I grew up in an Independent Fundamental Baptist church. Now I go to a Southern Baptist church, but I really don't consider myself anything but a Christian. I still have the major doctrinal beliefs of a Baptist, but I don't think it matters what a church calls themselves as long as they have their doctrine lined up with the Bible. It reminds me a Paul getting onto a church for saying, "I am of so-and-so..."

I left the independents because I believe a lot of the things they teach as Biblical truths to be nothing more than preferences (women not wearing pants, KJV only, not going to the movies, etc.) If you disagree with them and choose to live according to your own convictions, they label you as "backsliden" or "worldly". No one can disagree with them and be "right with God."

Yes. That is precisely my experience as well.
