing these. I hadn't thought about them discussing what type of birth they feel they should try to have.

There are 3 brilliant books that I think every couple with kids (or who plan on having kids) should get. If I had loads of money I would buy them for all my friends.

1. Loving our kids on purpose by Danny Silk
Amazon.com: Loving Our Kids On Purpose (9780768427394): Danny Silk: Books

2. Families where grace is in place by Jeff Van Vonderen
Amazon.com: Families Where Grace Is in Place (9781556612664): Jeff VanVonderen: Books

3. Grace based parenting by Tim Kimmel
Amazon.com: Grace-Based Parenting (0023755022370): Dr. Tim Kimmel: Books

All amazing books but I put them in order of preference.

Edited to add: These books cover a huge range of issues, from discipline and developing healthy relationships full of grace to bringing the principles of the Kingdom of God to our parenting strategy. You get a pretty good idea of what is covered by reading the Amazon reviews.

The Our Babies, Ourselves book seems like a great book. One that will bring up many discussion points. I'm always open to other ideas and ways of doing things and feel that my group would benefit from exploring not only the "American way" of raising children but those of may other cultures.

Thank you so much to all of you who have helped. This gives me a wonderful list to work from!!
